Fantasy-Variations on Two Themes (2017) for organ was written for Heinrich Christensen in celebration of his significant 2017 birthday. The musical material for the work comprises two different themes. The first is a short melody by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). (It was a sketch originally intended for inclusion in, but ultimately left out of, Nielsen's late organ work 29 Little Preludes.) This theme represents Heinrich's native Denmark. The second theme is the American folk-gospel hymn Angel Band. This theme represents Heinrich's adopted American homeland. It serves also as a remembrance of our dear mutual friend Harry Lyn Huff (1952-2016), for whom the tune was a particular favorite. Both these themes are developed freely in a set of alternating fantasy-variations. The opening variation begins with a dramatic pedal solo before quoting both themes. The second variation is a lyric setting based on the Nielsen melody. The third is a jubilant hornpipe on Angel Band. The fourth is an aria on a transformation of the Nielsen melody. The fifth is a gigue-toccata on Angel Band. The sixth is an atmospheric contemplation: lush chords in the manuals move slowly and hint at Angel Band while the Nielsen melody is heard for the first time in its complete original form on a high pedal stop. The seventh and final variation begins with a brief evocation of the harmonies of the late Daniel Pinkham (a mentor to both Heinrich and me) before going on to return dramatically and jubilantly to the opening music, bringing together both themes again in a bold conclusion. As an inexhaustible proponent of Beethoven's life and work, Franz Liszt (1811-1886) produced a number of arrangements and transcriptions in homage to the great composer. His FANTASIE ÜBER MOTIVEN AUS BEETHOVENS RUINEN VON ATHEN, S. 122 (FANTASY ON BEETHOVEN'S RUINS OF ATHENS) for piano and orchestra is one of three existing versions, all of which he dedicated to Nikolay Rubinstein. The work on which the piece is based, incidental music for a play by August von Kotzebue, was written in 1811 in Pest, Hungary for the dedication of a new theater. Capriccio Italien is based on Italian folk songs and was composed by Tchaikovsky in 1880. The work was inspired by his trip to Rome which he took with his brother Modest. Arranger/composer David Bobrowitz has utilized most of the capriccio’s themes in order to create a Fantasy that captures the essence of Tchaikovsky’s music. Although the music has been technically reduced for grade 3 players, it still retains all the fire and energy of the masterwork. The Fantasy utilizes a somewhat different ending then the original, but it will all sound like vintage sounds Tchaikovsky. The Shakers were a sect who, in the 18th Century, sailed out from England to America. Right into the late 19th Century, the numerous songs of this community were handed down orally, until they were written down in various volumes of song collections. Philip Sparke’s fantasy for wind band is based on a selection of these beautiful, captivatingly simple songs. Synthesizing Western compositional techniques with Chinese musical elements, Fantasy for Piano shows the fusion of different cultures and the diversity of today's music. There are two main melodic ideas: one uses a whole-tone scale, somewhat related to the folk music of Ningxia, my home province in northwest China; the other, with its shifting major and minor thirds, shows a connection toWestern tonal music. The piece is roughly in three-part form: fast-slow-fast. Although the last part is derived from the first, each of the three has its own characteristics, while the entire piece is unified by the two melodic ideas described above. Fantasy for Piano is available on the VMM (Vienna Modern Masters) label recorded by Jeffrey Jacob.
