The collection of 130 studies published in two volumes was compiled with the aim in mind to meet the demands of trombone instruction from the highest classes of the music schools to the Academy of Music. lt was selected from those 'traditional' studies which played a decisive role in trombone playing and instruction at the turn of the century and have become the most frequently performed studies since then. However old-fashioned these studies may seem, they belong to the best ones with regard to safe, smooth technique and the elaboration of a nice sound and will definitely serve their purÂpose in the future as well. On compiling the volumes, I have attempted to observe not only asequence according to grade of difficulty but the variety of characters as well. I am convinced that these studies are both useful and, when performed sufficiently colorfully, may contribute to overcoming the monotony of technical exercises. The articulation sings and markings of dynamics, which often differ from the original, try to meet this aim.I had already used this collection of studies before it was printed. 1 had to realize soon that the technical level of the first pieces was too high to assure a smooth transition from the trombone tutors written for beginners. As a result, I found it necessary to start the first volume with a shortened and facilitated version of some studies. Since these pieces in question have been changed considerably, a * beside the composer's name refers to the fact in each case that they are arrangements.I recommend my work to my past, present and future pupilsPál Makovecz.

Aulos to a certain degree continues Orbán's easy piano pieces for children, which he composed for Ãgnes Lakos's piano tutor and which Editio Musica Budapest published in a separate volume entitled Enchanted Forest in 2011 (Z. 14742). Yet on this occasion the composer took on something which was both significantly different and more than his earlier pieces for children. On the one hand, he did not compose for beginners but for more advanced students who have studied piano for at least three years. On the other, he did not set developing the technique of piano playing as an aim, rather a systematic presentation of different polyphonic genres and compositional procedures(imitation, fugue, stretto, inversion, augmentation and diminution, double counterpoint, latent polyphony, double and triple fugue, cantus firmus technique, etc.). Orbán introduces his students to the mysteries of polyphony in a direct and practical manner, and thus actually makes them familiar with the art of composition. The educational use of the series is significantly increased by the fact that before each piece the composer presents and clarifies with demonstrative illustrations the polyphonic procedure he introduces. Orbán's explanations are not text-book-like at all, but are deliberately personal and subjective, full of lessons and individual associations taken from his practice as a composer. They were written in the same spirit as the works themselves - while they perfectly fulfil their educational purpose they are equally individual, witty and inspired pieces of music that are a joy to play. Up to now, the Dutch composer and performer Karel van Steenhoven, founder member of the renowned Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet, has mainly written demanding concert literature for the recorder. Now he has added an easy work for beginners to the recorder repertoire: 'A Musical Journey' was composed for two young recorder pupils and leads through different stylistic eras of European music history. Van Steenhoven was inspired by an old tune from Ancient Greek which moves from classical antiquity via the Middle Ages and Baroque era to jazz, swing and modern music in 14 short character pieces. In a playful and humorous way, children are thus introduced to the different styles of music. An excursion of educational value without missing out on fun and pleasure.

György Orbán (born 1947) is among the most frequently performed contemporary Hungarian composers. His style incorporates a characteristic mix of classical, modern, cinematic, and jazz elements. In addition, he claims he ''loves splashing about in tonality,'' which makes his works accessible to the wider public. Owing to his humor and imagination, he finds an easy path to children, as demonstrated by the popularity of his piano works specifically intended for beginners. He composed close to 70 short children s pieces for Ãgnes Lakos s four-volume Friendly Piano Tutor (Z. 14749-14756), later published separately as Enchanted Forest (Z. 14742). The New Bell includes 19 piano piecesfor beginners among others, we encounter a baby elephant now and again (perhaps paying a visit from Debussy s Children s Corner?) and we hear the awful clamor of a most outgoing granny s alarm clock as well as the solemn tolling of a new church-bell. The pieces are arranged in order of difficulty and even include a few items for three hands which may be played by a pupil with the teacher or another student.

This collection gives young saxophonists a glimpse of more than half a millennium of music. Regardless of their level of difficulty, the works follow one another in chronological order, providing both beginners and more advanced students with ample choice. Almost every piece in the volume was originally a two-part work, thus they can equally well be performed on two saxophones.
