“In early 2006 I was commissioned to write a piece to be premiered in a church. Before beginning work on it, I tested the acoustics there, according to which the compositional concept developed. Somewhat later I began to compose the piece 'with the church', so to speak. During the process of composition, however, the music gradually distanced itself from the original spatial conditions and developed into a piece whose characteristics were transformed into a church-acoustical structure. 'I see your music when I hear it', a listener once said to me. Does one really see the music? Can fragrances be heard? Or can one smell colours? This 5-part composition is music in which the tones move in space on different levels, even when they are sometimes very quiet and slow; they are clear and transparent even when they are apparently dense, complicated and energetic.†(Xiaoyong Chen).

In his brief career George Butterworth (1885-1916) composed only a small quantity of orchestral works, but what he wrote has never subsequently been absent from the repertoire. The two English Idylls, the Rhapsody 'A Shropshire Lad' and the idyll The Banks of Green Willow are, with the music of his friend Ralph Vaughan Williams and of Gustav Holst, among the most exquisite statements of the English folk-song idiom. This complete and authoritative collection includes an earlier version of The Banks of Green Willow, and a fragment of an Orchestral Fantasia. Work in progress in 1914 when Butterworth enlisted to serve in the Great War, it suggests the composer setting out in a bolder direction, perhaps inspired by the example of Vaughan Williams's A London Symphony. Orchestral parts are available for rental.

This Christmas cantata was conceived with two main ideas: to provide a new cantata that was accessible to most choirs, and to provide a major work that would have wide appeal to choirs and congregations. Tidings of Great Joy uses brief melodic quotes from familiar carols interwoven with new material (text and music) to tell the story of Christmas in a fresh way. There is considerable variety in the instrumentation and vocal work, providing for several soloists, women's chorus, men's chorus and an octet. Even though it is quite acceptable to perform this work with organ only, the use of instruments adds greatly to the overall effect and success of the piece. Texts by: Mary Jackson Cathey and Rae E. Hope helps each of us face life's challenges with courage and optimism. Gift of Hope by Scott Watson captures musically both of these aspects of hope. Opening dramatically, the piece soon settles into an upbeat, joyful main theme. Slower contrasting material follows, building from a tender, transparently scored opening to a climax full of resolve. The optimistic main theme returns, leading to a dramatic, heroic conclusion. (5:45).

Aulis Sallinen (b. 1935) is one of the most famous Finnish contemporary composers. In his early instrumental works, Sallinen was still seeking to establish a style of his own. He had studied at the Sibelius Academy in the late 1950s, first with Aarre Merikanto - a composer representing a national brand of Neoclassicism - and then with Joonas Kokkonen, at that time just transitioning from Neoclassicism to dodecaphony. Twelve-tone music had won fairly widespread acceptance in contemporary Finn-ish music, and Sallinen was influenced, too. The Variations are Sallinen's first real work for the cello - an instrument that would later be one of his favourites, its warm, deep voice corres-ponding to his music's often dark undercurrent. The Variations for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 5 were composed in 1961-1962 and premiered in October 1962. The basic motif consists of a set of three descending intervals stated by the cello at the beginning: D-D flat-F, C-B-G and B flat-A-F sharp. Their use as basic material is a ref-lection of the composer's dodecaphony-oriented period, and variation of this material provides the framework for the piece. Variations for Cello and Orchestra are now published for the first time. Available are a reduction for cello and piano, study score and complete performance material with orchestra.

The chiaroscuro-technique developed by painters of the Italian renaissance served to intensify contrasts and effects of optical depth. In Klar/Obskur, I tried to transfer the general idea of this technique on the rather unusual instrumentation of two double-reed woodwinds and piano. On the one hand, a clear, well articulated playing is characteristic for these instruments, on the other hand, they have an often underestimated potential of 'twilight': air-sounds and fragile, shady colours have a especially attractive when being produced by double-reed instruments (which are often, and superficially regarded as being less capable of differentiated sounds than flute or clarinet). The piano, too, has a broad bandwidth of possibilities between percussive and delicate playing to complement the woodwinds which, in return, can absorb and continue the fading piano sounds. The beginning introduces the two contrasting elements that form the basic material for the piece: a clear, sharp chord, followed by fragile, dim sounds. The changes between these elements as well as their combination and amalgamation produce an enormous spectrum of colours and gesture. After this 'motto-like' opening follow four quite clearly separated short sections, each of them being characterised by a well-defined texture: a partly almost imperceptible air-sound passage, a short sequence of microintervallic notes, a burst of virtuosity and a recourse to the fragile sounds of the beginning. The second, longer main part consists of three sections merging subtly into each other: a short unisono-passage, marked elastic [federnd], is being dissolved into its basic elements; from these remainders, a confrontation of low, 'arcane' bassoon and piano sounds and a strongly ornamented melodic line of the oboe emerges, leading to a short but powerful climax. The piece is concluded by an extended, relaxed epilogue, containing a short piano solo and a duet of oboe and bassoon and, finally, a quotation of the 'elastic' character of the middle section.Benjamin Schweitzer.

