New York is the city which fascinates and inspires Ruders. Time and again he goes back there to work. 'Manhattan Abstraction' (1982) subtitles - a symphonic skyline for large orchestra - was conceived there. Ruders' Brittish colleague Oliver Knussen defines the piece as: - a performance of an extraordinary Morden-Times-like construction. It is a sort of symphonic sculpture, which in the composer's own words words propels forth from one particular inspiration: the New York profile, as seen from Liberty Island, one icy cold January day with it's open, clear sky and dazzling sun light. 'Manhatten Abstraction' appears as an amalgam of some of the compositorical habits found in present pieces. For instance, are present here compositorical ideas and melodic loans from 'Capriccio Pian'e Forte', 2nd String Quartet(1979), 'Four Compositions' (1980), and 2nd Piano Sonata(1982). The question at hand is mainly concerned with the enhanced elaboration of Ruders' use of the classic English change-ringing system: a permuting method pre-determining the order of tone-appearances and /or tone groups; a serial technique in other words. In spite of the rigidly fixed material, Ruders somehow manages to chisel out a personal expression by way of emphasising contrasting elements already existing within the material itself. The spiky, repetitive sections form a counterpart to a more human violin-solo. This dialectical tension is - as hinted by the title - a symphonic abstraction of a fascinating metropolis; the most beautiful and the ugliest. The subtitle: a symphonic skyline reflects the musical erection of the Manhattan profile, which under the clear sky, materializes into the most powerful and compelling man-made sculpture on earth. Thus 'Manhattan Abstraction' is a homage to, as well as a vision of, this giant contraption of concrete, glass, and chrome.

Intersections by noted Canadian composer, Bob Buckley is an interplay between the different sections of the band. The opening melody starts off with the alto, tenor, flugel, and trumpet and then develops into a ‘call and response between the reeds and brass. The next section opens with a line played by the bari, bass bone, guitar, and bass, contrasted with horn stabs, leading into the first solo sections. Later a cannon between the upper and lower voices leads to an ensemble section, another solo section and a blazing finish. A fun chart where all sections have a chance to shine!

The story centres on the English princess Caroline Mathilde (1751-1775), sister of George III, who at the age of 15 was sent to Denmark to marry the 17-year-old eccentric and schizophrenic Danish King, Christian VII. The ballet portrays her unhappy marriage, the King's growing madness and her fatal love-affair with Struensee, the King's influential physician, which leads to their arrest, his execution and her exile, at the age of 20, separated from her two young children. This suite begins with the act's opening number: a boisterous, stamping dance to which the people rudely mock Queen Caroline Mathilde and her lover Struensee. After this comes a dark Adagio, The Conspiracy, in which the theme passes like persuasion from mouth to mouth, its variations suggesting the different attitudes of the conspirators, firmly controlled by the brass-driven gestures of the Queen Dowager. The conspiracy then works itself out at a court masked ball, from which the suite includes two dances: a gavotte, and a slow, lubricious passacaglia that is a pas de deux for Caroline Mathilde and Struensee. The Arrest comes with a gathering rush of music that envelops the King, the Queen and Struensee, leading to a vociferous climax in which they are held apart. In The Execution, slow white music for wordless female voices, harp and low strings is interrupted by pathetic, alienated outbursts from the King. The suite ends, as does the ballet, with a quiet adagio lament for clarinets and alto flute as the Queen goes into exile. Score. Duration c. 33mins.

The quartet begins with a 5-note motif, played in unison that permeates melodically and harmonically throughout the movement. The energetic and hard-driven character of the second musical idea propels the music forward with fast moving notes and greater urgency. It often alternates with the more lyrical rendition of the 5-note motif, yielding contrasting sections. After a brief coda, the 5-note motif concludes the movement much the same way it had begun but with greater intensity. The second movement explores the world of fantasy. To some extent the beginning and the ending of the movement function as the opening and closing doors that separate the reality from the dream and subconscious. It is one continuous movement in an arch form that gradually accelerates to an expansive emotional climax and returning steadily to the surface led by an ethereal solo cello. The transcendent ending is similar to the beginning, though half step higher. The third movement begins boldly with the 5-note motif transformed into a dance character in a compound meter. The asymmetrical meter of the Persian folk music influences much of the rhythmic character of the movement. The return of many materials from earlier movements interwoven into the fabric of this movement reinforces the cyclical and organic character of the quarter. Particularly, a mysterious passage, reminiscence of the second movement leading to a brief full-blown ballad is a favorite moment of Ranjbaran's in the quartet. A blazingly virtuosic viola leads the quartet to an uplifting conclusion.

