Passacaglia is a work for brass quintet that tackles a style of composition rarely explored in brass chamber music repertoire. An ostinato subject is provided initially by the trombone, creating a quasi-minimalist chant-like atmosphere, as other motifs gradually evolve and emerge before disappearing back into the homophonic texture. A central trumpet duet suggests a new direction, yet hints of the original theme never fully subside. Another duet provides even greater agitation, but again fails to materialize as the theme gradually fades into the distance.

Cicada larvae live underground for years, creeping about slowly and peacefully in the darkness until that sudden, beautiful brief moment when, one warm, damp summer’s eve, they emerge, metamorphosed into a highly mobile life form. Gaily they dance in the sunshine, singing ardently to the trees in all their greenery --- but only for a short while, for, just as suddenly, they are gone. The same process repeats year upon year. The life cycle of this string quartet resembles that of the cicada. Initially, two embryonic cells remain hidden within dense, gloomy note-clusters; over time they evolve into buds, grow and then blossom. They appear for the first time in their adult form in the fast middle section, where they assume the shape of two very popular Chinese folk melodies, Jasmine and Old Six Blows, albeit in wholly chromaticized and defamiliarized variants. After their grand efflorescence, these forms gradually dissolve into transparent wisps of sound.

Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him. Just like Bach's 6 suites for cello solo, these 6 arabesques are composed of a number of distinct movements which follow the suite principle. The melodies in these 6 arabesques are influenced by Mediterranean folk music.

The second and fourth movements are based on original dances which are typical for the modal nature of Greek music.

The song Bist du bei mir, geh’ ich mit Freuden zum Sterben und zu meiner Ruh’ (BWV 508) was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach for his second wife Anna Magdalena (1701-1760), who he married in 1721.The popularity of this song is probably due to the magnificent, sensitive melody that fits wonderfully with the text, in which a loved one is told that even death is beautiful “as long as you are there with me.†This beautiful arrangement by Jacob de Haan is suitable for use in any concert. The temples of Malta are the oldest stone buildings still standing on earth. They were built by a mysterious civilization which was very advanced for the time of 3,600 BC. Sometimes when we look at the ancient stones, it's fun to remember that children once played and danced in the temple courtyards. Surely those long-ago children made music, too. Composed by Marcel Dupre, Laudate is the last of the Four Motets. Written for a mixed SATB and two organs, the lyrics are in Latin and the volume includes all the scores: female soprano and alto, male tenor and bass and the two organ scores. The piece is introduced by the two organs and the male voices are the first to start singing (tenor, followed quickly by the bass). The full SATB then sings together, sometimes alternated by the organs and the organ parts include an outstanding toccata. Laudate is an amazing way to finish this series with a triumphant and glorious celebration of God. The organ scores require some upper intermediate skills, with the knowledge of pedals and the vocal parts, quite demanding, evolve in polyphony and polyrhythm. Marcel Dupre is a French composer and virtuoso organist who won the Prix de Rome in 1914. He became famous when he played the works of Bach in its totality from memory in 1920. He later became the professor of many renowned students at the Paris Conservatoire such as Olivier Messiaen, Jean Langlais and Pierre Cochereau amongst others.

Lahara - which literally means 'wave' - is a term used in Indian music to describe a repeating melodic phrase that accompanies table and pakhawaj solo. In such a traditional context the lahara would be played by a melodic instrument such as the sarangi, functioning as a background against which the flourishing virtuosity of the soloist could evolve. In my piece this function is also present in the form of a long line stated three times fully in the Thai gongs, however there is no virtuosic soloist. Instead, the musical evolution (if it is that) takes the form of a resonant ceremony enacted on bell plates and steel pans, situated not only on-stage but in four locations around the audience. If you want to look for it, the idea of waves can also be seen in other aspects of the piece: the slow wave of the gradual progression of players from the back of the hall to the front, which defines the form of the piece; the waves of tam-tam crescendi at the end of each statement of the lahara; maybe even in the way that the foreground melodic figurations progressively increase in density over the course of the piece until they completely dominate our perception, before suddenly disappearing… And on a more concrete note every sound is, after all, a wave. Pine’s interpretationis informed by thorough historical study, which has been polished byyears of performance insight, but also encourages those studying Bach’srepertoire to craft their own unique interpretation of these timelessmasterpieces. This edition closely follows Pine’s critically acclaimed 2016recording “Testament: Complete Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin byJ.S. Bach†(Avie 2360) making it an invaluable resource for any student, teacher, or performer enthralled with J.S. Bach’s long standing legacy.Ms. Pine holds the distinction of being the only American and youngestperson to win the gold medal at the J.S. Bach International ViolinCompetition in Leipzig, Germany, 1992.here is no one right way to play Bach. More thanalmost any repertoire, each individual’s interpretation isas unique as their personality. Though I have spent decadesstudying Bach’s music as well as that of his contemporariesand predecessors, my final rationale for artisticdecisions is often taste and instinct. Every violinist whoundertakes a lifetime’s journey with this incredible repertoireis continually discovering new ideas. Thus, theopinions on the following pages may evolve over time. However, everything in the sheet music closely follows my2016 recording “Testament: Complete Sonatas and Partitasfor Solo Violin by J.S. Bach†(Avie 2360), which I trulyfeel represents the culmination of my exploration intothese extraordinary works. In choosing to present this edition, my hope is thatyou will find useful solutions to challenges of fingering, bowing, and polyphony, and helpful information aboutphrasing. I have also included additional dynamic suggestionswith the hope that trying these ideas will help inspireyou to discover your own. All of these markings aredesigned to work with a baroque violin and baroque bow,a modern violin and baroque bow, or a modern violinand modern bow. While the information in this editionis unusually dense, there is much that I did not include, such as lifts, breaths, articulations, whether to play on oroff the string, metronome markings, details of timing, and emphases other than hemiolas.I offer this book to you in the spirit of Bach: “SoliDeo Gloria.â€.
