Though not without opportunities for displays of virtuosity, this work is not a concerto. In fact, Percussion Perspectives I is the first movement of a three-movement suite for wind orchestra which features percussion, although it stands on its own as a concert piece. However, unlike many percussion pieces, which tend to be lightweight in style, I have tried to provide a serious repertoire piece which happens to contain prominent parts for percussion instruments. When composing the piece I reversed my usual process of writing the music and then adding percussion parts to provide extra colour and reinforcement of rhythmic ideas. In this composition the ideas were conceived first for percussion and then translated into melody and harmony by the other instruments. In face there are several places in the score where this process is transparent, with the percussion expounding the ideas before they are taken up by the wind instruments. The leading roles are taken by timpani and side drum with a significant contribution from glockenspiel and xylophone. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) completed his Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor in 1803, not long after writing the famous letter to his brothers, the Heiligenstadt Testament, in which he lamented his increasing deafness. He gave the first performance of the piece, as soloist, on April 5 in a public benefit concert at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The opening melody in the first movement bears striking similarity to the first theme heard in Mozart's 24th piano concerto. As a whole, the piece provides an essential link between the Mozartean charm of the two earlier concertos and the more idiosyncratic work found in his middle period. Festival March by Victor Herbert was written for the Pittsburgh Symphony and first performed under Herbert’s direction in Chicago on Dec. 9, 1901 celebrating the 12th anniversary of Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Also known as the Auditorium Festival March, he included it many times for programs of a festival nature. The main theme Auld Lang Syne, a famous Scottish folk song, is incorporated many times along with brass fanfares, interludes and march melodies. This band arrangement is very similar to the original orchestral composition. The missing string parts, the addition of the saxophone section and other band instruments, editing of the superimposed triplets against sixteenth notes, to one or the other, and articulations suitable for the band, were major challenges. The style of early twentieth-century American music is captured here. This arrangement will give band musicians access to a fine piece of music that could only be appreciated by orchestra musicians up to now. Although suitable for many occasions, this piece is a great way to begin or end a December holiday concert.  Notes to the ConductorVictor Herbert’s music can be interpreted in a romantic style, which is the conductor’s responsibility to read in nuance and musicality. The beginning and other triple-tonguing sections of this piece have a March of the Toys quality to it.  The interludes and Auld Lang Syne sections are legato and musical. The March sections can also be shaped musically.About the ComposerVictor Herbert was born in Ireland in 1861 and raised in Germany. When he moved to America in 1886, he joined the Metropolitan Opera as principal cellist and eventually composed many works including forty-three operettas on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I, including Naughty Marietta and Babes in Toyland. Victor Herbert conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1898 to 1904 and then was the conductor of his own Victor Herbert Orchestra. He formed ASCAP with a group of composers in 1914 and was the director until his death in 1924. I Love the 207 was composed in February 2010 for a commission by Osumi Symphonic Band in Kyoto. It was first performed on 25 April 2010 by Osumi Symphonic Band, conducted by Masanori Ozaki. This piece begins with an introduction to present the instruments, followed by a light scherzo. The title is an affectionate reference to the commuter rail 207 series of the West Japan Railway Company. When the band started their activity, the 207 series trains began running through the fields next to the building where they practice. The composer hopes that the trains continue to run and bring smiles to people’s faces.

The title is an affectionate reference to the commuter rail 207 series of the West Japan Railway Company. When the band started their activity, the 207 series trains began running through the fields next to the building where they practice. The composer hopes that the trains continue to run and bring smiles to people’s faces.

Tre Volti (Three Faces) has been commissioned by the renowned ââ¬ÅNew Trombone Collectiveââ¬Â, exclusively existing of top-trombonists from the Dutch symphony orchestras. The world première was given by the commissioners and took place in ââ¬ÅDe Doelenââ¬Â in Rotterdam on april 16th 2011 - during the ââ¬ÅSlide Factoryââ¬Â - European Trombone Festival.The composer aimed to illustrate 3 different aspects of the instrument in as many movements. Effetti e Tecniche (Effects and Techniques) displays a large amount of specific spectacular and acrobatic possibilities and also various colors and sounds by using different mutes. It contains many ââ¬Åglissandiââ¬Â as well as clusters with semi tones andquarter tones, all being ââ¬Åtypicalââ¬Â for the trombone indeed. The Lamento Lirico (Lyrical Lamento) combines the rather serious and noble voice of the trombone with an aspect which not automatically is connected to that instrument: the melodical character. The overall atmosphere of this movement is somewhat sad and strained and refers to the many beautiful but rather dark passages in the orchestral and opera literature where the trombone section as such is used ...The final movement is called Sonata Antica (Antique Sonata) and is directly inspired by two ââ¬Åsonatasââ¬Â for 3 and 4 trombones by Daniel Speer (1636 - 1707). It illustrates the ââ¬Åhistoricalââ¬Â dimension of the trombone: indeed it was the only brass instrument being able to play chromatically - many centuries before all other brass instruments - thanks to the unique slide system which even during the Middle Ages was applicable already. The antiphonal position, the dialoguing motives and the ââ¬Åneo-early-baroqueââ¬Â idiom really pay homage to Daniel Speer: he composed a certain number of pieces for brass instruments indeed and the composer used thematic material from his Sonatas in d and a in various ways, thus concluding this varied composition in a festive way.

Der dritte Satz - SONATA ANTICA - wurde unmittelbar von zwei der bekanntesten Sonaten vonDaniel Speer (1636-1701) inspiriert. Tre Volti (Trois Visages) est une commande du prestigieux New Trombone Collective, composé des meilleurs trombonistes des orchestres symphoniques néerlandais. La première mondiale, assurée par la formation dédicataire, a eu lieu le 16 avril 2011 au Doelen de Rotterdam dans le cadre du ââ¬ÅSlide Factoryââ¬Â, le festival européen consacré aux trombones.Le compositeur souhaitait illustrer trois aspects de lââ¬â¢instrument en trois mouvements. Richard Strauss (1864-1949) originally wrote this work for solo piano and orchestra under the title Scherzo in D minor in 1886 for conductor and pianist Hans von Bülow, a large influence on Strauss' career. Von Bülow, however, consider the work a complicated piece of nonsense and wanted nothing to do it. Discouraged, Strauss set the work aside until 1889, when he met Scottish pianist Eugen d'Albert, who liked it while also suggesting some changes. With a new title, Burleske, and a dedication to d'Albert, the work was premiered on June 21st, 1890 in Eisenach at the Tonkünstlerfest with d'Albert at the piano and Strauss conducting. Despite this, Strauss remained convinced that the work lacked merit and refused to have the work published until 1894, although it eventually became one of his favorite works. Strauss never gave the work an opus number, but many consider it to be Op. 11, which is actually assigned to his Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat.
