This publication is a completely revised edition of our five-volume guitar tutor. In the decades since the first edition, the musical interests of our students and their practice possibilities have changed. To adapt to this, we have partly expanded and partly reduced the musical and technical material of the tutor. We have increased the number of recital pieces at all levels of difficulty, so that our students can spend longer on a varied repertoire at their respective level. We have first of all selected works from the Viennese classics for this purpose but have also enriched the repertoire of the tutor with numerous pieces from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. In volumes I and II of the tutor we have given Hungarian folk songs and children's songs a significant amount of space. In the course of revision, we have expanded the material of these two volumes with simple arrangements of folk songs, nursery rhymes and flower songs, and we have provided very easy, but valuable material for instrumental study in particular for children aged between 6 and 10. We have also expanded the chamber music material to be found at the end of the volumes, because we believe that playing music together is the best way to make instrumental study a lasting experience for our students. The parts are relatively simple, sothe works provide a musical experience almost immediately.

György Balassa and Kálmán Berkes Clarinet Tutor has stood the test of time over decades, and its first volume takes three aspects into account: diversity, continuous technical development, and characteristics that are unique to Hungarian music. The publication for novice players is rooted in its use of Hungarian folk songs, but it also contains some classical compositions, along with works by 20th century Hungarian composers. The two composers have also included pieces written for two clarinets to help prepare students for later practice with polyphonic music.

The composer wrote of his work as follows: In the music of Hungary, folk songs are manifestly of great importance, on the other hand our ancient airs and dances play a modest role. For this work I have been influenced by dances of the 17th century, written by unknown amateurs in a relatively simple style. Most of these dances were recorded between the 14th and 18th centuries under the usual form of tablature notation. My interest in this music was first captured in the 1940s. I was so fascinated that I decided to give these melodies new life. I fitted the little eight-bar dances together into ternary and rondo forms, and leaning on early Baroque harmony and counterpoint, Iattempted a reminiscence of that atmosphere of the provincial Hungarian Baroque.

In der ungarischen Musik sind natürlich die Volkslieder sehr wichtig, doch die alten Melodien und Tänze spielen in unserer Musik eine geringere Rolle. Für dieses Werk habe ich mich von Tänzen des 17. Jahrhunderts anregen lassen, die von unbekannten Dilettanten, also ziemlich einfach, geschrieben worden waren. Die meisten waren in der zwischen dem 14. und 18. Jahrhundert geläufigen Tabulaturschrift notiert. In den vierziger Jahren begann ich mich erstmals für diese Musik zu interessieren. Ich war davon so fasziniert, dass ich mich entschloss, sie wieder zum Leben zu erwecken. Ich fügte die kleinen achttaktigen Tänze zu dreiteiligen undRondoformen zusammen. Ausgehend von der frühbarocken Harmonik und Kontrapunktik habe ich mich in einer Art ungarischen provinziellen Barocks versucht.“.

Dániel Dobos (* 1994) studied with Gyula Fekete and Máté Bella at the Department of Composition of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. In his violin concerto Sylvanus, he uses the technical repertoire of Transylvanian folk violinists. His piano piece, Drumul dracului, which won the first prize in 2018 at the Béla Bartók World Competition, also focuses on a new interpretation of Transylvanian folk music roots. In Callis stellarum, Dobos set one of the apocalyptic visions by the prophet Isaiah: “For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.” At the end of the composition, the Hungarian folk song “Csillagok, csillagok” (Stars and Stars) is heard as a kind of hopeful association. Commissioned by the municipality of Debrecen, this piece won the first prize in the youth mixed choir category of the HangKELTO Youth Composition Competition held in 2021.
