MONUMENTS was commissioned by the Resonate project, a collaboration of the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings, Bowling Green State University, the Carr Center, Michigan State University, Oberlin College Conservatory, the University of Michigan, and Western Michigan University. The trombone part was written for David Jackson, professor of trombone at the University of Michigan. The title occurred to me when a friend living in Philadelphia told me she had toured monuments in that city on Memorial Day, 2021. By that time I had already written what I call a “noble, lyrical melody†for trombone to serve as the main theme in the composition.MONUMENTS was finished on September 11, 2021. Other awesome monuments had been created on that date twenty years before.–Adolphus Hailstork.

David Fetter's brilliant new work Situation Update - Suite for Tenor Trombone and Piano is written in three contrasting movements totalling almost 11 minutes in length:1. Swift 2. Longing3. Exit MusicSwift is marked Intense and is very rhythmic and angular. Longing is a beautiful lyrical movement marked Cantabile and Exit Music is marked Lively mixing chromatic, lyrical and syncopated segments, ending in a giant climax. Both the solo and accompaniment parts are written for advanced performers. The work's premier was performed in 2015 by retired Principal Trombonist of the Boston Symphony, Ronald Barron and accompanied at the Piano by Pianist Larry Wallach. Here is what Mr. Ewazen has said about Situation Update:I had the pleasure of hearing Ron Barron play David Fetter's exciting and virtuosic new work for Trombone and Piano, Situation Updateâ€Â. David's music allows the Trombonist to sing and soar in 3 contrasting movements filled with vivid colors, beautiful and expressive harmonies, and a wonderful flowing rhythmic energy. The outer movements crackle withenergy, showcasing the amazing technique of soloist Ron Barron, as the melodic line shifts and changes with playful abandon, while the middle movement is heartfelt and lyrical, with beautiful melodic lines, supported by resonant, gorgeous harmonies. The work is a real tour de force andrightly deserves to take its place as a significant addition to the Trombone repertoire..

Haydn composed over 100 compositions, each in three movements, for his wealthy employer Nicolas Esterhazy, who played the six-string instrument called a Baryton, which in shape looked much like our modern day cello, but, of course, with six rather the cello four strings. His original scores were composed of three lines: the solo part, an inner filler part for viola and a bass part. I have realized the piano part. These transcriptions were created to give the solo trombonist an experience with classical music. The music is in an elegant style and a joy to perform as arranged by Mr. Trevarthen. The six works included in the collection are as follows:No. 2 in G (Theme and Variations)No. 26 in FNo. 49 in FNo. 55 in FNo. 77 in FNo. 95 in B-flatThe works are between 6 and 9 minutes in length each and suitable for moderately advanced performers.

I remember well when I began to write these pieces: I sat down at the piano in the conservatory, which was almost completely empty at the time... and I improvised the first chords of the first piece. After that I wrote the theme. The music rang loudly in that large auditorium and I could hear how it echoed about the empty corridors of the conservatory... it reminded me of the overture from Charles Gounod's Faust, as my hands still played out the melodies, stretching the limits of the theme which would become, in a sense, the introduction to the whole cycle. I could feel that the story was emerging: a story born from within the music. - Anton GLADKIKH ; Hoffmanniada is a collection of six short pieces for trombone and piano composed in a style inspired by the great Russian composers of the twentieth century. Sometimes melancholic and romantic, sometimes cheerful and virtuoso, the writing subtlety of Anton Gladkikh perfectly exploits the qualities of power and finesse of both instruments. Fabrice MILLISCHERThis original piece is the first opus of FLEX Editions collection directed by Fabrice MILLISCHER. This Johann Friedrich Fasch piece, originally composed for bassoon, has been performed by instrumentalists other than bassoonists for decades. This edition for tenor trombone requires a skilled trombonist (grade 6) who possesses great dexterity with the slide. The tessitura has been carefully altered so that it falls within a range that is more suitable for the tenor trombone, eliminating notes that were below the staff. Trombonist Gerald Felker has carefully edited this piece so as to not compromise the musical integrity. Total duration 15:45.

Vocalise-etude (en forme de Habanera) was originally written for voice and is one more example of a French composer's fascination with the music of Spain. Ravel in particular was fond of this Habanera style, having included it in several of his works. This music also may have been composed as a study for students at the Paris Conservatory.Ravel includes virtuosic runs and portamento effects which Mr. Sauer has effectively used in his fine arrangement for Tenor Trombone. The work of about 3 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

Trombone & Piano Duration: 17' Composed: 2013 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC …the audience loved Red Dragonfly. Definitely a keeper in my repertoire! Dr. James Bicigo, Associate Professor of Trombone, University of Alaska, Anchorage Virtuoso piece, the dramatic first movement opens with a Bold statement followed by the beautiful love theme. It reaches up to the Cry of the Heart, then everything ruptures and crashes. Now the trombonist must rebuild and gain strength through dramatic cadenzas until reaching the recapitulation where the opening Bold melody is transformed into a majestic march in 3/4 time. The love theme returns, and the movement ends in triumph. The second movement is a setting of the famous Japanese folksong, Red Dragonfly. The trombonist and pianist play the lovely song amidst the sound of fluttering wings that appear and disappear like memories of the heart. Thank you to the Nihon Gakugeki Kyoukai Foundation for permission to use the melody in this trombone sonata. A solo glissando opens the third movement in American folk dance style with tongue in cheek and twinkle in both eyes. The subsequent variations include a perfect triple canon, a taste of New Orleans jazz, and a dramatic augmentation which spills into a flashback of the first movement’s love theme. This melts away and we recapture a glimpse of the Red Dragonfly melody, this time growing to the Triumphant restatement of the first movement’s main theme. And finally, the exuberant coda drives to a spectacular ending. Difficulty Level: Trombone 6 (Professional) Piano 5 (Advanced) See also Red Dragonfly, Concerto for Trombone and Band for the version with band accompaniment. See composer website for audio sample.

Sibelius wrote the five-minute Romance in 1903 for string orchestra, originally titling it Andante. However he was persuaded to change the name about five years later by a critic's review. In 1903, Sibelius was still composing in a Romantic style, not the austere sounds heard later-on after he composed the 4th Symphony. Romance is made up of three sections; a slow Andante, a faster middle section and a slow third section. Mr. Sauer has distilled the music down to a lovely solo for Trombone and Piano. This crowd-pleaser will work well for advanced performers.
