There are two known manuscript sources for the present edition of this sinfonia avanti l'opera. In the Dean and Chapter Library of Durham Cathedral it appears as the twelfth, and last, piece in a collection of late seventeenth-century Italian instrumental music. No composer is given and identification was only possible following the discovery, in 1993, of a concordant source in the Biblioteca Estense, Modena, where the work appears as the sinfonia to Perti's opera L'Inganno scoperto per Vendetta, first performed in Venice as part of the 1690/1 season.It is sometimes hard to ascertain the original functional purpose behind many of the trumpet works written by composers of the Bolognese school as it would appear that some were used as sonate da chiesa, to celebrate mass in the basilica of San Petronio, Bologna, whilst also serving as operatic sinfonie. To confuse the issue further, there are several instances of composers 'borrowing' each other's works: for example, it has recently been discovered that the Torelli trumpet sinfonia a 4 catalogued as G4 in Giegling was used as the overture to Perti's opera Nerone fatto Cesare (1693). So far as the present edition is concerned, however, stylistic considerations would appear to confirm that the work is indeed by Perti and that it was originally conceived as the overture to L'Inganno scoperto per Vendetta. A couple of clues hint at a secular raison d'etre: the Durham source is marked Serenatto (presumably a corruption of serenata, a term often used in lieu of sinfonia) and the last movement of the Modena source is marked Menuet, a term more often associated with sonate da camera than with works of ecclesiastical provenance.Both the Modena and Durham sources for the present edition are virtually note-perfect and occasional inaccuracies were easily corrected by comparing the sources with each other and with the part-books in Durham. Whilst the Modena source lacks the second violin part in the outer movements it contains fuller dynamic markings and tempi indications than the Durham source and these have been followed in the present edition with no editorial additions. Notation has been modernised and, in the piano reduction edition, right-hand arpeggio-figurations rendered more pianistic. Parts are provided for trumpet in D and B flat. I am grateful to the Dean and Chapter of Durham and to the Biblioteca Estense, Modena, for providing microfilm of the manuscripts. It started with him tinkering on his toy piano as a child and grew to him being accepted to the High School of Performing Arts in New York City. Roger's falsetto has opened many doors for him. He was a member of the All City High School Choir. Hearing his vocal abilities, he was recruited by the internationally known Boys Choir of Harlem. His musical talents garnered him a position playing keys on two Broadway plays in New York, The Color Purple and Memphis. When you witness the musicianship of M. Roger Holland II you will recognize the influences of some of the people he has worked with like Walter J. Turnbull, James Williams, Joseph Joubert, and Bettye Forbes. When you hear his writing, you may notice the stylings of Stevie Wonder. There is no denying the influences of Marvin Gaye, Peabo Bryson, and Luther Vandross when it comes to his vocals. The gospel inflections are representative of Richard Smallwood, Thomas Whitfield, and Kirk Franklin. The compositional techniques of classical composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the arranging styles of Negro Spirituals by Roland Carter, Jester Hairston, and Moses Hogan are prominent as well. Leading the Gospel Choir of Union Theological Seminary fueled Roger's fire and drew him into seminary. His passion for music led him on a spiritual journey from Westminster Choir College to Manhattan School of Music where he received his graduate degree and ultimately the very same Union Theological Seminary where he received a Master of Divinity degree. Roger is the Minister of Worship & Christian Arts at Calvary Baptist Church in Jamaica, NY, where weekly he ushers in the Holy Spirit through praise and worship. He also serves as Liturgical Consultant for the Office of Black Ministry in the Archdiocese of New York. In late September or early October 1821 Schubert and his close friend, Franz von Schober, vacationed in the countryside of Lower Austria. Their first stopover was at Ochsenburg Castle, which belonged to the Bishop of St. Pölten (a close relative of Schober’s), after which they moved on to St. Pölten itself. Roughly a year earlier, two stage works by Schubert had been performed in Vienna: the one-act singspiel Die Zwillingsbrüder and the melodrama Die Zauberharfe. The librettos were both written by the seasoned Viennese playwright Georg von Hofmann, who blamed the press for the indifferent reception the two works were given by the audience. Schubert and Schober now decided, it would seem, to write a grand romantic opera uninfluenced by the workaday world of the theatre and beholden solely to their own ideas of what an opera should be.Not until 24 June 1854 was the opera finally performed in Weimar, under the baton of Franz Liszt. It only achieved success, however, in an arrangement by Johann Nepomuk Fuchs that was staged on many German and Austrian stages in 1881–2, allegedly with brilliant acclaim.
