The song Bist du bei mir, geh’ ich mit Freuden zum Sterben und zu meiner Ruh’ (BWV 508) was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach for his second wife Anna Magdalena (1701-1760), who he married in 1721.The popularity of this song is probably due to the magnificent, sensitive melody that fits wonderfully with the text, in which a loved one is told that even death is beautiful “as long as you are there with me.” This beautiful arrangement by Jacob de Haan is suitable for use in any concert.

Het lied Bist du bei mir, geh’ ich mit freuden zum Sterben und zu meiner Ruh (BWV 508) werd gecomponeerd door Johann Sebastian Bach voor zijn tweede vrouw Anna Magdalena (1701-1760), met wie hij in 1721 trouwde. Dit lied dankt zijnongeëvenaarde populariteit waarschijnlijk aan de schitterende, gevoelige melodie die prachtig aansluit bij de tekst, waarin een geliefde te horen krijgt dat zelfs de dood mooi is ‘zolang jij bij me bent’. Dit prachtige arrangementvoor blaasorkest, geschreven door Jacob de Haan, is geschikt voor vele gelegenheden.

Bist du bei mir schrieb Johann Sebastian Bach für seine zweite Frau Anna Magdalena. Die Melodie passt vorzüglich zum Text eines unbekannten Dichters, der besagt, dass selbst der Tod keinen Schrecken mehr birgt, solange nur der geliebte Mensch da ist. Jacob de Haan schuf aus der beliebten, besinnlichen Melodie eine gefühlvolle Bearbeitung für Blasorchester.

En 1721, Jean-Sébastien Bach épouse en secondes noces Anna Magdalena Wilcken (1701-1760). Il lui dédie l’air Bist du bei mir BWV 508. Le texte a été écrit par un poète anonyme. La notoriété de cet air reste inégalable par la sublime tendresse de la mélodie qui évolue en parfaite harmonie avec un texte puissant dans lequel le poète nous livre une belle vision de l’amour : tant que l’être aimé est auprès de nous, même la mort est douce. Jacob de Haan a réalisé ce superbe arrangement pour Fanfare.

La notoriet di questa aria è ineguagliabile per la sua tenerezza che si evolve in perfetta armonia con un testo potente nel quale il poeta ci regala una bella visione dell’amore. The clock strikes twelve, there is no turning back. Ghosts are whispering, yelling, screaming... Fortunately it is almost one oclock, so we can leave this creepy placequickly.

Part 3: The Swinging Galleon [with illustrations]
What a huge pirate ship! Each time you swing back and forth, you will feel that weird feeling in your stomach. When you are thrown completely into the top you will have afantastic view over the park, but you can not enjoy it for long. Before you know the ship swings back the other way.

Part 4: The Fairy Tale Ride [with illustrations]
After all those exciting and spectacular rides and attractions,it is time for a peaceful tour in The Fairy Tale Ride. Surrounded by a fairytale setting, you will discover fable figures, talking animals and colorful designs. Such a beauty and tranquility. Having had this experience, we are ready again for thebig rides in the park!

Part 5: The Bumper Cars [with illustrations]
Now its time to crawl behind the wheel of the Bumper Cars! Shall we all chase the conductor?! Before you know you are hit by another visitor or you will bumpagainst someone else. In this tough ride you can prove yourself as a real driver, or perhaps as a really bad one.

Part 6: The Roller Coaster [with illustrations]
The largest, fastest and scariest ride in the park ... we shoulddefinitely do the Roller Coaster! All together in the train, the over-the-shoulder restraints are lowering... be ready to ride. The train leaves the station and is heading for the big lift hill. It will be very scary when the train reaches the topand the train will be plunged down the first drop! Loops, corkscrews and other spectacular coaster elements will follow... Before you know it, the ride of your life is over. Shall we ride it again?!

Part 7: Leaving the Park [withanimation]
Unfortunately everything comes to an end. This day in the theme park is over, but we have a lot new experiences to talk about! The memories of all the funny and spectacular rides will come up when we walk through the park to theexit. Just one look over the shoulder, the amusement park figures are waving at us. Wat een groot piratenschip! Elke keer wanneer je heenen weer schommelt, voel je dat rare gevoel in je buik. Wanneer je helemaal in de top geslingerd bent heb je een fantastisch uitzicht over het pretpark, maar je kunt er niet lang van genieten. Voor je het weet zwaait het schip weerde andere kant op.

Deel 4: 'The Fairy Tale Ride' [met illustraties]
Na al die spannende en spectaculaire attracties is het tijd voor een rustig ritje in 'The Fairy Tale Ride'. Omgeven door een sprookjesachtige.

And now for something completely different! Who but William Himes would think of deconstructing and the reconstructing the birthday song into this amazingly creative overture? And, who else could do it so well? The cognitive and the affective domains are both in for a treat as you prepare this intriguing new work for performance. Be sure to hear the CD demo and look closely at the score. There are some amazing things going on here.Unexpected!

Dit werk is geschreven in opdracht van de Palatine Concert Band uit Palatine in Illinois (VS), ter gelegenheid van het vijftigjarig bestaan in 2005. Zoals de titel al suggereert, is de muziek gebaseerd op een verborgen thema, datin veel subtiele verschijningen opduikt. Om de mijlpaal voor het orkest kracht bij te zetten creëerde de componist een vrolijke, feestelijke klank, ge nspireerd op een zeer bekende melodie. (De identiteit daarvan mag echter niet wordenprijsgegeven omdat zelfs de titel onder copyright valt. Laten we gewoon zeggen dat het een lied is dat vaak wordt gezongen bij de viering van een verjaardag.)

