This piece was commissioned by the Dutch province of Groningen for the celebrations commemorating the liberation festivities in 1987. In the composition, the dream of a world without war is symbolized. It is the first composition in a series in which Jacob de Haan combines concert music with pop music in a style, which reminds one of film music. Synthesizing Western compositional techniques with Chinese musical elements, Fantasy for Piano shows the fusion of different cultures and the diversity of today's music. There are two main melodic ideas: one uses a whole-tone scale, somewhat related to the folk music of Ningxia, my home province in northwest China; the other, with its shifting major and minor thirds, shows a connection toWestern tonal music. The piece is roughly in three-part form: fast-slow-fast. Although the last part is derived from the first, each of the three has its own characteristics, while the entire piece is unified by the two melodic ideas described above. Fantasy for Piano is available on the VMM (Vienna Modern Masters) label recorded by Jeffrey Jacob.

Fantasy and Fugue in D minor BWV 905 is one of Bach's least known works originally written for keyboard. The Fantasy is of moderate tempo and relatively short. The top two lines have many suspensions while the bottom line (optionally performed on Tuba) is scalelike. The Fugue is more lengthy with the top lines trading off short repeated passages while the bass line winds around alternating scales and octave jumps.Mr. Sauer's excellent arrangement is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 6 minutes in length. When I was approached to compose a work for brassband and church organ I already envisioned the concept I would use. It would indeed literally become a work for brassband and organ. Without the traditional solos, the organ would form an addition to the brassband orchestration as would the brassband provide an extra register for the organ. In short a homogeneous entity. The most important reason for doing this is quite simple. Since this work can only be performed in a church and because of the specific acoustics of the church, the brassband would sound in al its tone colour like an organ. By using certain registers of the organ and combining these with the brassband a wonderfulsound palette can be created. The use of complementary or contrasting tone quality is also possible. The primary theme of this composition is based on these three methods of “colouring”. As far as structure is concerned this work consists of two parts. slow fast. It is built on a number of motifs in which some behave like a consecutive canon. In the fast movement the primary motif develops into a fugue-like section. The canon and fugato are techniques frequently used in classical and contemporary organ literature. The liberal use of structure and motif has lead to the title. “Fantasy for Brassband and Organ”. Jan Bosveld zegt:Toen mij gevraagd werd een compositie te maken voor brassband en kerkorgel stond mij direct een duidelijk concept voor ogen. Het zou inderdaad een werk gaan worden voor brassband en orgel in de letterlijke zin vanhet woord. Geen traditioneel solowerk maar het orgel als uitbreiding van de brassbandbezetting en de brassband als een extra register van het orgel. Kortom, een homogeen geheel. De belangrijkste reden hiervoor is simpel. Het werkkan eigenlijk alleen in een kerk worden uitgevoerd en een brassband, in een kerk met zijn specifieke akoestiek, klinkt in al zijn kleurschakeringen als een orgel. Door het orgel in een bepaalde registratie te laten klinken kan,in combinatie met de brassband, een prachtige mengklank tot stand worden gebracht. Ook kan worden gekozen voor een klank die aanvullend is of contrasterend. Deze drie manieren van “kleuren” is het belangrijkste thema van de compositie.Wat vorm betreft bestaat het werk uit twee delen. langzaam snel. Het is opgebouwd uit een aantal motieven waarvan sommige zich gedragen als een snel opvolgende canon. In het snelle deel wordt het belangrijkste motief uitgebreidtot een fugato-achtig gedeelte. De canon en het fugato zijn technieken die zowel in de klassieke, als de hedendaagse orgelliteratuur veel worden gebruikt. To this day, Eugene Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. His Fantasy for bassoon and piano is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bozza won prizes for violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opera-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes, whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1945, Bozza's Fantasy for bassoon and piano is a virtuosic work, addressing advanced features including complex rhythms, chromaticism, a wide range and articulation. As music educationalist, Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions, his works reveal melodic fluency, elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities..

The Kreutzer Sonata was originally dedicated not to Rudolphe Kreutzer (who never performed it) but to George Bridgetower, a famed 18th-century Afro-European concert violinist. In an early draft, Beethoven jokingly labeled the piece in starkly racialized terms: Sonata Mulattica composed for the mulatto Brischdauer, big wild mulatto composer.Beethoven and Bridgetower performed the premiere, which was by all accounts a success, and even featuring some improvised embellishment by the violinist. While celebrating afterwards, the two quarreled about what Beethoven construed as Bridgetower's insult of a female acquaintance; the composer then revoked the original dedication, adding Kreutzer's name instead. The work gained acclaim, while Bridgetower's career languished; he eventually died in poverty.Bridgetower has been the subject of considerable research and speculation, most notably in poet Rita Dove's book, Sonata Mulattica. From our 21st-century vantage, considering Bridgetower's unique circumstance, we can only see him as an ambiguous figure who, in embodying difference, provoked inspiration, fantasy, desire, anger and, finally, erasure.My piece is a collection of imaginings about George Bridgetower. It is not programmatic, but it takes on an episodic character, assembled from contrasting fragments. The dance rhythms, recurring figures and gestural contours are intended to feature the embodied expertise and expressivity of the performers, who at times must access liminal sounds and execute complex synchronies. I am grateful to Jenny Koh and Shai Wosner for involving me in their beautiful, virtuosic music-making.
