Of this series of twenty-four études planned by Liszt only twelve were actually written, but the contemporary printed editions of the completed pieces (in the hope of a continuation) appeared with the series title 24 grandes études. By publishing these 12 concert studies it makes the earlier and technically more difficult version of the Transcendental Studies available for the first time since 1911 for study by performers and those engaged in music research. Contrary to the 1911 edition among the volumes of the first complete Liszt edition, NLE will publish also the text variants of some studies, an album leaf in F sharp major in facsimile and in transcription considered asthe 13th study planned by Liszt for the series, and the earlier versions of the so-called Mazeppa and Ab irato studies. In the volume will be published the puzzling album leaf, the so-called ''Prélude omnitonique'' and some similar album leaves, too.

Calling for the band to be divided into four separate ensembles (and spread apart if space permits), Villages explores a wide range of harmonic and rhythmic interplay between each of these musical “villages.” The opening creates a dense canopy of sound, out of which the unique identity of each group variously emerges then melts back into the texture. As the fast pace continues, melodic fragments are bounced from group to group with interjections from the percussion. A slower lyric section provides contrast before the frantic pace returns leading to the exciting conclusion. Innovative in its conception, this stunning work will expose your students and audience to dramatically new sounds for band! Duration: 8:15.

The first known canon of European art music, now in the British Museum in London, is preserved in a thirteenth-century manusript from the English abbey in Reading: This is the so-called summer canon, whose verses greet the advent of summer. An accompanying note elucidates the artistic layer-like construction of the sound structure: a two-voice foundation of bell-like, swinging pendulum tones supports an upper structure of four voices which enter at equal time intervals. The note terms the canon rota * round -, which makes reference to the turning, circling movement of the constantly pulsating sound. The circular figure originates in a vital, ages-old moving force in music-making, and it demands a dance-like execution. But the canon is also, through the interaction of the strictly ordered voice entries, convivially bound musical form. Carl Orff was able to choose no better fitting musical form for the Greetings to Youth at the Olympic Games 1972 in Munich than the medieval rota. In the connexion of the singing voices with the Orff instruments, today in world-wide use, a testimony of European tradition sounds in a living present.

Adler's ninth turn at string quartet composition was written for the Esterhazy Quartet, who were pleased to perform the world premiere in April, 2009 with the composer in attendance. Violinist Susan Jensen described the work as energetic, spirited, humorous and celebratory. The premiere follows an all-Adler 80th birthday celebration by the Esterhazy in the previous year, so this new String Quartet No. 9 is a treat. Three of the four movements proceed at a fast pace, and the Quartet is for advanced performers.

Kuhnau's Magnificat in C major is - apart from his Biblical Sonatas - considered to be his most ambitious and best known work. However, as recent research has revealed, there are indeed many other large-scale works among his oeuvre which are largely presumed lost today, apart from those that were published as first editions. Until now, only insufficient or erroneous editions of the Magnificat have been available, a piano reduction has not been available at all. Beyond that, editor David Erler has succeeded in tracking down new evidence on the authorship of four Laudes (insertion movements for performances over Christmas) and to carry out their altogether new placement in the main work. He was able to prove that Bach's Magnificat directly succeeded Kuhnaus's work and that the use of such Laudes was common in Leipzig's parish churches and beyond.

Pastoreles De Noël by André Jolivet is a piece for Flute, Bassoon and the Harp lasting nearly 13 minutes. This piece is really gentle and restrained which demonstrates the quality ofJolivet’s work but also reflects that period of WWII when France was under occupation. These scores are of medium level of ability. Pastoreles De Noël features four sections:L’étoile (the Star), Les Mages (the Wisemen), La Vierge et l’Enfant (the Virgin and the Child) and Entrée et Danse des Bergers (the Shepherds’ dance). Each of these parts describes a part oftheChristmas story, starting with the Flute and the Bassoon in a duet, followed by the entrance of the Harp to settle the first part. The second section is quieter, expressing the walk in the desert. The Virgin and the Child islike a lullaby and the piece finishes on a joyful dance to express happiness and devotion. André Jolivet is a French composer who was really inspired by the Antiquity, and had a strong interest foratonality. He also wrote many chamber music pieces, eleven concertos, some orchestral and some vocal music.

This six-movement chorale cantata was first performed on 26 December 1724. The text is based on the Lutheran translation of the early Christian hymn A solis ortus cardinem. The outer movements frame two arias for tenor and bass, and two secco recitatives for alto and soprano. The first and sixth movements are in old-fashioned style, with four-part vocal writing and colla parte instruments. In the aria (movement 2) the tenor is accompanied by an obbligato oboe d'amore, and in the 4th and most striking movement, the three string parts accompany the bass. The demands on the singers, instrumentalists, and chorus are typical of a Bach cantata. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3112100.

In 1892 Dvorak received a prestigious commission from New York to write a festive cantata to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America. In response he wrote an impressive work in a very short space of time - his Te Deum, which expresses in celebratory style the old hymn of praise in four effective, contrasting sections. In preparing the Carus edition, a careful assessment has been made of the variant readings of the autograph score and first printed edition, drawing on these as sources. The result is that the work is newly available in a modern, scholarly edition. The complete performance material is available on sale. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2718900.

It is the new, young Finland that will be described, and the composer gives us the description in the form of a song, a simple, four-part chorus, peculiar due to certain rhythmic accents [...]. It is a whole new folk song, or more correctly, [...] the song of our democratic Finnish folk. This is how Karl Flodin described his first aural impression of the tone poem Finlandia in 1899. In the aftermath of the February Manifesto implemented on 15 February 1899 by the Russian Emperor Nicholas II, artists expressed their support for the press and the freedom of speech in diverse cultural events arranged in Finland in the beginning of November 1899. A group of artists joined forces in arranging a performance of six historical tableaus. Jean Sibelius composed Music for the Press Celebration Days for this occasion. After several revisions, the music composed for the last tableau, Suomi heraa (Finland Awakes), became known as the tone poem Finlandia op. 26. As an independent work Finlandia quickly became part of the repertoire and is now one of the most frequently played and best known works by Sibelius. Today there are quite a number of arrangements of this popular composition. The original version is now published in our established Urtext-quality based on the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works.Compatible with the study score PB 3318.
