When AntonÃn Dvorák started composing his String Quartet No. 10 in late 1878, none of his quartets had yet been performed. However this new work, deliberately cast in the “Slavonic†style, quickly achieved international renown and has remained among one of the most popular string quartets by Dvorák.The authoritative Dvorák scholar Hartmut Schick has consulted all accessible sources, most notably the printed score published by Simrock and the autograph. Now, after many decades, a definitive Urtext edition of this major work can be presented. In comparison to the old Supraphon edition of 1955, the new publication includes a detailed Critical Commentary (Eng) as well as edited early versions of the middle movements in the appendix. A detailed Foreword (Ger/Cz/Eng) by the editor is also contained.

The title's Third Word of Creation refers to verses from Rilke's Book of Hours which indicate the fear of what other delicate experiments God might come up with after 'light' and 'man'. Schultz contradicts the text by combining it with the monolithic beginning of the First Book of Moses in the Old Testament, which is imbued with the rightness of God's actions, as well as with lines by the Persian poet Rumi in the translation by Friedrich Ruckert. The latter indicate the comforting certainty of rebirth as ahigher being up to the unfathomable spirit of God. The composer accomplishes the feat of weaving all three levels into a complex, ethereal structure in which the words nevertheless always remain clearly understandable.

In this GRAMMY-winning song, What Was I Made For?, from the Barbie movie, Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell captured a major theme from the movie---self-awareness. With beautiful melodies and soft rhythms, the violins, violas, and cellos cover the lovely melody with lush accompaniments in all sections. Arranger Bob Phillips set this hit perfectly for intermediate string orchestra while remaining very close to the original. An optional repeat allows for flexibility in the length of the piece.

Even though the Frankfurt composer Kurt Hessenberg (1908-1994) made a lasting impression, especially by his sacred choral music - his motet 'O Herr, mache mich zum Werkzeug deines Friedens' forms part of the repertoire of every good choir - his career as a composer began with piano, chamber and orchestral music. All his life Hessenberg remained faithful to these genres. Between 1958 and 1963 he wrote five miniatures which he put together into Opus 71 and in which he let the five instruments of a wind quintet have their 'say' separately and with piano accompaniment: flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon.Created in 1958, 'Capriccio' Op. 71 No. 2 is dedicated to the oboe. It is an enjoyable and rewarding piece in a neoclassical style characterized by an extended tonality. This 'Capriccio' gives the oboist the possibility to play in an effective virtuoso, yet cantabile way and, in addition, uses piano accompaniment in a rewarding manner - a welcome addition to the oboe repertoire.

The music world has long been familiar with Mendelssohn's celebrated, standard-setting Piano Trio in D minor op. 49. No one, however, knew how many stages this masterpiece went through before it was finally published in 1840. According to preliminary sketches that can no longer be reconstructed, the early version of the of the work in its traditional piano-trio scoring was written in spring 1839. It was given its first performance at the Mendelssohn home in Berlin and remained unpublished. The following year, Mendelssohn brought out a version of the work with flute instead of violin at the request of an English publisher. He had already strongly reworked the original version for the publication. Another revision was made of the flute version, which not only took into account the different technical possibilities of a wind instrument, but also affected the compositional substance of the work. Thus Mendelssohn very nearly did write his D minor Piano Trio three times!

The Shoa never was a theme in the works of Ursula Mamlok - with the exception of Ruckblick for saxophone and piano which she wrote in 2002 on commission of the Temple University in memory of Kristallnacht. The contrast between slow and fast movements is much moreelaborate than in her other works from that period, with the fast movements appearing somewhat driven while the piano part for a fewmoments adopts an otherwise unknown severity. Near the end of the third movement, cantabile and fleeting gestures are suddenly pushed toward each other. The first fast movement arises from the destruction of attempted cantability. The Elegy (2nd movement) dies away with a four-fold reminder of its initial motif, the last attempt remaining fragmentary. The fourth movement Lament concludes with a figure that returns to its beginning.

Thanks to Alois Schmitts supplements, the work became performable in its entirety for the first time in 1901. Basing himself on Mozarts sketches, Schmitt completed the instrumentation, which at times had not been definitely notated, constructed the Agnus Dei from the Kyrie of the Mass and compiled the missing parts of the Credo by borrowing from other works by Mozart.

Bach's Cantata BWV 69a of 1723, which has remained largely unknown to the present day, is now available for the first time in a practical edition with this Carus publication. It has been unjustly neglected as it was overshadowed by the Cantata BWV 69 of the same name, a piece which Bach reworked to celebrate the inauguration of Leipzig Town Council in 1748. On that occasion Bach re-used the parts from 1723 for simplicity, and adapted them for the new use by means of cuts, alterations, and additions - something which certainly did not mean that he rejected the 1723 version. This version can readily be recovered from the parts of 1723, if we explore beyond the alterations of 1748. With its rich wind instruments and great opening chorus, the 1723 cantata is in no way inferior to the later festive music in terms of musical splendor. The text takes the Gospel reading about the healing of the deaf and dumb man as a reason for praise and thanks for God's good deeds. In contrast to the later version, in which God is thanked for the wisdom of the Leipzig authorities, the original version of 1723 is free of such contemporary references, and is suitable for use in worship and concerts in many different ways. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3106900.

Italian composer, Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) is well-known for his Keyboard compositions. His 555 Keyboard Sonatas remain ever popular to this day, and it is for this reason that this eleventh and final volume is indispensableto performers of the genre. Originally composed for the Harpsichord, Organ or early Pianoforte, the Sonatas display the riveting use of discords and unconventional modulations to remote keys. It is also thought that much ofScarlatti's Keyboard music contains influences of Iberian music, considering that he spent much of his working life in the service of the Spanish and Portuguese royal families. The eleventh volume, comprising Sonatas 507-55,includes the popular and recognisable Sonata in E major (K. 531). Bearing in mind that Domenico Scarlatti was a highly competent and popular Keyboard player in his day, so much so that he was employed in the service of two royalfamilies, his Sonatas are composed with much experience, understanding and expertise, creating an essential addition to the repertoire of all Keyboard players of the Baroque genre.

In 1726 Johann Sebastian Bach performed a series of cantatas by his Meiningen cousin Johann Ludwig, then continued this series with his own works, but remained faithful to the textual models used his cousin: a Meiningen cycle of texts by an unknown author from the early 18th century. All these texts share the characteristic of including two quotations from the bible: one from the Old Testament at the beginning, and another from the New Testament in the middle. These cantatas include Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben BWV 102. The opening chorus in several sections is one of Bach's masterpieces of choral composition. The cantata is also one of those works on which Bach's later reputation was based: performances are documented from 1776 in Hamburg and in Berlin by Zelter's Sing-Akademie from 1813 onwards. In 1830 it was one of the very first cantatas by Bach to appear in print. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3110200.

The choral score of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's oratorioElijahis based on the scholarly-critical edition edited by Mendelssohn specialist Douglass Seaton. In its 1847 version, this musical setting of the story of the Biblical prophet from the 1st Book of Kings has remained popular to the present day. The choral score is fully compatible with the existing performance material. It does not however contain the appendices found in the full score and vocal score (with numbers from the first version).
