The discovery of a lost source to AntonÃn Dvorák's â??Nocturneâ? in B major op. 40 provides new insights into the genesis of the composition and the composer's intended final form of this lyrical little piece for string orchestra. The musical material of what was later to be named â??Nocturneâ? was initially elaborated in the String Quartet in E minor; subsequently it was used in the original version of the String Quintet in G major as its second movement. However Dvorák then extracted it again, expanding and editing it afresh. The final result was the â??Nocturneâ? for string orchestra (two violins, viola, violoncello, double bass). The first edition was published by Bote and Bock in 1883.The authorized second copy of the work that had served as a template for the first printing was discovered by the editor Jonáš Hájek in a privately owned collection. This enabled him to resolve the several ambiguities caused by the existence of multiple versions and to unveil the authentic â??Nocturneâ?.

Three Little Nocturnes was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2005. Commissioned by the Cikada Ensemble, with support from NOMUS, and written for Frode Haltli and the Cikada String Quartet. Programme Note: In the first nocturne a slow, falling music emerges on an irregular pulse, filled with high harmonics in the strings. The second nocturne is fast and unrestful music, with a lot of passion, which in a moment runs into a glimpse of a tango. In this movement the accordion is employed in its traditional fashion, using the chord bass, with its “oom-pah-pah†standard chords. The third nocturne is again slow, indeed very slow, and it has German tempo and expression markings. Thepiece ends with a lullaby in the accordion, played with an unusual technique, imitating the string portato. This is accompanied by high harmonics in the strings, while the first violin slowly and softly plays a melody from the second nocturne. Hans Abrahamsen.

Though alternately titled "Premier Nocturne," this work for solo piano in D major is actually Georges Bizet's 2nd NOCTURNE, the first having been written more than a decade earlier, and in the key of F. Though Chopin is certainly most well-known as a composer of nocturnes in the 19th century, this work by Bizet is also counted among the best written in that era.

This Nocturne can be performed by Oboe, or B flat Clarinet or Violin, with either harp or piano. Three separate solo parts are included in the book.[bg_collapse view=link color=#4a4949 icon=arrow expand_text=Show More collapse_text=Show Less ]The three Nocturnes by Bochsa are all dedicated ‘To his friend Charles Garnier’ and were published in Paris. They are short dramatic pieces for harp and oboe, exploiting operatic themes and styles, offering each instrument at least one elaborate variation. The title page of the earlier publication suggests flute, clarinet or violin as possible alternatives to the oboe, but then fails to mention the flute on the headings of the instrumental parts. The other two Nocturnes show that the flute is to play the violin version, if no oboe is available, while the clarinet plays the oboe version. With this new edition of Nocturne Op. 50 No. 3, set by C.M.M. and F.H. Nex, there are separate parts for Oboe, Clarinet in Bb and Violin, and the Harp part can alternatively be played on the Piano. Some mystery surrounds the numbering of the collection of Nocturnes Op. 50, whose original title page states ‘Two Nocturnes’ in every case, followed by the numbers 1, 2 and 3![/bg_collapse]Edited by Rachel MallochFormer Spartan Press Cat. “Contemporary Italian-French composer, Armando Ghidoni brings together influences of both Italy and France in his music. Also, as an expert on jazz, the harmonies and rhythms of the composer's works reflect a huge diversity, Nocturne and Sicilienne for Clarinet and Piano or Harp accompaniment being no exception. Ghidoni is significant within the contemporary French music school and his works are regularly chosen as set pieces for leading national and international competitions. Nocturne and Sicilienne reflects Ghidoni's mastery of a range of instruments. With a typical performance lasting about five minutes, Nocturne and Sicilienne is a truly exquisite addition to the modern Clarinet repertoire. &rdquo.
