Ilkka Kuusisto's raucous and technically somewhat challenging suite for clarinet and piano Kissalan Aapelin soitteita (Aapeli of Kissala plays the Clarinet) is a musical portrait gallery of the Seven Brothers by playwright Aleksis Kivi. They all get musical pictures played by Aapeli, a character also appearing in the play. Musical motives are derived from the characteristics of the main persons, ie. the movement Tuomas is in slow tempo, as if portraying the trustworthiness of stable Tuomas. Aapo's Menuetto may refer to the characters abilities to tell stories. Simeoni wrestles with the Devil, as he does in the book with both alcohol and in his religious beliefs. Eero, the youngest of the brothers is portrayed in a fast polka. The suite was commissioned by Tapio Lotjonen for specifically for piccolo clarinet. Nikki Giovanni's descriptive text is masterfully captured through the writing of David Hiser, new to the Carl Fischer choral catalog. While not terribly challenging, the vocal part is somewhat whimsical and terribly fun to sing! Text and melody coupled with the wonderfully playful piano accompaniment make this piece a dynamite addition to any concert or festival.

One of a collection of works set to texts by e.e. cummings for the Los Angeles Chamber singers composed by Ian Krouse, who writes: The structural 'bubble' created by fragmenting and repeating individual words - or not - enablesthe composer to control the metabolism of the text - at times lingering at times racing. I particularly enjoy this aspect of text setting, and hope that it creates a somewhat spontaneous, improvisatory impression.

The Night Will Shine as Day was commissioned by the Bedford Junior High Treble Choir under the direction of Hannah Ware in 2022. Composed with a spirit of perseverance and hopefulness, the text (paraphrased from Psalm 139) shares a message to have faith even during the darkest days, and a reminder that a light will always shine through the darkness if we have the courage to see it.Featuring a flowing piano accompaniment and lyrical (optional) horn solo, this piece was written with an equal relationship between the major mode and the minor mode (as demonstrated by the alternating piano harmonies, neither chord revealing a clear tonality.) This tonal obscurity represents the relationship between dark and light: a somewhat codependent relationship through which the melody struggles to find stability. As the understated chorus reveals and repeats the core message of the text, the melody gains confidence in its role among struggle between light and dark. The piece concludes with a final triumph of light over dark, this time with harmonic clarity and hopefulness for the future.  .

This piece, previously considered lost since its first performance, was described thus in reviews of that concert: ... The composition is modern and the humour appears to be that of the composer himself. Michel Nicolay, who has extraordinary technical skill and fabulous breathing control, leads this difficult work by the Munich composer Hartmann and is supported by the accompaniment of seven wind instruments. The bassoon provides rather a humorous bass line in the first section, with the whole work tending somewhat towards the burlesque. The second section contains some really astonishing passages..

Asleep in the Deep, refers to those who have drowned while at sea. Patti Drennan's adaptation of Arthur Lamb's text is a love story about a sailor, his sweetheart, and the fate they meet while in a tragic storm at sea. Rhythmic and somewhat stormy throughout, this is an excellent and appropriate selection for developing tenor-bass choirs of all sizes.
