Virginia Croft has taken a popular German canon and transformed it into a stunning new piece for young string groups. It begins with the canon as is, and then adds two other composed themes that complement the original tune. With its largely contrapuntal composition, this piece is an excellent opportunity for students to develop their independence.“All things shall perish from under the skyMusic alone shall live, music alone shall live,Music alone shall live, never to die.â€Here is an exciting treatment of a well-known simple canonic melody, first stated in its entirety by the cellos. As it passes through the voices, it should predominate over the accompanying embellishments, resulting in an energetic and exciting presentation of an old tune. What a wonderful way to teach the harmonic aspects of canonic melody while offering a lively and enjoyable experience for both performers and audience.

The song Bist du bei mir, geh' ich mit Freuden zum Sterben und zu meiner Ruh' (BWV 508) was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach for his second wife Anna Magdalena (1701-1760), who he married in 1721. The unparalleled popularity of this song is probably due to the magnificent, sensitive melody that wonderfully fits the anonymous text, in which a loved one is told that even death is beautiful as long as you are there with me. Jacob de Haan has produced this beautiful arrangement for brass band, which is suitable for many occasions. During his most productive period as an opera composer, Camille Saint-Saens also wrote sacred works, among which his Oratorio de Noel has enjoyed great worldwide popularity. The colorful and opulently orchestrated Messe de Requiem was composed in 1878 in Bern. The composer dedicated it to his patron, Albert Libon. We have published this edition both with its larger orchestral forces and to enable perfomances of the Requiem in slightly reduced scoring (without losing the special characteristics of the work), in a version with a smaller orchestra consisting of 11 winds, two harps, organ and string instruments. The full score reproduces the Urtext of the Requiem with its original scoring, whereas the performance material is presented and conceived so to enable it to be performed either in the original orchestration or the version with reduced forces. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2731700.

Thanks to its imaginative richness and sterling writing, Hoffmeister's Double Bass Concerto No. 1 has advanced to the rank of a popular audition concerto. But when compared with the transmitted sources, the previously available first edition of 1966 proved to be filled with errors. Tobias Glockler, double-bass player of the Dresdner Philharmonie, now presents a reliable Urtext in this edition. Through his competence as an instrumentalist, he even goes considerably further and offers various performance possibilities: the solo part can be played not only in solo and orchestral tuning, but also in the historical Viennese tuning. The C-major version, which is offered on hire, allows performances in orchestral tuning. The orchestral material in D major (sales material) is suited to the other two tunings. A beautiful and easy to read score, elegantly laid-out and with illuminating and informative preface notes. This concerto is among our most beautiful classical concerti, lyrical and inventive. It is a great pleasure to see our classical repertoire appear in such critical editions. (Rob Nairn in Bass World).

Ravel's ballet, Daphnis and Chloé, was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev and premiered with the Ballets Russes in Paris in 1912. The ballet is now rarely performed, but its Suite No. 2 remains popular. It consists of three movements, Lever du jour, Pantomime and Danse générale, that are played without interruption. Tohru Takahashi makes no compromises in his transcription, which calls for at least 60 musicians and an optional mixed chorus!

Franz Schubert's Mass in G major is one of the most popular settings of the mass ordinary: the charming song-like melodic writing, especially in the Kyrie and the Credo, forms a magical counterpoint to more concertante passages in the Gloria and the Sanctus. For a long time it was thought that Schubert's final version was scored for purely string orchestra, whilst a version with wind, brass, and timpani was thought to be an expanded orchestration by his brother Ferdinand Schubert. However, since the mid-1990s it has been known that the parts for trumpets and timpani were additionally composed by Franz Schubert himself for use ad libitum. The present edition offers this Klosterneuburg Version - with trumpets and timpani ad libitum, but without Ferdinand's wind parts - in an Urtext edition reflecting Schubert's own intended orchestration. This work is available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.4067500.

Please note: this edition has nothing to do with Arnold Schonberg! The Schonberg in question is a town near Kronberg in Germany's hilly Taunus region. Around the turn of the last century, the organist Ludwig Sauer (1861-1940) wanted to have a new organ built at his church there and came up with a novel way to finance it: he asked a number of composers to donate a musical piece. He eventually obtained 36 (!) pieces which he grouped together in the Organ Album for the Benefit of the New Organ in Schonberg by L. Sauer and had published in 1900 by Breitkopf & Hartel. Deserving particular mention is Max Reger's popular Introduction and Passacaglia in D minor, which was printed for the first time in that collection and which no doubt helped Sauer's project make organ history. The Schonberger Orgelalbum contains both free pieces and works based on chorales. Thanks to the brevity of the pieces, the book is ideal for use in teaching and in the religious service..

âHail! bright Cecilia, hail to thee. Great patroness of us and harmony!â â this exclamation opens the final chorus of Henry Purcellâs eponymous Ode to St. Cecilia from 1692. A paean to the power of music, the work is one of the undoubted masterpieces of English choral odes of that time. A resolution of the Musical Society of London in 1683 launched the great tradition of annual celebrations for St. Ceciliaâs Day (November 22), featuring a church service followed by performances of specially composed music. Over the years, Purcell wrote several odes for the occasion, of which this example from 1692 is one of the most popular. Four decades later, Handel would also contribute to the celebrations with his Alexanderâs Feast, HWV 75 (Carus 55.075), and his Ode for St. Ceciliaâs Day, HWV 76 (Carus 55.076).Purcellâs magnificent music, which features a huge range of tonal color and form, offers delightful parts for a variety of solo, ensemble, and choral settings. With its richly expressive palette, the Ode to St. Cecilia is an extremely rewarding work by the âOrpheus Britannicusâ, as Purcell was admiringly called by contemporaries.- Festive, rousing ode to music- Highlight of the choral ode genre in the 17th century. The cantata Freue dich, erloste Schar BWV 30 is one of Bach's last church cantatas. Originally composed as a parody of the cantata Angenehmes Wiederau BWV 30a for the Feast of St. John's Day in 1738, it still enjoys a great popularity today. Its extraordinary length (12 movements) made it possible for Bach to employ four vocal soloists who, together with instrumental soloists, choir and orchestra contribute to the generally festive character of this work. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3103000.
