Another amazing, exciting chart has been added to the Pat Metheny Series! Bob Curnow's arrangement of Metheny/Mays' composition Stranger In Town hits you in the face right from the start and ends in the same manner. With typical Metheny/Mays flavor, there is a musical shift in the middle as solo space for tenor saxophone emerges, followed by a full ensemble interlude which then takes us to a peak ending. Originally recorded by PMG on their album We Live Here, Curnow has once again masterfully arranged this tune to fit perfectly in a big band setting! 5-4-4-4.

This Oliver Nelson melody was originally recorded with a small group. Bob Curnow took this great tune and arranged it for big band in a very hip way! Set in an easy swing feel, this chart has quite a bluesy feel to it while providing a nice variation to the standard blues changes that you might not expect. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trombone and piano. In this pro (original) version, you will find Oliver Nelson's amazing solo transcribed and arranged as a trumpet soli. The Count Basie Orchestra performed the music of Billy Byers for many, many years. His arrangement of Come Fly With Me is recorded on the Basie album Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra. Set in an up-tempo swing feel, Byers hits it hard from bar 1 and doesn't let up until the end of the chart. The interplay between saxophones and brass is clever and energetic, while the full ensemble writing is classic Basie sound at its finest. There is solo space for tenor saxophone, with fantastic ensemble backgrounds throughout much of it. No jazz library is complete without this classic Count Basie chart! 5-4-4-4.

This is a fast, swing chart that is a feature for tenor saxophone. The soloist gets to blow in a free-form setting, or the soloing can be done in time with the rhythm section. The rest of the band plays a neat, tight introduction to the improvisation, and they follow the solo with the same swinging, nifty music as the front end. Here is another chart written for Stan Kenton (in the mid-1950's), that was never recorded by the band. It is a sensational piece, a real flag-waver which features alto saxophone from top to bottom. Great ensemble figures propel the soloist ever onward. This up-tempo swing chart is refreshing, with band vs soloist, great background figures, a very hip key change and excitement throughout. A wonderful feature for your hot alto saxophonist. Typical, great Holman. 5-5-5-3.

This beautiful arrangement of the lovely popular Michel Legrand ballad was originally scored for the Tonight Show Band with Doc Severinsen. It is an alto saxophone feature throughout. The entire solo is written out (with changes provided to allow for improvisation). The accompanying band parts are very simple to play, making this chart accessible to most middle school bands. 5-4-4-4.

Another ingenious arrangement from the towering Rich DeRosa, this up-tempo swing chart is a journey through creative waters from beginning to end and will not disappoint. Written for and recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Birdland Dream Band, this chart by Willie Maiden is uncharacteristically easy to play for the band due to very reasonable brass ranges. However, this is a 2 tenor saxophone and 2 trombone feature throughout. While quite a bit of the solos are written out, there is also a lot of space for improvisation. This is one of Willie's most delightful pieces scored for Maynard. 5-4-4-3.

Here is a free swinging, remarkable chart from a new writer for Sierra. Allan Ganley's reputation and legacy in England drew our attention to this marvelous arrangement of One Morning in May. The arrangement is recorded on the CD June Time (Vocalion), and stands among the best versions out there. Starting with a soft, swinging ensemble, the chart moves into space for blowing for tenor saxophone and trumpet, returning to the initial feel with a wonderful, warm ending. All brass ranges are very moderate. This will be a great addition to any jazz band library. 5-4-4-4.
