This piece was inspired by a variety of music such as Broadway musicals, French cancan, and circus marches. A special rhythm pattern called “Ipponjime†(or “Sanbonjimeâ€) is played by the percussion (3 + 3 + 3 + 1) in the first four measures.This is how people freely clap their hands when ceremonies or parties end in Japan. This custom of clapping hands reflects Japanese people’s spirit to readily move on to the next step. Afro-Cuban composer Joseph (José) White Lafitte studied violin and composition at the Paris Conservatory between 1855 and 1871, winning the 1856 First Grand Prize. He eventually became a French citizen in 1870, leaving Paris only for a period of time between 1877 to 1889 when he was director of the Imperial Conservatory in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. White composed mainly for his own instrument, which happened to be the famous 1737 Swansong Stradivari violin. In addition to numerous etudes and a virtuosic violin concerto, White wrote this habanera for two violins, La Bella Cubana. In this string orchestra arrangement, the lyrical melodic solos are spread throughout the orchestra. Traditional Cuban dance rhythms in the contrasting middle theme capture the vibrant joy of the original work.

Since 1968, the blue cornflower has been the national flower of Estonia. During the Soviet rule, this flower also served as a symbol of the resistance. For this reason, composer Rob Goorhuis gave this work—which is based on Estonian folk melodies—the title The Land of the Cornflower.Estonia has a rich folk dance tradition. The dance melodies are often related to the folk music of surrounding countries or even further away, for example the padespaan, a corruption of the term Pas d’Espagne (Spanish dance). In The Land of the Cornflower, Rob Goorhuis gives us an impression of Estonia, and then brings the folk melodies Kohaanu¹ka, Minoorne labajalgand Padespaan into the limelight.The work was commissioned by the Vabariiklik Orkestrijuhtide Puhkpilliorkester (conductor Bert Langeler) De blauwe korenbloem is sinds 1968 de nationale bloem van Estland. Tijdens de Sovjetoverheersing was deze bloem tevens het symbool van het verzet. This work takes both its name and inspiration from a lighthouse “Sword Cape†that keeps watch near Japan’s naval base. The piece describes how, come rain or shine, the lighthouse bids a safe journey to departing ships, guides them during their travels and eventually welcomes them home again. The music evokes many musical images - grand ships sailing by, white-capped waves, the deep blue of the ocean and the light of ‘sword cape†as it silently guides ships over the mysterious waters.Dieses Werk wurde von einem Leuchtturm mit dem Namen Schwert-Kap“ inspiriert, der in der Nähe des Marinestützpunkts von Japan steht. Es beschreibt, wie die Schiffe bei jedem Wetter von diesem Leuchtturm verabschiedet, auf ihrem Weg geleitet und bei der Rückkehr willkommen geheißen werden. L’origine del titolo ha due significati: da una parte si ispira al faro di Tsurugizaki (letteralmente “estremit della spadaâ€), la cui luce serve come punto di riferimento tra la terra ed il mare, e dall’altra alla luce emanata dalla spada che appartiene alla grande tradizione degli ufficiali di marina. Fantasy and Fugue in D minor BWV 905 is one of Bach's least known works originally written for keyboard. The Fantasy is of moderate tempo and relatively short. The top two lines have many suspensions while the bottom line (optionally performed on Tuba) is scalelike. The Fugue is more lengthy with the top lines trading off short repeated passages while the bass line winds around alternating scales and octave jumps.Mr. Sauer's excellent arrangement is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 6 minutes in length. All parts are in bass clef.
