Bach's second cantata starting with the text Come now, God's chosen saviour (II) BWV 62 was first performed in 1724 on the 1st Advent Sunday (which, at that time, was the only Advent Sunday with church music in Leipzig) and belongs to the annual cycle of chorale cantatas. As was usual for chorale cantatas, the unknown librettist used the first and last verses of Martin Luther's hymn verbatim for the opening chorus and the concluding chorale but adapted the texts of the inner verses. After two contrasting arias - the one dance-like, the second almost heroic - an almost enraptured accompagnato (Wir ehren diese Herrlichtkeit, und nahen nun zu deiner Krippen), in which the soprano and contralto mostly sing in parallel thirds and sixths, leads to a simple concluding chorale. Richard Strauss was aware (especially following the success of his Don Juan) of his reputation and above all of his value as a composer, which led him to rewrite several of his successful works by hand and leave them to his descendants as valuable Christmas gifts. In the case of the Eulenspiegel score, however, it was a genuine revision, which he marked with the instruction: [...] with the second fair copy October 1944 | once again revised and | to be regarded as a new print (especially in the complete edition of my works). | Dr. Richard Strauss. Hundreds of more precisely defined indications for articulation, dynamics and tempo, but especially an altered scoring at the end of the work (waiver of additional horns and trumpets) present the Till Eulenspiegel in this Urtext edition for the first time in the version bequeathed by Strauss as the final version. The dedicatee of the work changed as well. Whereas the first edition was dedicated to the dear friend Dr. Arthur Seidl, Strauss dedicated his revision to the good Till on his 50th birthday.

With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. Bach's well-known church cantata Schwingt freudig euch empor BWV 36 (Up joyous raise your song), first heard in its final version on First Advent Sunday in 1731 at the Leipzig Nikolaikirche, can be traced back to a secular birthday cantata from 1725. The text is now revised to render the events of Advent - the rejoicing of the opening chorus, the loving veneration and the warm-hearted welcome of the three solo arias retained from the original cantata now all apply to the Messiah, who, as once in Jerusalem, should find a place in the hearts of the faithful. However, their unmistakeable Advent character derives from the fact that Bach contrasts the four festive settings from the secular cantata with three strophes from Luther's Advent chorale, Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, thus at the same time giving a voice to the Mystery of God made man.
