After the Passions-Cantate ,,Ein Lammlein geht und tragt die Schuld of 1775, the Christmas Oratorio is the second major vocal work by Homilius to appear in print during his lifetime. With an unusually large instrumental contingent, Homilius set the, at that time, much beloved pastoral theme of the shepherds in a most sophisticated manner. Each movement presents a clearly differentiated, atmospheric scene, distinct from all the other movements. This applies to the varied pastoral music, as well as to the representation of the mighty God by an angel, whose entrance is accompanied by trumpets and timpani. As with many cantatas by Homilius Kommt, frohe Volker, herzu, for the 4th Sunday after Epiphany, is notable for its unusual formal structure, with two choral movements in a cantata of only three movements. The oratorio Passions by Homilius were among the last compositions of their kind in the 18th century. In an oratorio Passion the chorus is restricted mainly to singing the chorales and the interjections of the crowd; only the conclusion of a Passion provides an opportunity for an extensive choral movement. In the St. John Passion the final chorus emphasizes the supreme importance of the Crucifixion as the climax of St. John's Gospel. The free elements of the composition take the forms customary at the time: da capo arias are predominant. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Lent and Passiontide. Single Part, Organ. HoWV I.2. 60 pages. Duration 95 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 37.104/49. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3710449). ISBN 9790007091347. Language: German. He was without argument our greatest church composer, wrote the lexicographer E. L. Gerber a few years after Homilius's death in 1785. As a result of the destruction of the Kreuzkirche during the Seven Years War, the longtime Kreuzkantor, a pupil of Bach, performed his professional musical duties primarily at the Frauenkirche in Dresden. The Passionskantate was well received and widely disseminated during the 18th and 19th centuries: Thanks to its popularity it was published in 1775 by Breitkopf as a full score - a rare honor, accorded to only one other Passion in the 18th century (Graun's Tod Jesu). The text describes the events of the Passion from a very personal point of view: The story focuses less on the actual events, then upon the feelings of the observers of these events. The subjective nature of the narrative is reflected in a very dramatically marked style of recitative, which presents a charming contrast to the expressive choral writing and the melodically accented arias. With the release of a new music editions and a SACD/CD the Passionskantate can now be rediscovered.. STB vocal soli, SATB choir, 2 oboes, 2 horns, 2 violins, viola, basso continuo SKU: CA.3722203 Cantata for the 4th Sunday after Epiphany. Composed by Gottfried August Homilius. Edited by Christoph Koop. Gottfried August Homilius - Selected Works. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Epiphany. Vocal score. HoWV II.40. 24 pages. Duration 12 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 37.222/03. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3722203). ISBN 9790007164706. Text language: German. As with many cantatas by Homilius Kommt, frohe Volker, herzu, for the 4th Sunday after Epiphany, is notable for its unusual formal structure, with two choral movements in a cantata of only three movements. The generally festive, thankful character of the work, without references to the Gospel for a particular Sunday, makes this cantata, characterized by its singable melodies, a work which can be used on many Sundays throughout the church year. Carus Verlag #CV 37.103/09. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3710309). ISBN 9790007214234. Language: German. Gottfried August Homilius - Selected Works. Passionskantate I Ein Lammlein Ga 4. Sacred vocal music, Cantatas, Lent and Passiontide. Individual part. HoWV I.2. 44 pages. Duration 95 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 37.104/14. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3710414). ISBN 9790007214326.
