The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notesform the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction. Asteroids and Shooting Stars beschrijft objecten in de ruimte.

This action packed piece has a definite cinematic quality to it, and a title to match! Popular composer Sean O'Loughlin brings a wealth of musical sophistication to this contest/festival choice.Phantom’s Escape draws its title from a ski run at Mammoth mountain near Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Mountains. While skiing there, the name inspired me to create some original music with its roots in modern film scoring. The composition is in a traditional ABA form with contrasting sections. The music is both aggressive and passionate and provides some great teaching elements for the more mature string orchestra. At the beginning of the piece, the pulsing in the low voices sets the stage for the drama to come. I have always loved the pairing of eighth-note triplets and standard eighth notes in the same line. This is evident in the melodic element in the section starting at m. 7. Be sure not to rush the triplets here. A dramatic pulsing figure takes over at m. 21, then begins to deconstruct at m. 25.A mechanical-like rhythmic figure ensues at m. 31 to provide the accompaniment to the main melody in augmentation in the celli. The violas add some imitation to this at m. 39 that leads us to a more lyrical passage at m. 46. This lyricism continues to evolve at m. 51 with a multitude of inner counterpoint lines. The music pulls back at m. 59 to set up the big build-up into m. 73. The combination of eighth notes, eighth-note triplets and sixteenth notes creates some exciting textures leading into the passionate section at m. 73. The opening section returns at m. 86. This builds into the unison gesture at m. 120 to bring the music to a dramatic conclusion.

Glorioso was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the ‘Siena Wind Orchestra’. The work opens after a short aleatoric intro, with an energetic and brassy ‘one tone fanfare’. The note F acts as an omnipresent note, and is also used as a bridge into the second, rather static movement. A noble sounding theme leads to an impressive climax, shortly followed by the spectacular and virtuoso finale, which is built on the musical elements that have been heard before. Stylistically, this sparkling finale is clearly influenced by Dmitri Shostakovich, hence the use of the famous signature used by the Russian Master: C D E flat B (or C flat). A glorious finish to a special workthat highlights various facets of the modern concert band.

New Hampshire is part of the greater region of New England in the north-east of the United States. The introduction to this work is inspired on the nickname of New Hampshire, ‘The Granite State’, which refers to the extensive granite formations and stone quarries. We further explore this beautiful state through Market Square in Portsmouth, the nature park Franconia Notch, and the Kancamagus Highway. The work closes in a grand manner, with a bow to one of the most beautiful of all American states.New Hampshire maakt deel uit van de grotere regio New England in het noordoosten van de Verenigde Staten. De inleiding van deze compositie is ge nspireerd op de bijnaam van New Hampshire, The Granite State, die verwijst naar omvangrijke granieten formaties en steengroeven. This is a sweeping new original composition in a subto Scottish style from popular composer Alan Lee Silva. Just another one of the pieces that always seem to flow effortlessly from his talented pen. This is an excellent piece for any contest or festival. This Scottish-flavored, uptempo piece in has a lilting, jubilant-feel throughout. Highland Celebration is built around two rhythmic subdivisions: two groups of three eighth notes per measure and three groups of two eighth notes per measure. Have the ensemble distinguish between the two subdivisions by tapping each one separately. Make an exercise of the rhythm in mm. 1–2 in Violin 1 to facilitate playing the different rhythms precisely: (1 2 3 - 4 5 6) and (1 2 - 3 4 - 5 6). Rehearsing four- to eightmeasure sections under tempo will aid in tightening these rhythms and solidifying pitch. The sections to concentrate on are: mm. 17–24 and mm. 33–40 to make sure that Violins I and II and Cello are playing together; mm. 33–40, to focus on the Violin 1 and Violin 2 unisons and couplings; and mm. 57–62, where the quarter-note subdivisions are emphasized. The piece is book-ended with the introduction material which always begins quietly and builds. The ensemble at m. 79 starts with tutti scalar figures and increases in intensity to the final accented measures at m. 83. Written in AABA form with a double bridge at m. 45, the overall feeling is dance-like and festive.

The Atlas Symphony for symphonic wind band is an impressive and subtle work, thematically complex, with a rich orchestration, but also great beauty. The composer was keen to draw a parallel between an atlas, where all the geographical maps of the world are collected in one book, and his score, which brings together all the facets of his musical style. Despite being written without any breaks, the symphony is structured around three main ideas. It is based upon a series of notes that will become the very essence of the piece, its building blocks. Like the works of composers of serial music, the series appears in different forms - melodic and harmonic, thematic or simply asan accompaniment. With its wealth of rhythms and contrapuntal power, this piece is a compelling concerto for orchestra. The Orchestre de la Police Nationale was the first to be attracted to this work and premiered it with excellence under the baton of composer Thierry Deleruyelle.
