Snow Suite is the soundtrack to childhood’s winter adventures. Finally, after the storm, children and adults alike fall into the powdery snow creating charming and delightful Snow Angels.Performance NotesMost students are adept at pizzicato by the grade 1 orchestra level, and this piece provides the opportunity to review pizzicato technique for good tone. Recommended pizzicato technique includes the thick part of the fingertip over the fingerboard, producing tone with depth and allowing the resonance to create a rich orchestra sound. The detaché bowing is truly detached in Snowstorm with contrasting legato bow strokes in Snow Angels.For schools that encourage writing across the curriculum, teachers may encourage students to write a short imaginative story about the snow themes in this music. Heroes Among Us by Gary Fagan is an original overture-style work for string orchestra that was inspired by the many people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure many school children who could not go to school received at least two hot meals each day throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. School bus drivers and cafeteria workers put in long hours to prepare meals and deliver them to students who otherwise may have gone hungry during the week. While teachers, nurses, doctors, etc. received accolades during the months when schools were out of session, many adults stepped in to take care of other necessities to ensure the well-being of the students they served. This composition is based on the life of the German cavalry general Hans Michael Elias von Obentraut (1574-1625), who was known for his nerve, loyalty and courage. The figure Van Obentraut is closely connected to the town of Seelze, where he died a heroic death and where a monument was erected in his honor. The work consists of four movements in which various aspects of this historical figure are featured. What is extra special about this work is the fact that its firs movement (Hymn for a Hero) had been made available as an easy version for flexible band. This makes it possible for a youth of beginner band to play along with a band of adults or advanced players. This hymn can also be played as a separate piece.
