Leoš Janácek (1854-1928) wrote a large portion of his most distinctive music late in life, following the success of a revised version of his opera Jenufa in 1916. His extensive research of the national folklore had a great impact on his work as a composer. Inspired by a military band performance in a park, the Sinfonietta opens with a military-style fanfare for brass and percussion. It received its commission from a Czech gymnastics association to celebrate the Eighth National Sokol Rally which took place in Prague in the summer of 1926. The Czech Philharmonic gave the first performance on June 26th of that year under the direction of Vaclav Talich. The inner movements provide contrasting melodic and rhythmic material, characterized by rhythmic shifts, abrupt mood changes, and fragments of folk dance. The final movement climbs through a long, intensifying sequence to reprise the opening music, now taken up by the full orchestra. This courageous and forceful melody uses frequent doubling of sections to add strength and volume to the developing string orchestra. Fearless legends are heard in the determined theme, punctuated with heavy staccato accompaniments, meant to be played marcato style on the string. Set in E minor, the piece allows cello players to explore extended F# finger patterns as upper strings get to practice a few high-3 sharp accidentals. The character of the piece is found in the rising and falling dynamics that depict the inevitable defeats, but also glory of victory of battle. After a brief respite in a lyrical middle section, the steady march returns in the low strings, bringing the ensemble back to a triumphant conclusion.

In 2016, Presser published her successful audition training book, 6 Weeks to Finals, and she is a much sought after coach for audition candidates across the country, as well as a frequent Master Class clinician at major schools including Boston University and Peabody Conservatory.JEFFERY ZOOK has been a member of the Detroit Symphony since1992. His formal musical studies began at Interlochen and continued at University of Michigan and the Royal Academy of Music in London. His teachers have included William Bennett and Trevor Wye. A prize winner in the NFA Young Artists Competition, Mr. Zook made his solo debut with the Detroit Symphony as a senior in high school, and has since performed all the Vivaldi concerti with them. He has recorded extensively for MusicMinus One and performed frequently at NFA conventions, including the concerto gala in 2017. Mr. Zook has served on the faculty at University of Michigan and Oakland University. In 2002 Zook and Sharon Sparrow founded the Detroit Flute Connection, a series of masterclasses for flutists.
