The ultimate full score medley of beautiful melodies from the Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke (1997, dir. Hayao Miyazaki), arranged for concert band in the series: New Sounds in Brass (NSB). Grade 3; Duration: approx.8'50; Composed by Joe Hisaishi; Arranged by Takashi Hoshide. Arranger Takashi Hoshide says, I have selected beautiful melodies from the soundtrack of 'Princess Mononoke' (1997, directed by Hayao Miyazaki) and arranged them into a medley. What can be said about these songs as a whole is that they combine a grand continental scale with the delicacy that reflects Japanese emotions. Since there are no upbeat songs in this selection, I had to work hard on the arrangement, but this allowed for creating contrasts and transitions between each scene in the performance. 'Ashitaka Sekki (English title: The Legend of Ashitaka)' - 'Sekki' means a story that is not recorded but passed down orally. In this anime, this can be considered a sub-main theme. The song starts with a feeling that the story is about to begin and, once the theme kicks in, aim for a grand performance to convey its scale. 'Encounter' - This is the music that plays during the scene where the protagonist Ashitaka meets San. Interestingly, the motif of the main theme 'Princess Mononoke' is used in this melody. Here, let's pursue the shifts in the timbre of individual phrases, creating a beautiful and aesthetic soundscape. 'Princess Mononoke' - This is the main title of the anime. The melody line is carried by horns and trumpets.

This work is based on the story of the soldier and the princess from the film Cinema Paradiso. Long ago a poor soldier fell in love with a beautiful princess. He had nothing to offer her, but managed to meet her and declare his love. The princess was very taken by his emotional plea, and told him that if he were to wait under her balcony for one hundred days and nights, she would be his. Waiting patiently, the soldier endured all manner of torment from weather, wildlife and starvation. Finally on the next-to-last night, the soldier took up his chair and disappeared. The music evokes the atmosphere of the poignant story, and the work is divided into three different movements. Duration: 5:00.

The Sleeping Beauty ballet in 3 acts, which tells the story of conflicting forces of good and evil, incorporates various fairy-tale characters from the Brothers Grimm and French fairy tales. Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) longest ballet, the work was met with a favorable response following the January 15th, 1890, premiere at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, but the composer would not live to see the work become the mainstay of the ballet repertoire that it has enjoyed for over one hundred years. The popular Waltz, No. 6 from Act I, takes place as the introduction to Princess Aurora as a dance on her sixteenth birthday. In a Persian Market was composed in 1920 by English composer Albert W. Ketelby. It is a short tone poem that describes the hustle and bustle taking place at a busy, exotic Persian bazaar. Camel herders, beggars, a princess, jugglers, snake charmers and a myriad of others fill the musical scenes. The princess and her caravan eventually pass by and all is back to normal. Tohru Takahashi's arrangement perfectly conveys the sights, sounds and smells of a Persian market.

In the Mystic Land of Egypt.

Who does not know the famous Te Deum Prelude by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1634-1704)? This French composer studied both painting and composition in Italy. Returning to France, he took up the post of music master to the dauphin. He collaborated with Molière, working for the Théatre Francais until 1685. He then returned to court and was music director to the Princesse de Guise, composition teacher to the Duke d’Orleans and wrote music for the dauphin’s chapel. His Te Deum, of which the Prelude has become well known (particularly in Europe, where it is used as the Eurovision signature tune) is one of many pieces he wrote for important state and religious occasions.

Perseus is the famous Greek hero who saved Princess Andromeda,as she was about to be sacrificed to the sea monster Kraken. SatoshiYagisawa was inspired by the story of Perseus, which was madefamous in the 1980’s movie Clash of the Titans. The music is full ofdrama and it is easy to imagine the dark underworld as monstersbattle to survive. The members of your band can sing the choirparts, adding to the fun of this epic tale!
