One can truly say that Mendelssohn's St. Paul oratorio is a genuine work in progress - such as one finds repeatedly in the composer's works. After the world premiere in Dusseldorf in 1836, the composer sighed: Since I changed a number of things after the performance, notably in the recitatives, and omitted a few pieces entirely, I really don't know how these changes can be made in the quartet parts that have already been engraved.Luckily, the score had not yet been printed at this point in time. It was published not long afterwards (1837) and served as the basis for the old Complete Edition, where, however, it was mixed together with other sources.Michael Marker's present Urtext edition uses the first edition of the score as the main source for the first time. Its inconsistencies were emended by the editor in agreement with other contemporary sources.By forgoing the version transmitted by Julius Rietz (1878), on which all later reprintings were based, in favor of the score of the first edition of 1835, which was personally supervised by the composer, a new Paulus has come to light: freed from a number of conventionalizing, adulterating retouchings, at times more angular in detail and thus more characteristic. In The Essence of Youth the composer gives an insight into childhood and youth — inspired by his own daughter. The opening of sparking rhythms, dynamic contrasts and changes of time signature paint a vivid picture of the unpredictability of children. The first and second movements recount the love — and also tension and the worries — in the adult-child bond, through dissonant harmonies but also pretty melodies. The fugue-like ending leads to a final splendid chorale: a picture of proud parents with their child!

In The Essence of Youth geeft de componist zijn visie op de kindertijd en de jeugd. Zijn eigen dochter vormde hierbij een belangrijke inspiratiebron. De opening staat met opgewekte ritmes, dynamische contrasten en maatsoortwisselingenvoor de spontaniteit van kinderen. Het eerste en tweede deel vertellen over de liefde, zorg en toewijding die horen bij een ouder-kindrelatie. Die Eroffnung steht mit aufgeweckten Rhythmen, dynamischen Kontrasten, Taktartwechseln für die Unberechenbarkeit von Kindern. Der erste und zweite Satz erzahlen mit dissonanten Harmonien, aber auch mit schonen Melodien von Spannungen, Liebe und Sorge in der Eltern-Kind-Beziehung. Den Schluss bildet eine Fuge, die zu einem prachtvollen Choral führt: ein Bild stolzer Eltern mit ihrem Kind!

Un'ouverture spettacolare nella quale contrasti dinamici e dai ritmi vivaci si susseguono come a simboleggiare la straordinaria energia dei bambini. Il primo movimento, sulla scia dell'introduzione, anticipa una parte di solo che accompagna al secondo movimento, testimonianza dell'amore infinito dei genitori nei confronti dei figli. Una fuga basata sul tema iniziale contraddistingue il terzo movimento che conduce all'apoteosi finale.

Lion City Festival was commissioned as one of the test pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010, an annual event at which school ensembles from throughout Singapore can receive gold, silver or bronze awards for their performance. The English name for Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, which has Sanskrit roots meaning ‘Lion City’. Lion City Festival is in the form of a quick march in ABA form. An opening fanfare leads to a perky march tune which is taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a legato trio section before the main theme returns in varied form. Roaring fun!

Der Name dieses Werkes spielt auf den Löwen, das Wahrzeichen der Stadt Singapur, an. Philip Sparkes Komposition ist in der ABA-Form eines flotten Marsches geschrieben. Eine Eröffnungsfanfare führt zu einer munteren Marschmelodie, die vom gesamten Blasorchester aufgenommen wird. Dann kündigt ein Tonartwechsel den legato gespielten Trioteil an, bevor das Hauptthema in veränderter Form zurückkehrt. Löwenstark!

Singapura (du sanskrit singa, lion et pura, ville) est le nom malais de l’île de Singapour. Le symbole de cette cité-État est un animal tête de lion et au corps de poisson, le Merlion. Il garde l’embouchure du fleuve Singapour. Lion City Festival est une marche rapide, structurée selon la forme ABA. La fanfare d’ouverture chemine vers un air de marche, vif et gai, interprété par l’orchestre entier. Un changement de tonalité annonce le trio. Les lignes sont jouées avec le phrasé fl uide du legato, puis laissent la place au retour du thème premier, réexposé dans diverses formes.

La fanfara di apertura accompagna una melodia di marcia gaia e vivace interpretata dall’intero organico.
