Albastum is a proud, stately concert march written in classic A-B-A form. It opens with a festive fanfare in the brass section, followed by a lively, bright theme, symbolising the joy of playing music together at each weekly rehearsal. Following a melodious trio, a counter theme develops and the march comes to an exciting close with a reprise of the original theme.

Albastum is een majestueuze concertmars. Stijn Roels schreef hem in de klassieke A-B-A-vorm. De vreugde die muzikanten aan musiceren beleven, komt bijzonder goed tot uitdrukking. Orkestrale wisselingen tussen de bas en de discantin het eerste deel laten de bijzondere klankkleuren van de verschillenden instrumentgroepen goed zien. Een melodieus trio en de reprise van deel A ronden de mars af. Echt zo’n mars waaraan iedereen plezier beleeft!

In diesem stolzen, majestätischen Konzertmarsch, der in einer klassischen A-B-A-Form geschrieben ist, kommt die Freude aller Musiker an ihrem Spiel zum Ausdruck. Orchestrale Wechsel zwischen Bass und Diskant im ersten Teil heben die besonderen Klangfarben der einzelnen Instrumentengruppen sehr schön hervor. Ein melodiöses Trio und die Reprise von Teil A runden diesen Marsch ab, der dem gesamten Fanfareorchester und Publikum Freude bringen wird!

Albastum est une majestueuse marche de concert, conforme la structure classique A-B-A. Elle débute avec une fanfare festive, suivie d’un changement de couleurs obtenu par l’alternance entre les cuivres graves, les saxophones et les euphoniums. La partie B - un trio mélodieux - a été confiée aux clarinettes. Un charmant contre-chant plane au-dessus du thème principal. Il s’ensuit une reprise de la partie initiale (partie A) avec, en prime, un contre-chant taillé sur mesure pour les fl tes et les clarinettes.

This musical fantasy depicts the history of the Dutch fortified town of Elburg. The work begins with an atmospheric medieval picture of the Convent of St Agnes, the nunnery that was built in the first half of the 15th century. We hear the sound of the convent bells together with an upward motif, which will reappear later in the work. Next, the rest of Elburg is featured, including the fortress - from which the bells of the Sint-Nicolaaskerk (Saint Nicholas Church) are ringing. Then, cheerful sounds can be heard at the Vischpoort (Fish Gate), where a dancing group is performing a 16th century French folk dance (a branle des chevaux). We also hear old wagons rumbling over the town’scobble stones. Trade made this Hanseatic town a lively place. The repetitive upward motif first heard in the introduction now develops into a more distinct feature, reflecting the mercantile spirit of the town residents.Then follows the slow middle movement, in which the clock has been turned back to the time when Elburg was still lying on the Zuiderzee (which was a bay of the North Sea), and was struggling with floods. After the second St. Marcellus Flood (1362) and the water flood of 1367 it was decided that the town would be relocated. We now hear the theme of branle des chevaux in a minor key, followed by a death bell sounding in remembrance of the drowned citizens of the former town. Back in our own time, a slow, expressive theme in Baroque style mirrors Elburg’s tranquil places, such as the Feithenhof (Feithen Court) and the Weduwenhofje (Widow Court). Then the bustle returns with motifs from the introduction, followed by an attractive theme in which present-day Elburg is portrayed with its many tourists. Now, suddenly, there is an echo from the past, depicting the dramatic floods and wars that once plagued the town. This leads to the grand closing theme: branle des chevaux is heard for a final time from the perspective of the historic town centre.

Deze muzikale fantasie vertelt de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse vestingstad Elburg. Het werk begint met een middeleeuws sfeerbeeld vanuit het Agnietenklooster, het nonnenklooster dat in de eerste helft van de 15e eeuw werd gebouwd. We horen de kloosterklok samen met een opwaarts motief, dat ook later in het werk terugkomt. Vervolgens komt de rest van Elburg aan bod, inclusief de vesting - van waaruit de klokken van de Grote of Sint-Nicolaaskerk weergalmen. Dan klinken bij de Vischpoort de vrolijke geluiden van een dansgroep die daar een 16e-eeuwse Franse volksdans (branle des chevaux) uitvoert. Ook horen we oude karren over de kinderkopjes van de stad denderen. Dehandel maakt deze Hanzestad tot een levendige plaats. Het zich steeds herhalende opwaartse motief uit de inleiding krijgt hier een nadrukkelijker karakter en verbeeldt de handelsgeest van de stedelingen.Dan volgt het langzame middendeel, waarin de klok wordt teruggedraaid naar de tijd dat Elburg nog direct aan de Zuiderzee lag en te kampen had met overstromingen. Na de tweede Sint-Marcellusvloed (1362) en de watervloed van 1367 werd besloten dat de stad verplaatst zou worden. We horen het thema van de branle des chevaux in mineur, gevolgd door een doodsklok, die de verdronken inwoners van de voormalige stad herdenkt. Terug in onze eigen tijd verklankt een langzaam, expressief thema in barokke stijl de verstilde plekken in de stad, zoals het Feithenhof en het Weduwenhofje. Dan keert de levendigheid terug met motieven uit de inleiding, gevolgd door een aansprekend thema waarin het Elburg van nu met zijn vele toeristen doorklinkt. Plotseling is er dan nog even een echo uit het verleden: de dramatiek van de overstromingen en oorlogen die de stad ooit teisterden. Hieruit vloeit het grootse slotthema voort: de branle des chevaux is voor de laatste keer te horen vanuit het perspectief van de historische binnenstad.

