A SONG FROM THE HEART was originally composed for Trumpet andPiano and is dedicated to Dennis Caron on the occasion of his retirement. It was commissioned by his wife, Marsha Caron, and was premiered at Dennis’s retirement party by our mutual friend Charles Schlueter, long-time principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony. A SONG FROM THE HEART is filled with lyricism and rich harmonies, as the trumpet line sings and soars over a rich accompaniment.

Along with the movement In the King's Hall, The Homage March from Act III of Sigurd Jorsalfar remains one of the most popular Scandinavian pieces of classical music. This arrangement has, once again, has been skilfully crafted by Wil van der Beek for a younger Concert Band and will be a popular addition to any concert.

Sigurd Jorsalfar ist die Buhnenmusik zum gleichnamigen Drama des beruhmten norwegischen Dichters Bjornsterne Bjornson. Das Werk basiert auf einer altnordischen Sage von zwei Brudern, die beide um den Konigsthron kampfen und einer Frau, die den Streit schlichten soll. Wil van der Beek bearbeitete den feierlichen Huldigungsmarsch aus diesem Werk fur Blasorchester.

La Marche d'Hommage de l'acte III de la suite orchestrale Sigurd Jorsalfar d'Edvard Grieg, se trouve a l'oppose des marches au caractere sombre ou martial. L'introduction en forme de fanfare est superbement lyrique. Puis vient l'exposition d'un theme joue cantabile. L'instrumentation developpe quelque peu le theme initial avec des accents rythmiques a la basse. Le theme de la marche est ainsi amorce. Un trio central, lumineux et serein, precede le retour du theme de marche au tutti.

“Many ideas come to us in the middle of the wee hours, and especially after a good dinner and a good drink. The following day is a merciless sieve: only the best ideas survive. Writing 'Soliloque 2: La tornade' was one of those ideas that endured the light of the following day, after I had spent a good evening with my friend Jukka Harju, a master of french horn, in April 2012. He realized that needed a new, shortish solo piece for his concert on the Nordic Hornfest in Norway, and after a quick and imprudent thought, I said 'yes' when he wanted me to write it. Knowing that Jukka's bravura is his fantastic cantabile and more silent sounds, I wanted to introduce the other end of his virtuosity, that is, his ability to shape music constructed of quicker passages. After numerous get-togethers where we tried different views and angles, the piece was duly finished for the premiere in early August 2012. It might be signed by me, but it was definitely made better by Jukka's umpteen questions and proposals.” (Osmo Tapio Räihälä).

Mozart's Divertimento No 12 in E-flat K. 252 was written in 1776 for a wind quintet of 2 oboes, horn and two bassoons. In keeping with other Divertimenti, the style is light and casual. The movements are: 1. Andante cantabile, leggiero 2. Menuetto 3. Polonaise 4. Presto Stephen Gamble has done a brilliant job of arranging this work for brass quintet in the key of C. It is a joy to perform and to listen to. The music is about 12 minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced performers. Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in C (B-flat parts supplied also), Horn, Trombone and Tuba.
