When Joseph Haydn assumed the position as music director of the Court of Esterhazy in 1766, following the death of his predecessor, Gregor Joseph Werner, he began by composing his first and most extensive Missa solemnis. The title Missa Cellensis (later also known as the Cecilian Mass) and the date of an autograph score suggest that this work was probably commissioned by Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy for the 600th anniversary of the pilgrimage church Mariazell located in Styria. With regard to the scoring as well as form, this Mass is still in the tradition of the late baroque number mass. In contrast to previous mixed versions based on various sources, the new edition follows the authentic (original) version using the most reliable sources. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4060400.

Schubert’s famous Ave Maria was originally titled Ellens dritter Gesang and was the sixth song in the Fräulein vom See song cycle (after The Lady of the Lake by Walter Scott). Later the Latin prayer Ave Maria was set to the melody, creating one of his most well-known sacred songs ever. In this arrangement the melody line can be played by either a solo trumpet or by the entire trumpet section. Either option creates a wonderful atmosphere that will entertain and enlighten your audience. The Lady of the Lake.

Haydn’s eighth setting of the ordinary of the mass was composed in 1782 for performance in Mariazell, Austria. Ryan Kelly has selected the brief opening portion of the Gloria for this anthem, featuring Haydn’s exuberant, straightforward homophonic choral writing true to the Classical era. The accompaniment is an approachable orchestra reduction for piano with optional trumpets and timpani. Accessible for most SATB ensembles, this anthem offers choirs the exciting opportunity to sing an excerpt from a large-scale choral work.
