It's a dynamic duo of fabulous '50s holiday hits! Choral singers will enjoy the traditional harmonies and laid-back swing of this mini-medley that clocks in at just over three minutes. The doo-wop falsetto pops near the end provide a nifty nod to nostalgia. For even more fun, add some showmanship with Santa hats, jingle bells, and riser choreography. SoundPax includes parts for a standard rhythm section.

Richard Proulx, who in recent years has given us more wonderful arrangements than original pieces, here breaks the pattern with a setting of Psalm 148. And, it is classic Proulx! The sturdy macaronic refrain for choir and assembly, leads to lilting triple meter verses for soprano then tenor, a choral verse in duple rhythm, and a return to the triple feel of the earlier, for the final verse utilizing both soloists and choir. Typically, the organ part is something organists will enjoy playing.

This Johnny Mercer, Harry Warren tune was premiered by jazz legend Louis Armstrong and nominated for an Academy Award in 1938. The lighted-hearted, innocently flirtatious song has since become an iconic standard. Jay's fantastic arrangement includes the opening verse, some easy scat singing, and plenty of jazz sonorities throughout. Add the rhythm section SoundPax for even more style.

In Jubilate Deo Kim André Arnesen goes back to the music to which he was introduced from a very early age as a chorister at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway. There he sang regularly in concerts and services, and many of his favourite works come from the repertoire for choir and organ. Although the composer has not written a lot for those forces, they are perfect for the character andemotions portrayed in this piece. The joy and exuberance of the music reflects the Latin text (the opening two verses of Psalm 100: “Rejoice in God, all the earthâ€, and verses from Psalm 57: “I will sing and make musicâ€), with dancing, syncopated rhythms and a more solemn, soothing middle section. A real showstopper, made even more effective by the optional percussion (tambourine and hand drum – an extracted percussion part is included in the vocal score).

A delightful arrangement of a classic Advent text from the 9th-century, this gently flowing piece begins with a statement of the melody coupled by a simple arpeggiated accompaniment. The undulating rhythm is broken mid-piece by a more chordal harmonic movement that reflects the reverence and magnitude of the text, “At your great name, O Jesus, now all knees must bend, all hearts must bow.†It ends as it began with a strong restatement of the opening accompaniment.

This edition for Holy Thursday was written to reflect African American idioms. “Pange lingua†has rhythm and motion, yet acknowledges the solemn tone of the liturgical moment. As the ritual action moves from procession to adoration and repose, the setting moves to “Tantum ergo.†Though it, too, should have motion, it is more reflective of this most solemn moment: the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The closing “Amen†ending on a perfect fifth recalls the style of ancient chant and organum.   .
