Viktor Ullmann composed his choral arrangements of Hebrew, Yiddish and Chassidic songs in the ghetto of Theresienstadt in 1943/1944. In the function of 'Head of the Studio for New Music', Ullmann made a significant contribution to the so-called 'leisure activities' in the ghetto. The works were evidently intended for the repertoire of the various choirs at Theresienstadt, including children's choirs such as the Karel Vrbas Youth Choir in which Ullmann's son Max also sang. There is no evidence to confirm that Ullmann's choral works were actually performed in Theresienstadt, for example in one of the frequent concerts given by Rafael Schachter's choir of up to a hundred voices (cf. Milan Kuna, Musik an der Grenze des Lebens, 21998. p.313). The German translations below first appeared in the song book Makkabi-Liederbuch published in Berlin in 1930 (2nd edition 1935) which was available to Viktor Ullmann as a source for the melodies and text orthography for his choral arrangements in Theresienstadt.

The choral score of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's oratorioElijahis based on the scholarly-critical edition edited by Mendelssohn specialist Douglass Seaton. In its 1847 version, this musical setting of the story of the Biblical prophet from the 1st Book of Kings has remained popular to the present day. The choral score is fully compatible with the existing performance material. It does not however contain the appendices found in the full score and vocal score (with numbers from the first version).

It is against this backdrop that we ever had a chance to know of Elijah McClain. Here in quarantine I sometimes practice my scales in front of the news. And one day the mirror image looking back at me from the screen was a slight young man, warm, affable brown eyes, and also a violin under his chin. The newsreel-style camera pan so familiar now, I knew the only reason we were gazing upon his unfamous face was that he too had been killed by police nearly a year before. But the revelation of it in the broadcast hit me particularly hard.Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, who is not only one of the great composers of our time, is also a dear friend, and called me the next day, also deeply saddened by the news. It was from Ellen that I learned that Elijah used to play for the kittens at the local animal shelter so they wouldn’t be lonely. This kind, gentle soul was aggressively taken into police custody while saying, “I am an introvert. Please respect the boundaries that I am speaking... I’m going home.†He was never seen alive again.Ellen and I spoke of the sadness and the injustice of this several times. She felt a powerful calling to contribute something in a statement and the result is the piece you now hold in your hands. This Accessible Edition of Mendelssohn's classic oratorio, Elijah, has been modestly adapted by Hal Hopson for the purpose of making this esteemed work less of a monumental challenge and vastly more approachable for a wide range of choral groups. Several considerations were made in the editing and adapting of the score starting with every effort to maintain the musical integrity of the original. Modifications include: reducing the overall length of the work while maintaining the dramatic flow, lower keys for solos and choruses, updates to the text, making the organ accompaniment more user friendly with designated manual and pedal parts, providing an optional timpani part derived from Mendelssohn's original orchestration, and providing scriptural references for the entire text.
