The Composer writes: 'In February 1987 I saw in the Tate Gallery in London a painting by the Victorian English painter John William Waterhouse. The painting kept haunting my memory, and as I at the same time planned to write a piece for solo Viola, my ideas for the music and the memory of the painting fused more and more. I decided, then, to let my piece borrow the title of Waterhouse's painting: The Lady Of Shalott. The picture of a mad-like, pale, and perhaps singing woman alone in a boat without sculls, which calmly slips out from the rush growth of the river is an illustration for the ending of Alfred Tennyson's poem by the same title, which again plaits into the old English legends about King Arthur. My piece tries to meander - like the river at Camelot - among these sources.' As suggested above the piece was originally written for Viola solo. This version for String Quartet is from 1993.

Christmas is that wonderful time of the year when we sing, come, thou long-expected Jesus even though we know he has already come, and 'joy to the world' even though we know the world is not yet completely joyful. ôThese are the opening words of this thoughtful and expressive cantata-a beautiful combination of the meditative, as well as the joyful, feelings that remembering the events of Christmas brings. The congregation is asked to join in the singing of familiar carols, and the choir is given the opportunity to sing beautifully crafted, but never difficult, new music for the season. Performance time: 25-30 minutes. Flute 1 and 2, B-flat Clarinet, Horn in F, Trumpet 1, 2 and 3, Trombone 1, 2 and 3, Timpani, Percussion, Opt. Harp, Violin 1 and 2, Viola, Cello, Contrabass.

Elvis Costello was inspired to create this song sequence for string quartet and voice after discovering that a Veronese academic had been replying to letters addressed to â??Juliet Capulet.â? The delicate and personal nature of the correspondence inspired a wonderful and poignant set of songs, written, arranged and originally performed by Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet. Released in 1993, the album was met with critical acclaim for its creative mix of rock and classical style influences and intelligent sense of melody. Hal Leonard is proud to publish this 30th Anniversary Edition of the work, edited by Brodsky Quartet members Jacqueline Thomas and Paul Cassidy.

Here is a setting of a Tagore text set for cello and treble voices. It was composed specifically for a Conspirare program called “The Singing Guitar,†the Grammy Award-nominated album featuring three works for guitar quartets and voices. This was conceived as an introductory invocation which would reflect aspects of unfulfilled purpose and a longing for intimacy with the Divine. It will gracefully fill the same role in your concerts.

Chen Yi describes the cheery interplay of HAPPY TUNE as one instrument playing a lively melody, while the other plays a vivid rhythmic pattern as accompaniment. The pair of instruments imitates primitive Chinese folk song singing, as well as the traditional wind instrument sheng, a mouth pipe organ. One of the composer’s favorite themes to develop for different textures, HAPPY TUNE is a variant from Chen Yi’s Three Bagatelles from China West, both versions appearing in several scorings.Composed to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, HAPPY TUNE was originally written as a violin/viola duet for Kim Kashkashian and Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu, and premiered at the festival on June 16, 2018. The flute/cello adaptation was created in 2021.I fondly remember being invited by the GLCMF (directed by Prof. James Tocco) to be the dual Stone Composers-in-Residence with my husband Zhou Long, along with the Stone Composer Fellow Nicholas Omiccioli in 2011. We had a dozen of our chamber works performed excellently by the outstanding chamber ensembles and musicians during the week, meeting enthusiastic audiences and supporters of new music in various venues at the festival. The experience was truly inspiring, and I created HAPPY TUNE to honor the GLCMF, with hopes to carry on the high spirit in our new music society. In this duet, when one instrument plays a lively melody, the other plays a vivid rhythmic pattern in the accompaniment. The pair of string instruments imitates the sound of primitive Chinese folk song singing, as well as the Chinese traditional wind instrument sheng, a mouth pipe organ.

'Brice Catherin, a cellist and a composer exploring the notion of the one-man-band concept, commissioned this work; this composition was subsequently the result of our collaboration. My aim has been to create a work where the cellist produces sounds using his full body: his hands (employing a variety of extended techniques on the Cello and external objects), his feet, his mouth (singing and playing the harmonica and flexible tube) and even his face on one occasion to muffle the strings. There are two central themes in the work: virtuosity and theatre, both strong, frequent features of my compositional oeuvre. After several meetings and experimentation with Brice, I chose asetup that enhances the musical scope without visually cluttering the stage. I am also using a rather unusual scordatura that not only changes the timbre of the instrument itself, but also helps create unique soundscapes that blend together with the sounds from the spring drums, the human voice (whistling, groans and other effects), a singing bowl, a harmonica and a flexible tube among others. The work is entitled Emmelia and there are two reasons for this: Emmelia derives from the prefix en (in) and the noun melos (harmony), thus meaning in harmony. The composition is structured and developed in clearly defined sections (noisy, harmonious, distorted, etc.), based on information revealed by a spectral analysis of an F1 spectrum on the cello (tuned a fifth below low C), played and recorded using a variety of attacks and triggering objects and methods. Emmelia is also the name of my baby daughter, who has been my constant inspiration since she was born.' - Evis Sammoutis.
