Bach's cantata My God alone this heart possesses BWV 169 is from his third annual cantata cycle in Leipzig; it was first performed on 20 October 1726 for the 18th Sunday after Trinity. As recent research has shown, the text was written by the Leipzig student, Christoph Birkmann. With the exception of the final chorale, this is a cantata for solo alto with, of course, a rich orchestral scoring consisting of three oboes, obbligato organ and strings. The first purely instrumental movement can be traced back to an instrumental concerto, which has been lost, after Bach had also composed the Keyboard Concerto in E major BWV 1053. The lyrical-vocal highpoint of the cantata is the fifth movement, which is also based on the concerto and it shows off Bach's arranging artistry to the highest degree. Among the movements are an aria-like recitative vocal movement, as well as another aria with an almost virtuoso organ accompaniment. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3116900.

For SATB double choir unaccompanied This optimistic and affirmatory anthem sets a useful service text of general thanksgiving from the Book of Common Prayer. Chilcott makes full use of the imitation and antiphonal effects that these forces enable, while keeping the vocal lines well within the capabilities of most choirs.

Stearns' energetic setting of this 15th century text provides a great match of choral and organ textures. This anthem would be an ideal work to start off the fall choir season. In the words of the composer, I am responding to the text- always the text and what it illicits from my 60 year old reservoir of musical ideas. These many sacred choral works of mine are simply my response to the text I have chosen, combined with a long lifetime of prayer..

Mr. Stephan's objective with this work is to give each section an opportunity to be in the spotlight. Each soli section is a variation of some aspect of the opening theme and is designed to 'show off' an inherent trait of the section. This dynamic selection is not to be missed!

Welcome comebackBach's St John and St. Matthew Passions are popular and well established in concert life. Of a third, the Markus Passion, only Picander's original libretto is extant. Parallel arias from various cantatas replace the lacking music for arias, and instead of the lost recitative and the turba [crowd] choruses, the spoken gospel text is bilingually published in this edition (in German/English). The freshly-prepared performance material including a detailed commentary is supplemented by a newly-arranged piano reduction.,,Une version qui n'a rien d'authentique, mais qui tient la route. C'est du Bach de bout en bout et, contrairement a d'autres reconstitutions, l'editeur ne propose rien pour les recitatifs. L'evangeliste pourrait meme etre un recitant. Interessante suggestion. (Alain Paris, La Lettre du Musicien)The music scholar Malcolm Bruno has prepared a new reconstruction of the work based on the meanwhile established parody model Trauerode BWV 198.
