ââ¬ÅTo this day, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. His Three Pieces for Flute and Oboe, or two Flutes is an exquisite addition to the repertoire. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bozza won prizes for Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes, whilst remaining a prominent composer. These 4 Préludes for flute (treble [alto] recorder or txistu in f) and piano are originally written for txistu and follow the ambitus of the Basque instrument. The initial Prélude, Allegro, is marked by its joyous character, its aksak rhythm (3+3+2), its generous modulations and its uninterrupted flow in the spirit of the Humoresque. The second Prélude, Moderato, is distinguished by asofter expression, a principle of ornamental variation, combined with a search for tonal diversity. The third Prélude, also Moderato, is in ternary rhythm with long expressive melodic lines accompanied by chords in amphibraque rhythm. The conclusive Prestois a saltarello developed in a game of tight modulations.

Andante for oboe and piano was found only after the composers death in 2014. According to his private notes discovered by his family, it was written in 1951, which means that it is one of its earliest compositions. This one-part work, set in neoromantic aesthetics, is based on two themes. The first one - in D Minor - initially appears in the piano part, and then it is captured by the oboe. It puts a listener in a tranquil, sentimental mood. The second one - in D Major - is livelier and jollier (piu mosso), though in terms of melodic motifs some of its fragments come closer to the first theme in a form of its variation-style development. This is capped by a solo cadenza of the oboe that leads to the recapitulation of the first theme and the following tranquil, cantilena-style coda. Jozef Swiders Andante for oboe and piano, despite its charming simplicity, is a work full of reverie, nostalgia and subtle melancholy. This proves the young composer's liking for clarity, lyricism and romantic expression, typical of his late artistic work.

Guillaume Balay (1871-1943) served in the French military as a prolific Cornet player, having won first place in the 1894 Cornet Award competition at the National Academy of Music in Paris. His compositions were popular in the Cornet and brass repertoire at the time, including his Competition Piece for Cornet with Piano accompaniment.