?Richard Siegel won prizes for the Harpsichord and Chamber Music at the Paris Conservatoire before going on the win first prize in the 1977 International Harpsichord Competition. He has since recorded over 30 CDs and his passion for the instrument has been apparent further in his production of Learn to Play the Harpsichord. As stated in the preface, the study of the Harpsichord has long been reserved, frequently dismissed as an 'old-fashioned' instrument. However, a recent rise in the popularity of early music has rekindled interest in it. In Learn to Play the Harpsichord Volume 2 being the second of two helpful volumes to aid student's learning and progression, Siegel enables Harpsichord beginners to learn through repertoire pieces themselves, drawn from the Keyboard masters of the Baroque period. The pupil will be guided towards an understanding of technique and style suited to the Harpsichord. Furthermore, Learn to Play the Harpsichord enables adults who learnt the instrument as a child to return to the instrument and have the instant feeling of ??music making??. andrdquo.

Vier Seiten for violoncello is an attempt to present an event that in reality takes about two seconds in extreme slow motion, thus making even the micromovements visible or audible beyond the straight line of motion. When I composed the piece, the fatal accident of Ayrton Senna came to my mind again and again - an accident which was shown on TV in slow motion again and again until it became unbearable. The fast motion of the car immediately before the crash into a concrete wall, a motion which was no longer purposeful but out of control and which had the car pulled to and fro and from side to side, was followed by that crash. In this extreme slow motion, it is no longer shown as a crash but as the fast telescoping of carbon fibre, metal and human body parts. After this crash, as a postlude so to speak, everything suddenly slowed down, tyres and automotive particles floating in the air, the torso of the vehicle swinging until the motion stopped. It was not until this moment that I realized that the whole presentation of the incident had been accompanied by paralyzing silence.- Thomas LarcherVier Seiten is a response to Ayrton Senna's fatal car accident, portrayed in slow motion, as it was repeatedly shown on television at the time. In this poignant work, a violent fast section represents the crash, followed by a long epilogue, reflecting the apparent stillness of the immediate aftermath.

The sisters Ruth, Anita and June Pointer from West Oakland in California learned how to sing in the sixties in church where their father was a minister. At the beginning of the 1970s they entered the music business, where they proved to have a mastery of many styles - including rhythm and blues, jazz, and country. However, the Pointer Sisters acquired international fame at the beginning of the eighties with their soul-like pop music. A great hit was the up-tempo number Iâ??m So Excited, which is still a success on every dance floor. This sparkling arrangement by Peter Kleine Schaars certainly provides the excitement that is suggested in the title.Die Pastorentöchter Ruth, Anita und June Pointer aus Kalifornien lernten in den 60er-Jahren in der Kirche ihres Vaters das Singen. This easy tune features all sections with clever rhythmic variations. Readily accessible and as easy to put together as any Bob Phillips fiddle tune arrangement, the traditional melody appears in all sections and may be taught aurally. Though its origin is unknown, Spotted Pony appears to have roots in the Ozarks in Missouri, Arkansas, or Texas. Fiddlers in the early 20th century claim to have learned it from their grandparents' generation, so it most likely has been played since the late 19th century or earlier. String Quartet No.4 was written for the Camilli Quartet who gave the first performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, April 1995. It is dedicated to the memory of Nyman's composition teacher, Alan Bush. This quartet is a narrative made up of a chain of twelve complete but often cross-related movements, each quite simple in design. For instance, the Scottish melody first heard in the second half of I is hinted at in the 2nd violin/viola in the second fast section of II and is directly quoted again during III and XII. The theme of the fast section of IV is taken up again in VIII; IX reverts to the mood of the opening of I, while the rising scale/syncopated themes of II, IX and the bass of X and XII are related. X also reintroduces the slow harmonics theme from VII. XII is (apparently) cast in the form of a baroque French rondeau. The main theme of VI was plucked out of the Quartet and used in my score for Christopher Hampton's film Carrington. Duration 40 minutes. A set of parts is available for sale.

Let's gather together, let's celebrate, let's sing! The action-packed main theme of this glorious original work organizes rhythmic accents into 332 subdivisions and seamlessly pivots from key to key, before opening up to full choral harmony. A reverent Gaudeamus Hodie passage assembles lyrical lines section by section in smooth choral counterpoint, leading to a triumphant fanfare that bookends this jubilant song of exaltation. Right from the outset until the very end, the speed, energy and “drive†of the tuneful music is palpable. It’s abundantly clear why the title “Seatbelts Fastened!†was chosen: just like an airplane, this music takes off and neither tempo nor intensity are lost throughout the flight. Descending and ascending scales characterise the most important thematic material and the music explores a variety of different registers through Van der Roost utilising a great deal of different tonalities and metres. Please keep your seatbelts fastened and enjoy the flight!

With their wide range of differing moods these pieces concentrate less on the typical rhythm of the Tango but convey something of the demonic forces inherent in this dance. Unusual playing techniques like plucked strings, clusters from wrist to elbow and the use of the voice further emphasize the composer's 'sinister' intentions. Piano solo.
