Aurora Dances was commissioned by the Hong Kong-based Winter Band Festival, and consists of three movements, to be played without a break. ‘Aurora Borealis’ opens with florid woodwind figures and highlights different sections of the band in turn. The second movement ‘Aurora Australis’ leads to a sombre chorale, which builds to a full-band climax. The finale ‘Aurora Dances’ is characterised by rhythmic, dance-like themes. A central section features a contrasting legato melody, but this doesn’t dispel the energetic feel of the opening, which returns to close the work.

Aurora Eclipsed was inspired by the solar eclipse of 2017.  During a solar eclipse, a beautiful and fascinating aurora sometimes forms around the moon creating an eerie outline. This “ring of fire†is actually the sun’s outer edges being revealed for the human eye. An aggressive composition younger students will enjoy playing over and over again.I wrote Aurora Eclipsed while looking outside at 2017’s solar eclipse. I find space and celestial bodies so fascinating. To think of how small we are compared to the scale of even just the moon is impressive.During a solar eclipse, a beautiful and fascinating aurora sometimes forms around the moon creating an eerie outline. This “ring of fire†is actually the sun’s outer edges being revealed for the human eye. About the work:Unlike most of my young-band pieces, Aurora Eclipsed begins at its peak tempo. The rhythmic pattern in m. 2 is repeated throughout the piece and is used in the melody in order to help facilitate the teaching of eighth-note patterns. The melodic pattern changes slightly at m. 25, while remaining just as repetitious as the previous pattern, giving everyone ample opportunity for exposure. At m. 25 the directions call for euphonium and bassoon only. This is merely a color choice and can easily be used with trombones to fill the need or to help strengthen your students' playing. The use of sfz is not used very much in this level of music, but I thought with the addition of the accents that it would be a great opportunity to teach this colorful effect.

Aurora Borealis for solo cello evokes the mystery and drama of the northern lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. The Aurora Borealis was out. It hung and moved with majesty in folds like an infinite traveler upstage in an infinite theater. In colors of rose and lavender and purple it moved and pulsed against the night, and the frost-sharpened stars shone through it. What a thing to see!... ― John Steinbeck Level of difficulty - music school student to professional Solo Violoncello Duration: 6' Composed: 2020 Published by: Todd Mason Aurora Borealis for Solo cello (Youtube):.

Composer's Notes When I met Kelsey Rose in Oxford in St. Stephen’s House chapel over the summer of 2017, we had both just attended a very moving candlelit concert by Westminster Williamson Voices, featuring my setting of “Tenebrae lumini.†I was delighted to be asked to write a piece for compline in Princeton University Chapel, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Anglican/Episcopal chaplaincy at Princeton University. “Aurora†is the result of that meeting. Composing by commission often throws up some interesting challenges. The piece had to fit both as an accompanying piece to the plainchant of compline, whilst simultaneously being a celebratory anthem. I was instantly drawn back to the poetry and hymns of St. Ambrose of Milan, particularly “Aurora iam spargit polum.†Fragments of chant (both real and imagined) are used to create the powerful imagery of the descending golden light of dawn. The piece reaches its climax with the plea for the despair of night to “vanish,†which it then does, leaving the sopranos alone on a high G.

Aurora was the Greek goddess of dawn. Through the ages dawn has had a significant spiritual meaning - daylight conquering the ominous darkness of the night. This exciting work by Thomas Doss uses musical imagery to reflect the meaning of dawn by cultures throughout the world. The emphasis lies on oriental sounds - symbolizing the daily aurora in the Far East.

A superior chart in every way! Patrick Williams' Aurora is a samba at 120 BPM that features optional horns in F, and full instrumentation with two auxiliary percussion parts. There is plenty of solo space for a variety of instruments and a huge shout chorus. Check this chart out! (2:00).

This entrancing work musically captures the dazzling dancing northern lights which have fascinated mankind for centuries. The opening theme is presented in varying styles, characterizing the many forms in which the lights appear, from patchy clouds to streaming arches. Trills and rolls symbolize the rippling formations, and the chromatic rising musical lines reflect the soaring rays which light the sky with an eerie glow. Bright brass fanfares depict the magnificent shades of green and pink. Exciting music for both audiences and performers, Aurora Borealis is a surefire winner!
