Vern Sielert has created a marvelous arrangement of Michel LeGrand's extremely popular melody. As recorded by the North Texas Two O'Clock Lab Band, it is set in a modern ECM swing feel. Rich DeRosa, Professor of Jazz Composition at the University of North Texas, has written an exquisite ballad in dedication to Neil Slater (UNT Jazz Studies chair and director of One O'Clock Lab Band, retired). Originally recorded by the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band on their album Lab 2015, 'Neil' features the piano with a lot of room to improvise, combined with gorgeous, lush, legato ensemble passages. Quite playable by most bands, this chart has very limited brass ranges (highest note for trumpet is a written G) and will be a fantastic addition to any concert program! This 'edited' version is exactly like the 'pro' version except it only requires 8-brass. 5-4-4-3.

As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, 'Heidi' is the 3rd movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite. A gorgeous solo feature for alto saxophone throughout, this piece builds from a quiet beginning to a very powerful point (a 'Bolero' type of tension as the piece develops) before it diminishes to a quiet ending. This 'edited' version is in a lower key, has a shorter solo section and simpler brass ranges, making it more playable for both the soloist and the ensemble while still maintaining the integrity of Oliver's beautiful ballad. 5-4-4-3.

As recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra (and included in the Mosaic CDs The Complete Roulette Recordings of the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra), this is one of those charts that escaped notice for many, many years. Don Sebesky, one of the world's premier arrangers, took a magnificant Rolf Ericson tune and created an arrangement unlike anything you've heard before. The melody is stated by alto saxophone and trumpet, weaving in and out of various textures created by muted brass. The waltz feel begins to accelerate and rise at a climactic point where the melody is once again taken over by a solo trumpet and alto saxophone. Surprisingly, brass ranges are moderate. If you wish to program a piece which will have a very unique flavor and great audience appeal, this would be the chart! 5-4-4-3 (opt. original instrumentation available as 4-4-2-3).

As recorded on Libertango ! Hommage to Astor Piazzolla by the HR Big Band (Germany), this arrangement will surely lift your audiences out of their seats. It features a main soloist of your choice (originally recorded with bandoneon solo) and another solo for tenor saxophone. Various parts are included for different soloists to use. This marvelous arrangement opens with warm sounds in clarinets, muted trombones and flugelhorns behind the beautiful melody stated by the primary soloist. The setting is a medium tango, with a short, exciting swing section near the end of the chart. Once the piece moves into a strong, rock-fusion feel, there is no turning back.
