The introductory theme of this composition echoes the majestic size of the mountains that are visible from the picture-postcard Cortina d’Ampezzo—the so called Queen of the Dolomites. Then we hear a lyrical theme, in which we feel the peacefulness of the surrounding countryside. We can even hear the hustle and bustle of the popular ski resort, before the two opening themes return in reverse order to bring this musical sight-seeing excursion to a close.

In 2006 Brabant will be celebrating it’s 900th anniversary. On May 13th 1106 the count Van Leuven was appointed duke of Brabant. This was the birth of the duchy of Brabant. For centuries this duchy, situated in the heart of the Netherlands, was the primary of the seventeen provinces in the Lowlands. Brabant formed with it’s capital cities Brussels, Leuven, Antwerp and ‘s-Hertogenbosch the focal point for politics, culture and economy. The revolution against Spain (1566-1648) caused a fracture between the North and South. The old duchy was divided into a Dutch and Belgian part. Even though each had their own historical background, the bond forged in the past was partially keptalive. To this day we still have a duke of Brabant. Brabantia Aeterna takes you on a musical journey through 900 years of Brabant history. Eeuwenlang was dit hertogdom, gelegen in het hart van de Nederlanden, het eerstein rang van de zeventien gewesten van de Lage Landen. Brabant vormde met zijn hoofdsteden Brussel, Leuven, Antwerpen en 's-Hertogenbosch het brandpunt van bestuur, cultuur en economie. De Opstand tegen Spanje (1566-1648) brachtechter een scheuring tussen Noord en Zuid teweeg. Het oude hertogdom viel uiteen in een Nederlands en een Belgisch deel. Hoewel ieder zijn eigen weg in de geschiedenis ging, zou de band die in het verleden was gesmeed gedeeltelijkblijven bestaan. Vandaag de dag hebben we nog steeds een hertog van Brabant. Brabantia Aeterna neemt u mee op een muzikale reis door 900 jaar Brabant. Het is een boeiende tocht langs oorlog en vrede, lief en leed, voorspoed entegenslag, bloei en verval. The Last Rose of Summer is a popular Irish folksong. The original text was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) and the melody is a traditional air titled The Groves of Blarney. The German composer Friedrich von Flotow (1812-1883) cleverly used this song in his opera Martha, a light-hearted, successful work that is still regularly performed. The melancholy character of The Last Rose of Summer still appeals to many people in the present day and this arrangement by Wil van der Beek certainly does justice to the beauty of the melody. A wonderful item to change the mood of any performance.
