A short choral nocturne for SATB and organ, Pan ddaw ust y nos is a setting of a poem by Nesta Wyn Jones. Welsh speakers will respond to the subtle imagery and verbal nuance of the poet's wordplay, as well as to the intense lyric moment of charged reminiscence captured both in her evocation of bygone summer evenings and in Rhian Samuel's simple, evocative music. Pan ddaw ust y nos was written for the London Welsh Chorale, conductor Kenneth Bowen, was premiered at St David's Cathedral, West Wales, on 24 September 2005. An English translation by the composer is also included.

In good time for the Reformation anniversary year 2017, this edition offers four distinctive movements from Johann Sebastian Bach's Reformation cantatas in arrangements for choir and organ. From the cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott BWV 80 the ornate opening chorus, the fifth movement Und wenn die Welt voll Teufel war, with its impressive musical depiction of the battle between heavenly and evil powers, and the final chorale Das Wort sie sollen lassen stahn are included. These are joined by the festive chorale Nun danket alle Gott from the Reformation cantata Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild BWV 79. The transcription of Bach's orchestral writing for organ offers performers plenty of opportunity for artistic interpretation, and enables the movements to be performed in an attractive way even with limited resources.

The often-quoted Charles Wesley text is set here using the congregation as a central element of the music. First the phrases they sing are modeled by a soloist (or soprano section,) then supported by the soprano line, but eventually the congregation is left on its own to hold a note now and then while the choir moves on. Emotional and compelling, the piece is written with several accompanimental options: Piano can be used, playing from the choral score. The full score shows an optional handbell part (5 bells in a 2-oct. range), a separate organ part, and a special piano part to be used only if done with organ.

This hymn-anthem is based on a new tune of the composer's own devising. The 1806 text is given a lyrical treatment rather than the usual rollicking one, and the result is expressive and effective. The first stanza is in unison, the second split between TB and SA alternating. The third stanza is set for SATB voices. The fourth and final stanza has lower voices in unison and sopranos descanting. Duration: 4:10.
