Schubert's Ständchen (Serenade) on Rellstab's poem “Leise flehen meine Lieder” (Gently My Songs Entreat) not only numbers among the most well-known art songs, but is still a real hit today in Liszt's arrangement for piano solo. Initially published in 1838 in a version without ossias, the arrangement began its triumph on the piano by 1840 at the latest – probably not least thanks to Liszt's obliging addition of easier variants – as numerous editions published throughout Europe during the composer's lifetime testify. Liszt himself liked to play the Ständchen as an encore and even wrote small cadenzas for it, which are of course taken into account in the new Henle Urtext edition. English and French translations of the German poem as well as the placement of the song text above the music round off the edition, for which Evgeny Kissin provided the fingerings.

Once Editio Musica Budapest had published critical editions of the complete piano solo works of Franz Liszt, they began work on a Supplement Series with the goal of publishing earlier and alternative editions of those works. Now in Volume 14, the editors present two alternate versions of the seminal Weihnachtsbaum: the first version (from autograph) and an early published version. Included also are alternate versions of his Annees de pelerinage, Troisieme annee and the Schlummerlied im Grabe, Die Trauergondel, and others. As always, both versions include background information on all pieces and facsimile copies. The hardbound edition includes all critical notes and a handsome blue hardcover, matching the rest of the series.

Volume 15 of the Supplement Series presents an earlier version of the Concerto in a solo piano edition, along with earlier and alternate versions of Liszt original pieces and transcriptions. The paper and cloth editions have identical contents, but the cloth edition contains critical notes and commentary. This volume completes the initial phase of The New Liszt Edition. Series I: Works for Solo Piano (18 volumes), Series II: Free Arrangements and Transcriptions (24 volumes), and the Supplement to Series I and II (15 volumes) were presented over a span of almost fifty years. Every volume is available in both a paperback performing edition and a hardcover critical edition. See an overview of the New Liszt Edition at EMB's website.
