Grieg’s suite from ‘Sigurd Jorsalfar’ remains one of his most popular works and here, arranged by Wil van der Beek, we are pleased to be able to offer a version for Concert Band. This one will be a sure-fire hit with any fans of classical music.

In 1872 - Twee jaar voor hij Peer Gynt gegon te werken - componeerde Grieg de muziek bij het toneelstuk Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd de kruisvaarder) van Bjørnsterne Bjørnsons. Enkele jaren later voegde hij de drie belangrijksteorkestgedeelten samen tot een gelijknamige concertsuite. In The King's Hall is overigens de orkestversie van een inn 1867 door Grieg geschreven gavotte voor viool en piano. Wil van der Beek schreef de versie voor armonieorkest.

In der Königshalle erweckt die Atmosphäre der historischen Szenerie, in der sich das mittelalterliche Drama Sigurd Jorsalfar abspielt, zum Leben. In der Bühnenmusik wird mit diesem Stück der zweite Akt eingeleitet, in dem die beiden Brüder zum Wortgefecht um den Königsthron in der Königshalle antreten. Wil van der Beek schuf eine authentische, überzeugende Bearbeitung für Blasorchester von Edvard Griegs Komposition.

Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson influença profondément la littérature norvégienne du XIXème siècle. En 1872, Grieg écrivit une musique de scène pour la nouvelle pièce de thé tre de son ami, intitulée Sigurd Jorsalfar (‘‘Sigurd, le croisé’’). La musique comporte huit pièces, dont deux chorals. En 1892, Grieg remaniait trois de ces pièces qu’il faisait publier un an après, sous forme de suite séparée, Op. 56. La première pièce, Prélude : dans le hall du roi (In The King’sHall) développe un thème solennel qui chemine vers des mélodies plus intimistes auxquelles les bois apportent une coloration nostalgique.

Four Album Leaves, Op. 28 is a set of pieces for piano solo composed by Edvard Grieg. The set was first published in 1878 in Leipzig by C.F. Peters. The Album Leaves were composed over the span of almost fifteen years. As such, they present a fascinating cross-section of Grieg's pianistic and compositional development. They are arranged in chronological order as follows: Allegro con moto (1864), Allegretto espressivo (1874), Vivace (1876), and Andantino serioso (1878).

Having realized some years ago that due to Grieg’s way of writing for the piano, that they would fit wonderfully on two guitars, I began with this set, and then moved onto more of his works, finally transcribing his complete set of 10 books of Lyric Pieces (66 pieces in all), all of which are available as separate publications at Les Productions D’Oz. I hope you enjoy playing them as much as I, and my duet partner Ann, do.

Originally written for piano, Grieg later scored his Holberg Suite for orchestra. Geoffrey Brand has done a masterful job of setting two movements of the suite - the Sarabande and Gavotte - for wind band. Born in Bergen, Norway, into a family of Scottish descent, Edvard Grieg showed a talent for music early and at the age of 10 had piano lessons from his mother. In 1849 he went to study at Leipzig Conservatoire before moving to Copenhagen where he met Riokaard Nordaak, a young Norwegian composer who was immersed in Norwegian nationalism and greatly influence Grieg who felt his future was as a musician dedicated to romantic nationalism. Holberg Suite, originally for piano, was written in 1884 in response to a commission to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Ludvig Holberg, a Norwegian dramatist and satirist. A year later, Grieg arranged 5 movements for string orchestra. Sarabande and Gavotte are intended to be played segue but can, if desired, be performed separately. The music expresses Grieg and his native Norway in a manner which justifies his declaration I am not an exponent of Scandinavian music but of Norwegian..

The piano concerto in a minor stands out in Edvard Grieg's oeuvre. Besides this famous concerto, he composed only a few other large orchestral works. Because of its popularity even in Grieg's lifetime, it was often performed, not least by the composer himself. So it is not surprising that Grieg made many changes to the score up to 1907. But at the same time, the concerto's size, form and substance remained completely unaltered. Interventions in the piano part basically involved subtleties of nuance, and only a very few places in the music text were altered. The situation was different with the orchestration. Here Grieg was keen to experiment and kept filing away at the orchestra sound right up to the last. Melodies were moved to other instruments, accompanying string chords were reconstructed, and above all the list of scored instruments was changed. The main source of the Urtext edition by Ernst-Gunter Heinemann is the new edition of the score originally published in 1907 by C. F. Peters, thus several years after the first edition of 1872. Taken into account in the present edition are the changes that Grieg made up to the time of his death. Piano reduction and fingering by Einar Steen-Nokleberg.
