The overture to Giuseppe Verdi's 1862 opera La Forza del Destino (The Power of Fate) has remained standard repertoire for orchestras around the world. In this imaginative work for winds, Jay Bocook pays homage to the mastery of Verdi and begins with the ominous 3-note “fate” theme from the overture. Throughout the piece melodies are recast and harmonies are embellished, culminating in an exhilarating conclusion where the final seven bars quote Verdi's original almost identically. A brilliant addition to the wind band repertoire.

This piece, as the title might suggest, brings together Verdi’s greatest operatic triumphs. Amongst his best hits are Nabucco from 1842, which signified a turn-around after the flop of a previous opera, as well as Rigoletto, which in 1851 propelled him to international fame. Verdi’s Triumphs features: Triumphmarch and Su! Del nilo al sacro lido from Aida, the Prisoners’ Freedom Choir from Nabucco and La donna è mobile from Rigoletto.

This work brings fragments from three of Giuseppe Verdi’s operas together in a single composition. Opening the work is the Triumphal March from Aida. Next come two notable motifs from La forza del destino, before the famous Anvil Chorus from Il Trovatore. Wil van der Beek’s arrangement for concert band is a rousing hit with opera melodies that everyone knows and loves.

In dit werk heeft Wil van der Beek een aantal beroemde fragmenten samengevoegd uit een drietal opera’s van deze Italiaanse componist. Hij start met de Triomfmars uit A da (maat 1-84). Daarna volgen een tweetal markante motieven uit La forza del destino (maat 85-140). Tenslotte weerklinkt het bekende Zigeunerkoor, ook wel Aambeeldkoor genoemd (maat 141-193) uit Il Trovatore. Verdi op zijn best!