This piece was commissioned by Oyama City Symphonic Wind Orchestra to commemorate their 30th Anniversary. The composer was inspired by Oyama City’s slogan, ‘water, green and earth’, to write this festive fanfare. Following a gentle opening a fanfareleads to a magnificent chorale. This turns into a quickly moving energetic section with irregular rhythm. This is a short but dramatic piece that will make a brilliant concert opener.

Een indrukwekkend en kleurrijk openingswerk waarvoor de componist zich heeft laten inspireren door de Japanse stad Oyama.

Beim Komponieren dieses Werkes ließ sich Satoshi Yagisawa von den Schlagwörtern Wasser“, grün“ und Erde“ aus dem Motto der auftraggebenden Stadt Oyama inspirieren. Mit einer sanften Einleitung, nach der die Fanfare zu einem prachtvollen Choral anschwillt, um dann ein kraftvolles, schnelles Thema hervorzubringen, bietet Fanfare - The Benefaction from Sky and Mother Earth alles, was es zu einer wirkungsvollen Konzerteröffnung braucht.

l’introduction, expressive et douce, succède une fanfare qui chemine vers l’exposition d’un magnifi que thème choral. La ligne mélodique qui suit est puissante et vive. Une oeuvre effi cace pour ouvrir un concert en finesse et en puissance.

Questo brano è stato commissionato dalla Oyama City Symphonic Wind Orchestra in Giappone, per celebrare il 30° anniversario di fondazione. Nello scrivere il brano, il compositore si è ispirato allo slogan di Oyama: acqua, verde e terra. L’introduzione è discreta ed è seguita da una fanfara che accompagna il brano ad un splendido corale. Il brano diventa poi più energico e veloce. Un brano breve, ma di grande impatto, tipico dello stile di Yagisawa.

As the title suggests, this work is a partita: it consists of a number of variations on a chorale melody. The partita has been popular for centuries, especially when it comes to organ music. Henk van Belcum, who is active in the choir world, chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer König as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare, the second variation follows, based on a canon by Pachelbel. Händel’s Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting, after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante. PartitaPiccola is an asset for church services and for concert platforms.

Die Partita, seit Jahrhunderten ein fester und beliebter Bestandteil der Orgelliteratur, besteht aus einer Anzahl Variationen zu einer Choralmelodie. Für seine Partita Piccola nahm sich Henk van Belcum die deutsche Hymne Wunderbarer König als Vorlage. Die Partita Piccola besteht aus vier Variationen und einer Choralbearbeitung, die auch einzeln für den Gottesdienst verwendet werden kann.Auf eine würdevolle Eröffnungsfanfare folgen neben der Choralbearbeitung Variationen zu einem Kanon Pachelbels und zu Händels Sarabande. Abgerundet wird das Werk schließlich durch eine festliche Courante. Die Partita Piccola ist eine Bereicherung für den Gottesdienst und dieKonzertbühne.

Musica Helvetica takes the form of a three-part concert work. The first part, Musica Prima, has a jazz flavour and is a brisk virtuoso opening. The following section, Musica Sacra, has a contrasting and beautiful main themcontaining extraordinarily colourful instrumentation. The final part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the amazing variety of scenery in Switzerland.

In het Zwitserse Wallberg wordt ieder jaar een concours voor harmonieorkesten en brassbands georganiseerd. Naast een hymne en een solowerk dienen alle orkesten een verplicht werk uit te voeren. Voor het concours van 2012 werd eenopdracht verstrekt aan Jan de Haan. De compositie kreeg Musica Helvetica als titel mee. Het gaat om een driedelig concertwerk waarvan de laatste twee delen onafgebroken in elkaar overgaan. Het eerste deel, Musica Prima,is een virtuoze en flitsende opening met hier en daar jazzy invloeden. In contrast daarmee staat het expressieve volgende deel, Musica Sacra, waarin het gedragen hoofdthema prachtig wordt uitgewerkt - de instrumentatieis hier buitengewoon kleurrijk. Het afsluitende deel, Musica Alpina, is ge nspireerd op het afwisselende landschap van Zwitserland. Het is grillig van structuur en vormt een waardige afsluiting van dit fraaie drieluik.

Im schweizerischen Wallberg wird jedes Jahr ein Wettbewerb für Blasorchester und Brass Bands ausgerichtet. Neben einer Hymne und einem Solowerk müssen alle Orchester ein Pfllichtstück spielen. Vor dem Wettbewerb im Jahr 2012 wurde der Auftrag zudiesem Pflichtstück an Jan de Haan vergeben. Die Komposition erhielt den Titel Musica Helvetica. Es handelt sich dabei um ein dreiteiliges Konzertwerk, dessen letzten zwei Teile direkt ineinander übergehen. Der erste Teil, Musica Prima,ist eine virtuose, flotte Eröffnung mit eingestreuten jazzigen Einflüssen. Einen Kontrast hierzu bildet der folgende Teil, Musica Sacra, worin das Hauptthema wunderschönausgearbeitet wird - die Instrumentierung ist hier außergewöhnlichfarbig. Der letzte Teil, Musica Alpina, ist inspiriert vom abwechslungsreichen Landschaftsbild der Schweiz. Mit seiner launigen Struktur bildet er einen würdigen Abschluss dieses schönen Triptychons.

Musica Helvetica est une pièce de concert en trois parties. La première, Musica Prima, évoque un brin de jazz et constitue un début vif et virtuose. Le thème de la section suivante, Musica Sacra, est instrumenté d’une façonremarquablement coloriée. Dans la dernière partie, Musica Alpina, le compositeur a trouvé son inspiration dans les paysages extraordinairement variés de Suisse.

Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. Thefinal part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.
