Dramatic Prelude begins with a dramatic fanfare, which is followed by an easily accessible melody; a del segno takes you back to the dramatic fanfare and an ending as exciting as the beginning. Dramatic Prelude also offers an optional harp if you have one available. Building a pyramid chord, polychords and teaching balance are some of the teaching concepts in Dramatic Prelude. A Smith classic! Also available in Flexible Ensemble and Fanfare in brass ensembles.

An exciting and energetic snare drum solo begins this composition with the woodwinds foreshadowing material soon to come and a brass introduction, which is concluded by a beautiful bassoon cadenza. Credence prominently features the percussion section, especially the snare drum and timpani. With plenty of time signature changes, Credence gives the educator an opportunity to explain non-functional major chords, polychords and chromaticism. A concert and contest favorite.

Reflections is a musical portrayal of the people and moments in our lives which shape and change us. Musical elements from various sources are woven into a rich tapestry of sounds and colors that show the full expressive range of the band. Perfect for contest and festivals! Reflections by Robert Langenfeld, was commissioned by a consortium (alumni/friends/family/UCM Bands/ CTS Pubs) for Dr. Russell Coleman in celebration of his 90th birthday and his service as director of bands at the University of Central Missouri (CMSU) for 32 years. Langenfeld was given guidelines for the composition which included a clarinet soli (Coleman is a clarinetist), excerpts from Dance Prelude (commissioned by Dr. Coleman and the UCM Phi Mu Alpha chapter, written by Claude T. Smith for the CMSU (UCM) Band in 1978), the UCM Alma Mater and the UCM fight song, Go Mules. This work was premiered on June 17, 2018 by the Warrensburg Community Band, under guest conductor, Dr. Anthony Pursell, at the 2018 Missouri Bandmasters Association Summer Convention at Tan-Tar-A in Osage Beach, MO. Dr. Russell Coleman has been the conductor for the Warrensburg Community Band since 1985.

The first of two trumpet solos Smith wrote for Carl Doc Severinsen. If you have a trumpet player par excellence, then this piece is for your soloist and band. It begins with a dramatic opening followed by an Allegro. Smith then weaves in the blues for the soloist to play a wonderful lyric melody first, followed by an opportunity to adlib with the chord progression. The accompaniment is a grade 3.5, but the solo is most certainly a grade 6. Also available for trumpet solo and piano.

Impromptu for Bassoon and Piano is an energetic, lyrical solo, written for Smith's daughter, Pam, and easily accessible for a high school or college bassoonist. Based on a lighthearted melody, the solo has some technical passages based on arpeggios, challenging rhythmic passages in Smith's signature 7/8 and 9/8 bars and a complementary piano accompaniment. Bassoonists will enjoy performing this work which explores the entire range of the instrument, challenging the bassoonist to portray both expressive and spirited styles.