This action packed piece has a definite cinematic quality to it, and a title to match! Popular composer Sean O'Loughlin brings a wealth of musical sophistication to this contest/festival choice.Phantom’s Escape draws its title from a ski run at Mammoth mountain near Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Mountains. While skiing there, the name inspired me to create some original music with its roots in modern film scoring. The composition is in a traditional ABA form with contrasting sections. The music is both aggressive and passionate and provides some great teaching elements for the more mature string orchestra. At the beginning of the piece, the pulsing in the low voices sets the stage for the drama to come. I have always loved the pairing of eighth-note triplets and standard eighth notes in the same line. This is evident in the melodic element in the section starting at m. 7. Be sure not to rush the triplets here. A dramatic pulsing figure takes over at m. 21, then begins to deconstruct at m. 25.A mechanical-like rhythmic figure ensues at m. 31 to provide the accompaniment to the main melody in augmentation in the celli. The violas add some imitation to this at m. 39 that leads us to a more lyrical passage at m. 46. This lyricism continues to evolve at m. 51 with a multitude of inner counterpoint lines. The music pulls back at m. 59 to set up the big build-up into m. 73. The combination of eighth notes, eighth-note triplets and sixteenth notes creates some exciting textures leading into the passionate section at m. 73. The opening section returns at m. 86. This builds into the unison gesture at m. 120 to bring the music to a dramatic conclusion.

Imstrumentation: Solo Horn & Wind Ensemble Duration: Composed: 2004 Published by: Dunsinane Music Composer's Note: Great Scott! was commissioned by Mary Ann Craig, Director of Bands at Montclair State University for the MSU Wind Ensemble, and is dedicated to Mr. Jeffrey Scott. A work in one movement, Great Scott! may be heard as a stream of consciousness in the mind of the soloist. The work opens with the soloist quietly reflecting. The remnants of a dance tune are heard in the lower brass, as if from a radio, and the soloist unselfconsciously incorporates this material into his musings. He is joined by the ensemble, which reiterates and makes emphatic the soloist’s reflections. A variation of the dance tune, now integrated with the soloist’s ideas, is heard in the saxophones, soon joined by the French horn, gradually leading to a quieter section that again incorporates and expands the gathering musical materials. This leads to the central, lyric section of the piece—where the soloist returns to his initial musings, now amplified by the ensemble. This time, the dance music is not heard separately—in essence, it has been re-constructed by the soloist with contributions from the ensemble. A fanfare-like section follows, featuring brass and timpani. After a brief pause, the opening material is heard a final time, now with an active, rapid surface, as the piece rushes to a close.

One Cool Cat! features a playful melody sauntering along a beguiling chord progression in this enjoyable chart by Rob Vuono, Jr. The intro leads way to the cool sounds of trumpet and alto sax on melody, with tenor saxes and trombones later joining in on a counter melody. Much dialog and interplay between sections of the band is featured, and the piano gets to shine with oh-so-hip fills that are sure to bring a smile (all piano fills are fully notated with chord changes to ensure success). A solo section follows (any instrument may be featured here; suggested solos are provided), with swinging backgrounds adding some punch here and there. An impressive ensemble ensues after the solo section, leading to a brilliant shout chorus before alighting on the most purr-fect coda with grace and aplomb. One cool chart you just can’t miss!

In each of the four movements of this major work for concert band, the composer has tried to capture in music something of the spirit of this beautiful Swiss town of Rheinfelden, which lies on the banks of the Rhein. The opening movement, Promenade, sees woodwind and brass alternating short melodic fragments leading to a noble melody from the horns. The dreamy Ballad features a saxophone solo and chorale-like melody. This leads, via a four bar Interlude, to the Scherzo which takes the form of a moto perpetuo.

This uplifting march begins with the clarinets presenting the melody over a single snare drum accompaniment. The textures increase as the melody is developed, leading to a heavier minor section featuring strong lines by the low brass and woodwinds. A modified roll-off by the percussion section leads to a seamless modulation and the final presentation of the melody. A dynamic augmentation of the melody brings the march to a stirring conclusion.

Christmas is a time for gratitude, a time for celebration and expectation! And it is a time for music! Songs of the season are everywhere around us, reminding us of the birth of the Savior, the anticipated coming of the Christ Child, the advent of the Messiah, and the JOY that is ours as believers. As followers of Christ, we have done more than just anticipate His coming; we have lived the reality of having received the Son of God into our hearts, of knowing Him as Savior, and worshipping Him as the King of kings and Lord of lords! And because of the wonderful gift of God’s Son, given to us, we not only hear the music of Christmas, we SING the song of Christmas, the Song of Joy! Songs both new and old, celebratory and worshipful, joy-filled and awe-inspired, soul-searching and soul-soothing, weave a tapestry of Christmas wonder that invites the believer to worship and rejoice in His presence, while offering Hope to the downtrodden and Salvation to the lost. In perhaps some of its most powerful moments, Song of Joy ushers the listener into the serene and peaceful strains of the beloved carol Silent Night! Holy Night!, followed by compelling narration leading to the poignant and reflective new song, Somewhere in Your Silent Night (made popular by Casting Crowns). That is followed by a song of invitation and worship with Crowder’s Come As You Are, encouraging the lost to come to Christ and give Him their heart. This song of invitation leads us into the declaration that He is the King of kings who will reign forever in the medley featuring Tomlin’s, He Shall Reign Forevermore, and Elevation Worship’s, Only King Forever.

This energetic overture opens strongly with the low brass presenting a melodic arpeggio motive that recurs throughout the A section of the piece. The B section provides an excellent contrast with an expressive presentation by the woodwinds leading to a sensitive chorale setting. With shifting minor and major modes, the section builds with the brass before ending in a tranquil manner. A repeat of the opening section leads to a dynamic coda, bringing the piece to an exciting conclusion. This is well written educational material that plays at the more technical end of this grade level. -The Instrumentalist.
