In Japan, July the 7th is a holiday known as Tanabata, for which large celebrations are held throughout the country. The holiday is based on a legend about a young man and a young woman who are separated by the Milky Way and can only see each other once a year on this night. The Seventh Night of July is Itaru Sakai’s musical interpretation of this romantic legend. The flugel horn and euphonium solos during the middle movement represent the two main themes from the legend.

Volgens een legende mogen een jonge man en vrouw in de vorm van twee sterren die door de Melkweg van elkaar gescheiden zijn elkaar alleen op deze ene avond in het jaar ontmoeten. The Seventh Night of July is Itaru Sakai’s muzikale weerspiegeling van dit romantische verhaal. De bugel- en euphoniumsolo’s in het middelste deel staan symbool voor de hoofdpersonen uit de legende.

Er geht auf eine Legende zurück, der zufolge ein junger Mann und eine junge Frau, die durch die Milchstraße voneinander getrennt sind, sich nur in dieser einen Nacht sehen dürfen. In The Seventh Night of July vertonte Itaru Sakai diese romantische Legende. Die im mittleren Satz eingeschobenen Flügelhorn- und Euphonium-Soli symbolisieren die beiden Hauptthemen der Erzählung.

The Seventh Night of July est l’interprétation musicale d’Itaru Sakai de cette légende romantique. The Dylan Thomas poem Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night was the motivation for this musical composition. While not a programmatic depiction of the poem, the work attempts to recreate the essence of the poem in sound. The opening motive, representative of the life force, permeates much of the work. The use of sound layers - in the form of polytonal hymns - calls to mind the struggles and persistence of the human spirit and its refusal to go gentle. A substantial and dramatic work for mature ensembles. Dur: 11:15 (Grade 5).

In A Knight's Tale, Wilco Moerman takes the listener back to the Middle Ages, when castles, knights’ tournaments and charming ladies were the order of the day. It describes scenes of the middle ages as one would expect from fairytales or movies featuring this period - with a duel between knights, hidden romances and a battlefield. The composer makes sure that all groups are well represented and includes lots of brass and percussion as well as chanting melodies and spectacular virtuoso segments which make this piece a perfect contest or concert opportunity.

Wilco Moerman neemt de luisteraar in A Knight's Tale mee terug naar de middeleeuwen, toen kastelen, riddertoernooien en beeldschone jonkvrouwen tot de dagelijkse realiteit behoorden. Het werk beschrijft verschillende taferelen waaronder een gevecht tussen ridders, verborgen romances en een heus slagveld. De componist laat alle instrumentgroepen aan bod komen en heeft veel koper en slagwerk in de muziek verwerkt, naast zangerige melodieën en spectaculaire virtuoze passages. Hiermee kan elk orkest voor de dag komen, zowel in een wedstrijd als op een concert!

A Knight‘s Tale versetzt den Zuhörer zurück ins Mittelalter, die Zeit der Burgen, Ritterturniere und Edelfräuleins. Es beschreibt mittelalterliche Szenen, wie man sie aus Marchen oder Film kennt: ein Duell, heimliche Liebschaften und eine Schlacht. Alle Instrumentengruppen sind hier gut vertreten. Es gibt viel Blechblaser und Schlagwerk, aber auch kantable Melodien und virtuose Abschnitte. Ein perfektes Wettbewerbs- und Konzertstuck!

Dans A Knight’s Tale, Wilco Moerman transporte l’auditeur au Moyen- ge, quand les ch teaux, les tournois de chevaliers et les belles femmes étaient l’ordre du jour. L’œuvre décrit en musique des scènes de cette époque sorties d’un conte ou film avec des duels entre chevaliers, des romances secrètes et un champ de bataille. The composition the Lonesome Knight was based on a fairytale. The piece was written by Saskia Apon for the National Brass Band Championships 2001.

Once upon a time there was a knight who went to fight and defeat the dragon that had beenkilling the people of his town.
There is a short but intense battle between the two and the knight is triumphant. However whilst persuing the dragon the knight has travelled far away from his home and now is lost. He roames around trying to findhis way home, but exhausted and weary he falls to the ground. He awakens startled by a Giant and a group of Goblins who are celebrating the death of the dragon.
The knight joins in the festivities but after a long evening is once more leftalone.
The sun rises the following morning and he sees a castle on the horizon. He enthousiastcally ventures towards the castle in the hope of meeting other people.
However he becomes greatly disillusioned when there is none to be found. Inhis desperation the knight climbs the tower ready to jump off.
Suddenly he hears a heavenly voice. Right before him is the most beautiful princess he has ever seen. She graciously thanks him for killing the dragon, a spark ingnites between themand they build a life together and.... live happily ever after!

Saskia Apon studied harp at Rotterdam School of music. With this instrument she rounded of her studies by passing with credit, however it was her love of composition thatremained her focus.
Self-taught, she began composing at the age of nine. Since then she has written pieces for The Dutch Brass Quintet, The Dutch Brass Ensemble, The Rotterdam Trombone Quartet and the brass band quintet Brass Ability.
Atpresent she is the in-house arranger for The Rotterdam Philarmonic Brass Ensemble.
Besides the customary attention for the real splashworks she endeavours to add value to the melodic function of the brass wind instruments in her music.
