Illuminating Journey is composed to celebrate Maestro Carl St. Clair's 25th Anniversary season with Pacific Symphony. Maestro St. Clair is one of the few conductors who has dedicated his time to new music and support for living composers. I first encountered Maestro St. Clair in 2004 when I was one of the finalists for the Young Composers Competition. After I won that competition, I had an opportunity to work with Maestro St. Clair on the piece that he commissioned for the Pacific Symphony in 2005. That's the beginning of the journey of our friendship. Illuminating Journey is inspired by Maestro St. Clair's personality and the music he loved. The piece is mainly based on the pitch material from Maestro St. Clair's name CARL which can be translated as C = C, A = A, R = Re, and L = La. That pitch material already has the character of Illuminating sound for the open 5th and octave. The piece also incorporates some musical references that have some meaning for Maestro St. Clair, such as the hopefulness of the melodic intervals from West Side Story, There's a Place for Us, composed by Leonard Bernstein, who was also Maestro St. Clair's mentor. Illuminating Journey starts with the rhythmic motion of the pitch C and moves on to create a set of pitches. The note C functions as a center for the endless energy of this piece and creates a triumphant ending. I would personally like to thank Maestro St. Clair for his dedication on my music and his friendship throughout the past 10 years. The work with Maestro St. Clair and the Pacific Symphony was an early step in my career as a composer. I often mentioned that I may not be able to come this far without that part of my life. Thank you very much, Maestro St. Clair and the Pacific Symphony. Let's celebrate our Illuminating Journey together.

The music releases pieces of vivid sound one after another into the performance space. It is a baby's march - right foot, left foot, step by step. Innocent, audaciously powerful and immature, the toddler walks planting each step firmly on the ground. Based on a constant beat, the music is deformed with digital and pop expressions. Cute and pop contents and textures are produced and consumed on a massive scale every day. I find beauty in such artificial textures around us. Originally Cornfield Rock was written by Jacob de Haan as a version for male choir. It was based on a text by William Shakespeare on a melody of Thomas Morley (It was a lover and his lass). The original melody however was abandoned completely and in its place Jacob de Haan created a new one in rock style. The title refers to the text: That o’re the green corne fields did passe.

Jeder kennt ,,The Large Glass, the Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even (272,5 X 175,8 cm), an dem Marcel Duchamp acht Jahre lang, von 1915 bis 1923, arbeitete und es doch unvollendet liess. Dazu veroffentlichte er 1934 ,,The Green Box, in der sich eine Menge Texte, Berechnungen, Fotos und Skizzen als Vorstudien zum ,,Grossen Glas befinden. Obwohl Andre Breton von einer zynischen und mechanistischen Interpretation der Liebe sprechen zu konnen glaubte, ist neben der beeindruckenden Genauigkeit der verschiedenen konzeptionellen Ideen eher das Dunkle, das nicht direkt Deutbare, das eigentlich Entscheidende an dieser Arbeit. Da gibt es die beiden Glaser - das obere die Braut, das untere die Junggesellen -, neun ,,Malic Moulds, eine ,,Chocolate Grinder, einen ,,Milky Way, ,,Oculist Witnesses (mit funf konzentrisch angeordneten Kreisen), neun ,,Shots etc. Auch in meiner Komposition gibt es Oben und Unten sowie deren Zusammentreffen (,,Path of Illuminating Gas) bis hin zu zwei gegenschlagenden Beckentellern, eine Zweiteilung in Metall-Instrumente und andere, ,,neun Taktabtastungen, ,,lautlose Fenster usw. Vor allem aber ist der Text, den der Sopran singt, wunderbar anschmiegsam. Er braucht keine ,,Deutung, erfullt in jedem Augenblick des Auftauchens seinen Sinn; kann also musikalisch auseinandergezogen, in einen ubergeordnet determinierten Verlauf eingepasst werden.
