Musica Helvetica takes the form of a three-part concert work. The first part, Musica Prima, has a jazz flavour and is a brisk virtuoso opening. The following section, Musica Sacra, has a contrasting and beautiful main themcontaining extraordinarily colourful instrumentation. The final part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the amazing variety of scenery in Switzerland. Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a briskvirtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. Thefinal part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the greatvariety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.

This piece was commissioned by Oyama City Symphonic Wind Orchestra to commemorate their 30th Anniversary. The composer was inspired by Oyama City’s slogan, ‘water, green and earth’, to write this festive fanfare. Following a gentle opening a fanfare leads to a magnifi cent chorale. This turns into a quickly moving energetic section with irregular rhythm. This is a short but dramatic piece that will make a brilliant concert opener.

Hora Est! (Latin for ‘it is time!’) was composed to bid adieu to Sjoerd de Boer’s following forty years as conductor of the Chr. Fanfare Band, based in the town of Wjelsryp in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, this small phrase, hora est, is traditionally said upon awarding a university doctorate at graduation ceremonies. The composition was written with Sjoerd de Boer firmly in mind, mirroring various aspects of his life. The main motif of the work consists of three notes, forming his initials: S (Eb) D B. At a certain point, the music is interrupted by a thunderstorm and heavy rain (forever a bad omen: the debut for this work took place a day after such a deluge, but fortunately their open-air concert was met with clear blue skies.) The fanfare then plays an Italianesque march, with the motif of de Boer’s initials interwoven throughout. The work re-uses this motif twice towards the end of the piece as one might expect, by the saxophones to create a festive, driven and virtuosic atmosphere. Finally, the work comes to an end with the initials motif played across the ensemble in complete unison. The powerful closing chords symbolise a fond farewell to de Boer: a driven and extremely capable conductor whose musical mark on Concordia will be felt for years to come. Hora Est! is suitable as a contest piece and would be a definite highlight for any upcoming concert.

De Ruigewaard is a large polder (reclaimed land protected by dykes) in the Dutch province of Groningen. Shortly after the land was reclaimed around 1500, a settlement was established at the location of the current village of Grijpskerk. This was the source of inspiration for this concert work, together with a 13th-century Gregorian theme - the Dies Irae - which is used as a leitmotiv. After the introduction follow five variations, in randon order - however, each one of them carries us back to a striking moment in the history of Grijpskerk, home of the Excelsior Christian Music Association (CMV), who commissioned this work on the occasion of its participation in theWMC in Kerkrade (the Netherlands) in 2013.

The 2020 Ukulele syllabus extends Rockschool's offering to a full suite of grades. The syllabus has been designed in conjunction with their new Ukulele Method books, giving students a comprehensive pathway from absolute beginner stages through to entry into the graded system, and subsequently following a progressive pathway through to grade 8. The syllabus features six tracks for each grade that have been meticulously benchmarked to support students as they learn the instrument. At each grade, two of the pieces offer the students an opportunity to perform without full band backing, exploring the sound and resonance of their instrument. These include duet parts from Debut toGrade 3, which give further opportunities for teaching and group learning. The remaining tracks are ‘session style’ backing tracks, performed with full backing band and including vocal accompaniment which is also shown in the notation as a melody line and lyric over the main ukulele part. This evocative fanfare is part of the exciting Measures of Success Performance Series and correlates with the very beginning of Book 1, Opus 3. Using limited ranges and no eighth notes in the winds, this is an ideal piece for first-year students. From the powerful opening statement to the inviting harmonic progressions that follow, you will be shocked that something this compelling can be so accessible to the youngest of students!

In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the ‘Corps of Discovery’ from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touchof the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.
