The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart's unfinished work is by the celebrated opera composer Niccolo Jommelli. The Missa pro defunctis was composed in 1756, during Jommelli's time as Kapellmeister at the court of the Wurttemberg Duke Carl Eugen, on the occasion of the death of the Dowager Duchess Maria Augusta. The work went on to enjoy wide circulation and numerous further performances. Jommelli composed it in the Neapolitan style, with orchestral forces of just strings and basso continuo. The simple but effective choral movements are partly contrapuntal in the stile antico, and partly with solo/tutti alternation and numerous suspended dissonances, whilst in the solo parts the opera composer can be recognized. This beautiful sounding Missa pro defunctis is now published for the first time in a critical edition. A sacrilege or a stroke of genius? The composer and music director Gottlob Benedict Bierey (1772-1840) orchestrated the first movement of the famous Moonlight Sonata' by Beethoven (transposed to C minor) and added a four-part choral movement to it, which he underlaid with the text of the Kyrie from the Latin mass. The result is as astounding as it is harmonious! Versions for choir and organ, and choir and piano (both like the original version in C sharp minor) are also available (Carus 28.009/45 and in 4.025/00).

José MaurÃÂcio Nunes Garcia was a well-respected 18th-century Brazilian composer. This ââ¬ÅGloriaââ¬Â comes from a Christmas Eve Mass he wrote in 1811. There has recently been a resurgence of interest in his work, as the world awakens to classical composers outside of Western Europe. This delightful setting of the Liturgical Latin from the Mass is an excellent choice for both church and school choirs.

Gounod's Messe a la memoire de Jeanne d'Arc was composed in 1887 for a festive mass in Reims to commemorate the arrival of the national heroine in the city on the occasion of the coronation of Charles VII in 1429. Performed a cappella or only accompanied by an organ, vast stretches of the work are in an archaic style in the tradition of Palestrina. The royal procession into the cathedral is conveyed in the splendid Prelude at the beginning, which was performed at the premiere by eight trumpets, three trombones, and organ. In the performance material, the present edition also offers a version of the movement for piano and organ. For the Offertoire, Gounod composed a cantilena for violin and organ (or piano), which is also included in the edition, as a Vision of Jeanne d'Arc. Our source for the present edition of his Missa ad octo voces inaequales, Op. 65 is that issued in 1920 by the London firm of Bayley & Ferguson. This was not the work's first outing, however. In 1918, Bailey & Ferguson published a setting of this mass in English (Communion Service: Mass in C, for Eight Voices a Cappella, Op. 65, also published by Crescendo Music Publications), with movements ordered according to the Prayer Book. Perhaps to allow the work a larger audience, Henschel slightly modified the music to fit the Latin syllabification and reordered the movements, but essentially the work is as it was two years earlier.Our edition includes a full list of editorial changes and corrections. Also available is a version which omits the Credo, for churches where it is sung congregationally.

 This French impressionistic and contemplative work, “In paradisum†(May the angels lead you into paradise ), was added to the original Requiem by Fauré in 1893. The original 1888 version was heard in Paris in a funeral Mass at La Madeleine with Fauré playing the organ. The text refers to the miracle of eternal rest (“aeternam habeas requiemâ€). In this edition for treble voices, listeners can hear the continuous fluttering of angel’s wings in the keyboard against the beautifully melodic, mostly unison vocal lines sung by the choir. The rich D major harmonies are developed toward the end of both verses and, finally, in the ending invitation to have eternal rest.