Wer außer William Himes käme schon auf die verrückte Idee, das bekannte Lied Happy Birthday to You vollkommen auseinander zu nehmen und dann zu einer erstaunlich kreativen Ouvertüre neu zusammenzusetzen? Und das hört sich dann sogar richtig toll an! Schon das Einstudieren dieser überraschenden Ouvertüre macht einen Riesenspaß, der sich dann mit Sicherheit auch aufs Publikum überträgt.

The word ‘tsunami’ is of Japanese origin. When you look it up in a dictionary, you will find that it means ‘a great sea wave produced by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption’.
A megatsunami is the superlative of this awesome expressionof power that nature can create, and has catastrophic consequences.

When Carl Wittrock completed this composition not many such big earth movements had occurred, but since then we have become all too familiar with the disastrousconsequences which a tsunami may have.
On the 26th of December 2004 a heavy seaquake took place near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Tidal waves 10 meters in height ravaged the coastal regions of many countries for miles around. The tsunamitook the lives of thousands of people and destroyed many villages and towns.

There are more areas which run the risk of being struck by a tsunami, such as the island of La Palma, one of the Canary Islands. This island is based on oceaniccrust at a fracture zone and as such is one of nature’s time bombs. The consequences of a natural calamity like a megatsunami are immense.
In the case of La Palma, the tidal wave will move in the direction of South America, where it may reach 50km inland, destroying everything on its way.

In his composition Wittrock describes an ordinary day which will have an unexpected ending.
Right from the beginning there seems to be something in the air, the music creating an oppressiveatmosphere of impending disaster.
Themes are interrupted, broken off suddenly, followed by silence, suggesting the calm before the storm.
Suddenly a short climax (glissandi in the trombone part) indicates the seaquake, and the megatsunami isa fact. Hereafter follows a turbulent passage symbolising the huge rolling waves.
After nature’s force has spent itself, resignation sets in and the composition ends with a majestic ode to nature.

Het woord tsunami is afkomstig uit het Japans. Het woordenboek geeft als betekenis: een vloedgolf als gevolg van een onderzeese aardbeving. Een megatsunami is de overtreffende trap van deze vorm van natuurgeweld en heeft catastrofale gevolgen.

Toen Carl Wittrock deze compositie voltooide waren er nog niet veel voorbeelden van dergelijke grote bevingen, maar inmiddels weten we maar al te goed welke desastreuze gevolgen een tsunami kan veroorzaken.
Op 26 december 2004 vond ereen zware beving plaats in de zee nabij het Indonesische eiland Sumatra. Vloedgolven van wel 10 meter hoog teisterden de kuststreken van menig land in de verre omtrek. De tsunami eiste duizenden mensenlevens en verwoestte vele dorpen ensteden.

Er zijn meer gebieden waar sprake is van een directe dreiging, zoals op het eiland La Palma, één van de Canarische eilanden. Dit eiland ligt op een breukvlak en is daarmee een tijdbom van de natuur. Bij een calamiteit als eenmegatsunami zijn de gevolgen niet te overzien.
In het geval van La Palma begeeft de vloedgolf van enkele honderden meters zich richting Zuid Amerika met alle gevolgen van dien. Tot ongeveer 50 kilometer landinwaarts heeft de megatsunami eenallesverwoestende werking.

In de compositie schetst Wittrock een gewone dag die ongewoon zal aflopen. Al vanaf het begin hangt er iets in de lucht en is er sprake van een dreigende, beklemmende sfeer.
Themas worden onderbroken doorplotselinge afbrekingen en stiltes. Opeens is daar de korte climax (glissandi in trombones) die de beving symboliseert en de megatsunami is een feit.
Een onrustig gedeelte vangt aan, daarmee de rollende, voortstuwende golven symboliserend. Na hetnatuurgeweld is er berusting en The Power of the Megatsunami wordt afgesloten met een majestueuze ode aan de natuur.

This chart is from the I REMEMBER BILL - a tribute to Bill Evans CD arranged and conducted by Don Sebesky! All of these incredible pieces require a mature band, soloists and woodwind doublers. Although these charts are not for the faint-of-heart, they are well worth the time and effort to perform. Jacob de Haan has produced this beautiful arrangement for brass band, which is suitable for many occasions.

It is my hope that this arrangement will be equally satisfying for the young band with ample rehearsal time or for the more mature band that wants a holiday favorite they can perform with limited rehearsal. The piece is presented first in a lush chorale format with the use of extended jazz harmonies. Special care should be given to balancing and tuning the inner voices for the most pleasant sound. After the lush opening on the famous refrain the arrangement moves to the bridge in an up-tempo swing. In this section the percussion is written to imitate a drum set, but if a set is available it may be preferable to use it in order to get the right feel. Following the bridge is another statement of the refrain followed by a hymn-style section by the reeds with jazz interjections by the brass straight out of the famous Perry Como rendition. This is followed by a D.S. to the bridge, one more refrain and then a short coda It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this arrangement.
