The well-known 16th Century canon by Thomas Tallis is as effective as it is simple. This arrangement includes four verses of the melody: the first in the form of canon; the second for brass; the third for woodwind and the fourth for the entire orchestra. Philip Sparke’s arrangement is also well suited for incomplete brass ensembles. Eenvoudig, maar met een bijzondere uitwerking. Dat is deze bekende canon van Thomas Tallis uit de zestiende eeuw. Beethoven’s Greeting is geschreven ter gelegenheid van het 400-jarig bestaan van de Canadese stad Quebec. Philip Sparke schreef deze fantasie, gebaseerd op Beethovens canon Freu’ dich des Lebens, als muzikale groet aandeze stad. Beethoven’s Greeting heeft een langzame inleiding die is gebaseerd op de canon, dan volgt een levendig Vivo, dat later dient als discant van de canon - die terugkomt in de zang van het optionele koor (SATB).De melodie is ook verweven in de orkestratie.Beethoven’s Greeting wurde zur 400-Jahrfeier der kanadischen Stadt Quebec geschrieben. Pour célébrer cet événement, la Musique des Voltigeurs de Québec, une unité d’infanterie de la force terrestre des Forces canadiennes, a fait appel au compositeur Philip Sparke pour l’écriture de deux œuvres de concert (disponibles sur un compact disc édité spécialement pour cette occasion). Philip Sparke a composé Sounds of the Saint Lawrence (Échos du Saint-Laurent), une suite de chants traditionnels québécois, et cette fantaisie libre sur le canon Freu’ dich des Lebens de Ludwig van Beethoven. L’histoire de ce canon est absolument fascinante. En1822, Théodore Frédéric Molt, un professeur, auteur, pianiste et organiste allemand - ancien soldat dans l'armée napoléonienne ayant combattu Waterloo - arrive Québec. En 1825, il retourne en Europe afin de parfaire sa formation. Au cours de son séjour, il rend visite Beethoven. Quelques jours plus tard, il fait parvenir une lettre au compositeur sourd en incluant une feuille blanche sur laquelle il lui demande d'écrire « du fond de son grand cœur » un souvenir « qui restera pour moi, une distance qu'il me faudra presque 3000 heures pour parcourir, un document éternellement précieux. »Beethoven accepte et, le 16 décembre 1825 (jour de ses cinquante-cinq ans), il présente Théodore Molt le canon Freu’ dich des Lebens Le manuscrit est actuellement conservé dans une collection canadienne.Beethoven’s Greeting (“La signature de Beethovenâ€) débute avec une introduction lente basée sur le canon. S’ensuit un Vivo qui sera repris ultérieurement sous la forme d’un déchant la mélodie du canon. Le thème du canon est chanté par le chœur quatre voix (SATB) optionnel (AMP 243-050), mais la mélodie est également présente dans l’orchestration.

