It was premiered in October 98 at the Eglise de la Madeleine in Rouen by my most loyal colleagues in the Arditti Quartet to whom the piece is dedicated.

Don Quichote de la Mancha is a tasteful musical adaptation of the famous novel by Miguel de Cervantes in four lively movements: The first movement presents the wise nobleman Don Quixote, and in the second movement we see Dulcinea, with whom the Don has an imaginary romance. The third movement deals with Don Quixote’s loyal servant, Sancho Panza, and in the fourth movement we meet Rocinante, the Don’s long-suffering horse!

Don Quichote de la Mancha erzählt den berühmten Roman von Miguel de Cervantes in vier Sätzen auf lebendige musikalisch nach: Der erste Satz stellt den klugen Edelmann Don Quichote vor. Im zweiten Satz erscheint Dulcinea, mit der Don Quichote eine eingebildete Romanze hat. Der dritte Satz handelt vom treuen, einfachen Knecht Sancho Pansa und der vierte Satz schließlich vom Pferd Rosinante, das mit seinem Herrn, der oft mehr auf der Erde als auf ihrem Rücken sitzt, viel mitmachen muss.

Don Quichote de la Mancha se compose de quatre pièces courtes (Don Quichote, l’ingénieux noble espagnol - Dulcinée : qu’il ne rencontrera jamais, est l’élue de son coeur qui il jure amour et fidélité - Sancho Panza : le serviteur loyal et juste l’ me sensible - Rocinante : la monture qui a beaucoup de mal supporter un cavalier qui passe plus de temps terre qu’en selle). Don Quichote de la Mancha est une oeuvre généreuse aux accents hispaniques.

In 2005 it was 400 years ago that the first volume of the world-famous novel ‘El ingenioso hidalgo don Quichote de La Mancha’, written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616), was published.

Don Quichote, a nobleman who is under the delusion that he must fight against injustice starts out on a journey with his steed Rosinante and his peasant squire Sancho Panza and experiences all kinds of remarkable adventures.
In the course of them his love for the lady Dulcinea of Tobosco plays an important role.
One of the most famous scenes is that of his fight against windmills on the plain of La Mancha, which he takes to be enormous, evil giants.

‘DonQuichote’ consists of four short pieces:
1. Don Quichote: the ingenious Spanish nobleman.
2. Dulcinea: the lady with whom this errant knight has an imaginary courtly love affair.
3. Sancho Panza: Don Quichote’s loyal and sensible servant who, compared to his master, is a simple soul.
4. Rosinante: the steed that has much to put up with considering it has a rider who often spends more time on the ground than in the saddle.

This composition is based on the life of the German cavalry general Hans Michael Elias von Obentraut (1574-1625), who was known for his nerve, loyalty and courage. The figure Van Obentraut is closely connected to the town of Seelze, where he died a heroic death and where a monument was erected in his honor. The work consists of four movements in which various aspects of this historical figure are featured. What is extra special about this work is the fact that its firs movement (Hymn for a Hero) had been made available as an easy version for flexible band. This makes it possible for a youth of beginner band to play along with a band of adults or advanced players. This hymn can also be played as a separate piece.
