Inspired by the operetta successes of Jacques Offenbach in Vienna, Franz von Suppé (1819-1895) began composing his first stage works from 1860 onward. “Isabella,” his comedic opera in one act from 1869, had its premiere in Vienna. The overture features both Spanish and Viennese melodies. Although Suppé's music doesn't always exhibit a typical Viennese sound, he secured a place in concert halls with his overtures such as “Poet and Peasant” or “Light Cavalry.”.

In September 2024, we celebrate the 200th birthday of the Upper Austrian composer and organist Anton Bruckner. Many of his well-known works have already been arranged for wind orchestras, but the Quadrille, originally composed for piano for four hands, is still missing in the repertoire. This arrangement by Andreas Ziegelbäck aims to fill that gap, staying closer to the original piano version. While the six movements of the piece can be seen as standalone short pieces, it is recommended to perform all movements. This arrangement expands Anton Bruckner's repertoire for wind orchestras with a rarely played musical gem.

The Juvavum Fanfare was composed for the closing concert of the first part-time University course in Wind Orchestra Conducting at the renowned Mozarteum University Salzburg, which took place from 2019 to 2021 for the first time. This celebratory opening composition is dedicated to the esteemed course instructor and conductor, Martin Fuchsberger, as well as to all the graduates who successfully completed this program. The name of the fanfare, “Juvavum,” derives from the ancient Roman name for Salzburg. This connection to Salzburg is not only evident in the premiere of the piece at the Mozarteum Salzburg but also in its musical depth. Thematically, the initial fanfare and subsequent lyrical section draw from the melody of Salzburg's regional anthem, “Land uns'rer Väter.” The majestic fanfare echoes the opening intervals of this anthem. From bar 27 onward, a direct citation of the melodic theme can be heard. Both the fanfare motifs and the vocal lines of this anthem are eventually brought together in an exhilarating final ection. The Juvavum Fanfare is ideally suited to ceremonially open concerts and provides an engaging experience for both listeners and musicians alike due to its appropriate length.

What are the true qualities of a person? Outward beauty or inner values? Or perhaps a balance of the two? This question has probably been posed by everyone at some time or another, and the answer is as challenging as it is subjective. This is also the theme of this work. The poet and soldier Cyrano de Bergerac is known for his big nose and his great intellect. The 17th century novelist harbours feelings for the beautiful Roxane but is sure that this love will never be reciprocated. Roxane herself falls in love with the cadet Christian de Neuvillette, who is certainly handsome but could be described as stupid. Cyrano de Bergerac writes love poems on behalf of Christian to win Roxanes heart. And then there is the Count Guiche, who is married but also wants to make her is mistress. Christian and Roxane eventually marry and the furious Count Guiche sends Christian and Cyrano, who serve together in the Captains of Gascony regiment, to the front and, some months later, on a suicide mission. Shortly before the battle, Roxane confesses to her husband that she no longer loves him so much for his beauty as for his inner values. Christian is dismayed and begs Cyrano to tell Roxane the truth, but he cant bring himself to do so. Christian de Neuvillette dies in battle and Cyrano de Bergerac remains silent about the true provenance of the letters. Only much later does the truth come to light: scarred by the war, Cyrano visits Roxane in the convent where she has been living since Christians death and confesses his love for her. He ultimately dies in Roxanes arms.

“Golden Hour” is a slow work that describes the magical moment of the golden hour before sunset, when the world melts into warm shades of colour. The setting sun bathes everything in a soft, golden light and nature shines in its most beautiful splendour and time seems to stand still. But darkness also slowly falls and the day takes its quiet farewell.

The composition 'Austrian Folk Fusion' vividly illustrates how old and new can harmoniously blend together. Traditional music serves as a solid foundation for creative developments and modern interpretations. This is demonstrated in the composition through the transition from traditional Ländler to contemporary rhythms. Skillful changes in tempo and meter, as well as diverse variations in motifs, support the journey from the traditional sounds to the modern musical language.

Empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sisi, led a fascinating life shaped by external constraints and internal struggles. Born in 1837 in Munich, she became Empress through her marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph I. Despite the highs and lows of her marriage, she bore four children. Sisi's extraordinary beauty and her distinctive fashion sense were as well-known as her longing for freedom, which led her on numerous journeys throughout Europe, with a particular affinity for Hungary. Her relationships with the men in her life, especially Emperor Franz Joseph I. and Count Gyula Andrássy, hold significance. The composition by Otto M. Schwarz explores Sisi's freedom-loving nature and her loves, with the composer incorporating short musical motifs from her era.

Bleak Forest is a piece for smaller concert bands and offers the musicians above all space to improve their sound and their effect playing. The technical requirements are therefore deliberately kept low. With this piece, the composer won the VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022. Thematically, the work is influenced by the composer's childhood memories. In his hometown there was a dark and mysterious forest, that seemed to the children in the small village to be magical. Without a reasonable explanation, every trip into the woods was exciting and somewhat terrifying. There were tales of dangerous animals, which can be heard at the beginning of the piece, as well as magical beasts. The magic of the forest is depicted musically from bar 70 in the andante section. The snapping of the fingers represents single raindrops. From bar 99 onwards, we hear the trek home, with the occasional moments of trepidation as the children spook each other with their fanciful tales. In the end, though, we arrive safely at home because after all, magical beasts only exist in fairy tales dont they? Andreas Ziegelbäck studied music education at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and history at the Paris Lodron Universität, Salzburg. In addition to his studies, he trained in ensemble conducting for wind orchestra with conductor and composer Thomas Doss. It was Doss who sparked Ziegelbäck's interest in composing. In 2021, Andreas Ziegelbäck completed his composition studies with Johannes Maria Staud. In 2020, he took part in a brass band composition masterclass in Bern with Oliver Waespi, followed by a premiere by the Swiss Army Brass Band.

The poem “The Resurrection” by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock was set to music by Gustav Mahler in the fifth movement of his Second Symphony, known as the “Resurrection.” The central passage from Mahler's musical adaptation was incorporated into “A Tribute to Mahler,” a composition created in homage to Mahler, 100 years after his death. Powerful brass tones and delicate woodwind melodies alternate in a Mahleresque manner with horn and trumpet signals from a distance. The choir is delicately complemented by the solo alto saxophone. “A Tribute to Mahler” aims to, like a continuation “after a short repose,” offer us a glimpse into the blissful world to which we will all eventually journey.

“Jet Stream” is a composition for a small wind orchestra. The term “Jet Stream” refers to a high-speed wind that occurs in the lowermost layer of Earth's atmosphere. Different temperature regions on Earth's surface give rise to these strong winds, particularly in the border areas where warm and cold air masses separate. The horizontally flowing winds around the globe can reach speeds of up to 540 kilometers per hour, approximately fifteen kilometers above our heads. These rapid wind movements play a crucial role in shaping our planet's weather and climate. To symbolize the wind, a device known as a “Howling Tube” is employed in the percussion section. The composition “Jet Stream” aims to capture the intensity and energy of these high-altitude winds in a musically and technically accessible manner. Simultaneously, it serves as a reminder, through its dramatic musical language, to treat our environment with greater care. Due to its modest instrumentation, the piece is particularly suitable for wind ensembles, including school wind bands.

The work “Fragments” is an extremely powerful and energetic Concertino for trombone, full of different tonal colours and based on two motifs that are broken down into their fragments and processed further. The slightly playful main motif is presented by the soloist after an imposing introduction and gradually develops jazzy elements without abandoning the contemporary spirit. Throughout the work, the last three notes of the introductory motif are presented both as a short, shrill fragment and as a lyrical theme, which supports the constant alternation between leggero and marcato. An ostinato, which is carried through all registers, gives the work the necessary drift and serves as a common thread to connect the different parts. “Fragments” was commissioned by the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the “De klenge Maarnicher Festival” and was a compulsory piece for the final round of the “1st Michel Becquet International Trombone Competition”.

The composition opens with a majestic introduction, where the rhythmic motif played by the brass section gradually fades, giving way to a more lively Allegro.