A Man’s Destiny has the Frisian line ‘Yn Ieren en Sinen’ (‘with much conviction’) as its subtitle. The work was commissioned by CMV Harmonie Sneek (based in Friesland, The Netherlands) to acknowledge their 95th anniversary. The composer based this work on the life of a former member of the band, who played flugelhorn in the ensemble until the age of 86. Their favourite piece of music, ‘Canon’ by Thomas Tallis, provided a great deal of musical inspiration for this characteristic and versatile work.A Man’s Destiny heeft als ondertitel de Friese regel ‘Yn Ieren en Sinen’ (vanuit volle overtuiging) meegekregen. Het werk is geschreven in opdracht van de CMV Harmonie Sneek ter gelegenheid van haar 95-jarig jubileum. De componist baseerde de compositie op het leven van een oud-lid van de vereniging een man die tot zijn 86e jaar de bugel bespeelde. Golden Winds was commissioned by Jugendblasorchester Schramberg, Germany, to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2012. They gave the premiere, conducted by Andreas Hirt, at their Christmas concert that year.The work opens with a nervously energetic theme in the lower woodwinds, which is developed in canon and builds to climax for the whole band. The mood subsides to introduce a meditative section featuring first the clarinets and then a rich, chorale-like theme which grows into a passionate tutti. This then leads to the main body of the piece, a rhythmic vivo, which introduces its main theme quietly before it is taken up by the full band. A brief bridge passage thenintroduces a muscular second subject which develops until the bridge passage reappears to lead to a repeat of the main theme. This is transformed to herald a return of the opening bars of the piece, which now bring the work to a celebratory close. Golden Winds werd geschreven in opdracht van het Jugendblasorchester Schramberg uit Duitsland, dat in 2012 zijn vijftigjarig bestaan vierde. Het orkest bracht het werk in premiere tijdens het kerstconcert van het jubileumjaar, onder leiding van dirigent Andreas Hirt.De compositie begint met een koortsachtig, energiek thema in het lage hout. Die Premiere fand beim Weihnachtskonzert selbigen Jahres unter der Leitung von Andreas Hirt statt.Das Werk setzt mit einem Thema voll gespannter Energie in den tiefen Holzblasern ein, das kanonisch weiterentwickelt wird und sich zu einem Hohepunkt fur das gesamte Orchester aufbaut. Diese Stimmung klingt ab zugunsten eines meditativen Abschnitts, der zunachst die Klarinetten in den Vordergrund ruckt und dann ein volltonendes, choralartiges Thema, das zu einem leidenschaftlichen Tutti anschwillt. Dieses fuhrt zum Hauptteil des Stuckes, einem rhythmischen Vivo, das seinHauptthema leise vorstellt, bevor es vom gesamten Orchester aufgenommen wird. Eine kurze Uberleitung prasentiert ein kraftvolles zweites Thema, das weiterentwickelt wird bis die Uberleitung zuruckkehrt und die Wiederholung des Hauptthemas bewirkt. Dieses verwandelt sich in eine Ankundigung der Eroffnungstakte, die das Werk nun zu einem festlichen Schluss fuhren. Fanfare for an Occasion was written to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Anglo Music Press, the publishing company dedicated to the works of British composer, Philip Sparke. It is a bright and festive work in which the main theme starts on the tenor instruments of the band before appearing as canonical imitation by all sections in turn. A short, repeated bridge passage leads to a second theme on the saxes that is taken up by the full band and leads back to a return of the main theme and a repeat of the second subject, which brings the fanfare to a brilliant close.

This moving piece embodies all the simplicity of Russian Orthodox music, yet displays the sweeping beauty of Rachmaninov's lyricism. Conductors will appreciate the opportunity to teach extended phrases and legato style. Vespers is the sunset evening prayer of the Orthodox Church, and during the canonical hours of an all-night vigil, the Ave Maria would be sung at midnight, hence the 12 chime notes at the apex of the piece. For a special effect, the mallet parts can be doubled off-stage to simulate church bells. (2:40).

In 1878, on a commission from his publisher, Anton n Dvorák wrote a series of eight Slavonic dances. Modelled on Johannes Brahmsâ?? famous Hungarian Dances, although in contrast to Brahmsâ?? work, Dvorák used no original melodies. Wil van der Beek has arranged No. 7, a brisk 2/4 dance, as well as No. 8, a passionate, exuberant furiant in 3/4. In 1878 schreef Dvoøák op verzoek van zijn uitgever een serie van acht Slavische dansen. Daarbij zouden de beroemde Hongaarse dansen van Brahms als voorbeeld moeten dienen. Dvoøák had echter zijn eigen opvattingover het kunstzinnigvormgeven van (volks)dansen. Waar Brahms meerdere bestaande melodieën van dansen uitHongarije gebruikte, beperkte Dvoøák zich tot karakteristieke ritmische patronen van dansvormen uit zijn vaderland. Oorspronkelijk zijn de Slavischedansen gecomponeerd voor klavier vierhandig. Vrij spoedig maakte Dvoøák zelf een versie voor orkest, waarmee hij wereldroem vergaarde.
