Ton Koopman's new edition of all 16 organ concertos by Handel has drawn to a close. The quality of this edition has been highly praised from all quarters. Source-critical responsibility goes hand in hand with a high level of performance practice when Koopman provides interpretative tips for the ad libitum passages in the organ part without restricting the creativity of the interpreter who is interested in stylistic matters and prefers to work out his own solutions. I want to make an edition that is not a Koopman interpretation, but contains only that which Handel really wrote. Nevertheless, there are occasional performance suggestions in small print which are elucidated in the Critical Commentary. (Ton Koopman in Concerto) Koopman offers a basically unmarked text, thus leaving the performance details up to the performer. Especially note-worthy is the clear printing, extensive preface and detailed Critical Notes. (Katholische Kirchenmusik) Whoever wishes to hear the entire Koopman edition on CD can look forward to the new recording by Christian Schmitt and the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester (Brilliant Classics). This is the first recording for which all 16 new Koopman editions were used as the basis for the performance.

Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on 'Der Freischutz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as 'Preciosa', 'Oberon', and 'Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music; cantatas, odes and other occasional works; stage works; lieder and vocal works; orchestral works; chamber music; music for piano; piano reductions; miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations; works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references.

This piece, written in 3/4 time throughout, evokes visions of dancing figures, their faces unrecognizable in the shadows created from the play of light at dusk. Moving from D minor to E minor, the eerie keys and accidentals provide intriguing effects. Teachable moments abound for low first finger on A and E and some high third finger in the upper strings, augmented intervals and extended patterns in all instruments, as well as slurs and hooked bowings. This piece can be performed any time of the year, or as an autumn or Halloween feature.

Composed under pressure, edited in peace: K. 491In spring 1786 Mozart was under pressure: he had only two weeks between the composition and first performance of the C-minor Piano Concerto K. 491. It is no wonder that the autograph was written very hastily and the piano part occasionally only sketched. Mozart, who played the solo part at the premiere, still thought about it later. During subsequent revisions of the piano part, he caused a certain amount of confusion through corrected versions and parallel versions. Editor Ernst Herttrich thus faced great challenges when preparing the Breitkopf Urtext edition, especially since printed editions were only published posthumously. But since they contain readings that play an important role in the reception of the work, they were included in the new edition as variants.

Bacchanalia was commissioned by the Yokohama Bacchus Brass Orchestra to celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2019. The band wanted the title of this short opener to reflect the reference to Bacchus in their name, so Bacchanalia was agreed upon. The spirit of the Greek god of wine does indeed permeate the piece, with bustling themes, dance motifs and occasional harmonic ambiguity. A lovely piece of music full of joie de vivre.

Next to the Stabat Mater, the Petite Messe solennelle of 1863 is Rossini's second extensive sacred composition. Ostensibly, the work was an occasional piece, written for the dedication of a private chapel for the once well-to-do Parisian nobility. This explains the reduced instrumental accompaniment for two pianos and harmonium. Of course this instrumental garb, reminiscent of decent, elevated salon music, produces an unmistakable timbre which through its typical Rossini rhythm obtains an additional flair. The choral collection Gospels and Spirituals transports us into the fascinating world of African American folk songs. Around 30 gospels and spirituals have been arranged for mixed choir, unaccompanied or with piano. The choral parts sometimes divide, and occasionally solo parts (or even a small choral group) are required. As well as American classics (e.g. Amazing grace, Go down Moses, Kumbaya, Deep river, Down by the riverside, Good News, O when the saints, Nobody knows, Joshua fit the battle of Jericho), the collection also contains some discoveries from the beginnings of the genre. Just under half the arrangements were specially commissioned for the collection. Young composers from the USA (such as Courtney Carey, Marques Garrett) and arrangers from Canada, Denmark, and Germany (including Mark Sirett, John Hoybye, Thomas Gabriel, Carsten Gerlitz, Gunther Martin Gottsche, and Hans Ludemann) have contributed to this stylistically extremely varied choral collection. The medium difficulty level will enable many choirs to get to grips with the gospel style, something which perhaps few of them are very familiar with. Tips from the editors on performance, and a CD recording with a selection of the arrangements will help with learning the pieces. With their deep and emotional symbolism of captivity and repression on the one hand and redemption and freedom on the other hand, these Gospel settings are well-suited for many uses in concerts and church services. The arrangements with their catchy rhythms, groove, their blue notes and other elements from Jazz and Blues and the principles of call-and-response will move performers and audiences in equal measure. * arrangements of around 30 spirituals and gospels for four-part mixed choir * a cappella or with keyboard accompaniment * medium difficulty level * a good introduction for choirs with little previous experience of this repertoire * includes popular classics such as Amazing grace, Deep river, Go down Moses, Good News, Nobody knows, Joshua fit the battle of Jericho * wide variety of styles with many new arrangements * CD recordings helps with learning and rehearsing the pieces. Score available separately - see item CA.210400.

When Ludwig van Beethoven wrote the present two works around 1800, the Romance as a genre designation for a soulful, melodious instrumental piece was anything but established, despite the occasional piece bearing this title. Beethoven himself named the pieces Romance in the autographs, but offered them to Breitkopf & Hartel for publication as Solo. His brother Karl even spoke of 2 Adagios to the publisher. Nevertheless, Beethoven's two Romances for violin achieved lasting popularity ever since the publication of the first editions in 1803 and 1805.The present Urtext edition takes the autographs and first editions as its main sources. The piano reduction and the study score (,,Studien-Edition) are available at G. Henle Verlag.
