Brass Quintet No. 1 was composed with great pleasure for the American Brass Quintet during the summer of 2000. It is cast in three movements. The work opens with a series of dramatic annunciatory gestures that serve to set into relief the faster, more angular, occasionally skittish heart of the movement. Both the beginning and the end of this core are framed by a long-held E-flat: two pillars that support and elevate the central part of the movement. The slow and quiet second movement can be viewed as a kind of lens or prism through which the music passes and changes. Pitches, then harmonies, are gradually brought into focus, then refracted - splintering off into more individual phrases (I was thinking here of the way light is split and bent by the prisms in our kitchen window). The end of the movement is characterized by a turn of the lens in the opposite direction as the music gradually blurs, then fades. The final movement begins with a bit of imitative counterpoint. The character of the music is initially unabashed and proud, but is quickly foiled by increasing speed - a frantic kind of stretto! A more playful narrative follows, though; this occasionally studded with sharp, percussive chords. A brief choral-like section provides textural contrast before the recapitulation, and the familiar E-flat pillar from movement one ends the work.

Ãrpád Balázs (*1937) composed the first version of Rhapsody for Hungarian cimbalom and concert band in 2001; in 2021, on the encouragement by a Japanese marimba player he arranged the solo part for marimba, and therefore the opportunities for the work to beplayed have significantly widened. The Rhapsody follows the one-movement structure created by Franz Liszt. The beginning solo section of the cimbalom (or marimba) returns before the coda as a pillar of the form. The composition, which can be divided into five sections, develops and works with a Lydian tetrachordal motif (G-A-B-C sharp) in different characters, stretching the span of music from a simple, children's song-like appearance to an obstinate ritual dance. In conclusion, the Rhapsody is a passionately emotional lyric orchestral poem rich in colours and characters, which has a place on the repertoire of every concert band playing quality music.

In 1845 Franz Liszt embarked on a project to compose an Italian opera based on Lord Byron’s tragedy, Sardanapalus (1821). It was central to his ambition to attain status as a major European composer, with premieres variously planned for Milan, Vienna, Paris and London. But he abandoned it half way through, and the music he completed has lain silently for 170 years. Liszt’s difficulty in obtaining a libretto meant that composition only began in April 1850. He completed virtually all the music for Act 1 in an annotated piano-vocal score of 111 pages, contained within his N4 music ‘sketch book’. The unnamed librettist was an Italian poet and political prisoner, seemingly living under house arrest, and a close acquaintance of Cristina Belgiojoso. His libretto survives as underlay in the N4 sketchbook and has been critically reconstructed and translated. Sardanapalo is Liszt’s only mature opera. While he consistently referred to it in French, as Sardanapale, the published title of the Italian opera would almost certainly have used the Italian name, hence this forms the title of the first edition. There are three solo roles and a chorus of concubines. The manuscript was previously thought to be fragmentary and partially illegible, but it was finally deciphered to international acclaim in March 2017. Liszt’s score offers a richly melodic style, with elements from Bellini and Verdi alongside glimmers of Wagner and the symphonic poems ahead: a unique mixture of Italianate pastiche and mid-century harmonic innovation. It remains quintessentially Lisztian. The opera sets Byron’s tragedy about war and peace in ancient Assyria: the last King, effeminate in his tastes, is drawn to wine, concubines and feasts more than politics and war: his subjects find him dishonourable (a ‘man queen’) and military rebels seek to overthrow him, but are pardoned, for the King rejects the ‘deceit of glory’ built on others’ suffering: this leads only to a larger uprising, the Euphrates floods its banks, destroying the castle’s main defensive wall, and defeat is inevitable: the King sends his family away and orders that he be burned alive with his lover, amid scents and spices in a grand inferno. As Byron put it: ‘not a mere pillar formed of cloud and flame, but a light to lessen ages.’ For his part, Liszt told a friend that his finale ‘will even aim to set fire to the entire audience!’ This critical edition includes a detailed study on the genesis of Liszt’s Sardanapalo in English, German, and Hungarian, the libretto in the original Italian as well as in English, German, and Hungarian translation, several facsimile pages of Liszt’s manuscript, and a detailed Critical Report.

Buzzing Polka, composed in 1993, is one of the earliest compositions by László Dubrovay (*1943) for concert band, which has become ahuge success due to use of special timbres and effects which had been unexploited in the genre earlier. Already the title tells thatclassical musical values and surprising moments of special brass instrument techniques can be both found in the work. Every second in the striking character piece is made interesting by the excellent balance between the pillar-like harmonies enriched by distant overtones and horizontal melody formation. Performing Buzzing Polka is a great opportunity for conveying the message and values of the music of the 20th and 21st centuries through the contrast between classical melodies and new ways of instrumentation.

A superb a cappella hymn setting of “In The Midst of New Dimensions,” arranged by Tom Trenney and featuring Julian Rush's evocative text, set to the NETTLETON tune. From its opening question - “Who will lead the pilgrim peoples wandering in their separate ways?” - this arrangement captivates, assuring listeners of divine guidance amid life's changes. With vivid imagery invoking the “God of rainbow, fiery pillar,” this piece beautifully portrays our journey, offering solace and reassurance. The harmonious blend of music and text creates an emotive, captivating choral experience that resonates long after the song ends.
